Bluesky Reaches 20 Million Users as Social Media Landscape Shifts

Bluesky Social, the decentralized social media platform founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, has hit a new milestone, surpassing 20 million registered users. The platform, which initially launched in beta in 2022, has steadily grown in popularity, attracting users seeking an alternative to some of the more established social media giants.

Bluesky distinguishes itself with a unique approach, built on an open framework known as the AT Protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol). This framework emphasizes decentralization, interoperability, and user control over their data, giving users the flexibility to move their content between different platforms that support the protocol. It’s a notable contrast to closed ecosystems where companies typically have full control over user data and algorithms.

The sudden spike in Bluesky’s user base likely corresponds with recent shakeups at X (formerly Twitter), particularly under Elon Musk’s leadership. Since Musk’s acquisition, X has undergone numerous changes, from the introduction of paid verification to rate limits on the number of posts users can see. Some users who preferred Twitter’s earlier, freer structure appear to have migrated to challengers like Bluesky, which positions itself as a more community-driven, ad-free alternative.

Bluesky’s standout feature, however, is its commitment to decentralization, which aligns with Dorsey’s long-standing interest in open social networks. This decentralized architecture allows users to register on different “servers” (or instances) that can communicate with each other. A key benefit is having more control over data privacy and moderation policies depending on the server chosen. While this can seem a little technical at first for casual users, it provides a level of customization and control rare in today’s social media options.

As Bluesky continues to grow, it is worth keeping an eye on whether it can maintain the momentum and attract more users who are seeking an alternative to the algorithms and ad-driven content that dominate other platforms. Whether the 20 million users mark is just the beginning or a high-water mark remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Bluesky is carving out its own space in an increasingly fragmented social media landscape.
