Samsung Galaxy Nexus [Review]

0

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus (SGN) is the best smartphone on the market today – bar none.

After living with this phone for almost a month now, it has not only met my expectations but have exceeded them in almost every way.  I will spare all of the tech specs as the SGN has been in the public eye for quite some time now, and I will largely review the phone on its day-to-day merits for real world use.

My must have apps are: Google Voice, K-9 for work email, AndChat for always-on IRC connectivity, Plume for Tweeting, Catch Notes,  Facebook, and all other Google services.

The first thing you will notice about the SGN is that it looks like a smaller brother to its Honeycomb forerunners, i.e. no physical buttons.  No, Android 4.0 has eschewed the buttons for a cleaner look and a better way for landscape to portrait screen orientation that moves the buttons with the phone.

There is a downside however, for those who depended on the ‘magnifying glass’ button for search it has been replaced by a Google search box on the main screen.

The second thing?  The Screen is HD Super AMOLED.  This.  Thing.  Is.  For.  Real.  I won’t bore you with the specs but here they are if you need confirmation.  Just before getting the SGN, I briefly flirted with an iPhone 4 as a backup phone and the SGN makes the Retina Display look second rate at best.

The viewing angles of this device are marvelous as is the resolution: a proper 1280×720 pixels.  Movies look gorgeous, especially those from the PIXAR family and applications look vibrant and almost have a 3D like quality to them.

As with most of the Samsung Galaxy phones, the lock screen will be familiar and the volume buttons, but there is some strange placement afoot.  Namely the charging port and 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom of the phone.

I used to have the Samsung Fascinate and they were on top of that device.  The top is a much better place to have any cables/wires coming from as they will not get in the way of putting the phone in normal portrait mode, like say, in a windshield holder.

The power button is on the upper left side all by its lonesome.  The actual heft of the device is one that is much lighter than it looks but that’s to blame/credit on the plastic body.

While I do prefer the design and the materials of the iPhone 4, I was always very deliberate when using it because I was afraid of dropping it.

I do not like having cases on my phones so while the SGN does not feel like it will shatter from a three foot fall, I still handle it very gingerly.  But even with the larger size the phone feels very thin and light and not as large as my old Motorola Droid X or my very old HTC HD2.

Some other niggles with quality and build is the back battery door.  It is very thin and flimsy and I have already bent one of the tabs on the bottom of that keeps it locked.  So be very careful while exchanging batteries.  Which brings me to my next point.  You will be changing out the battery if you are a normal to heavy user.  Regularly.  When I got my phone, I immediately bought the battery charger that came with an extra battery.  Then I bought two more batteries from a Twitter friend of mine who bought the extended batteries for his and didn’t need the standard ones anymore.  I was thinking of the extended batts but didn’t want the extra thickness.  So I now have four batteries total that I keep in a very thin case that can fit into any jacket and can go for about two days without any external charging.  The Verizon 4G is spotty at best and I have only used it a few times, but mainly just to check the speed.  But boy, is it FAST!  I have seen downloads as fast as 35mbps and it can make your SGN double as a hand warmer when activated.  I do have PDAnet installed so I occasionally use it for wired tethering, and in this case is very helpful since phone can be charged at the same time.

While trying to get as much battery life as possible, I sometimes turned off the auto-sync, but what’s the upside to a smartphone that is not constantly getting data and updates?  So now I turn it off only when I am at my computer to not duplicate email alerts, etc.

Okay, now for the software.  Android 4.0 AKA Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is everything I wanted in a smartphone.  While I have been recommending Android to many people, I still tell some to get an iPhone if they just “want it to work”.  And ICS is the first version of the software that truly feels like production software and not a Beta that is meant to be forgiven from the onset.  Just like a proper desktop OS, the addition of folders has saved screen real estate and helps organize applications for easy look up.  And now that my Motorola XOOM was blessed with ICS, I have a double helping of goodness.

The browser is finally like a true mobile version of Chrome.  The menu button gives context for bookmarks and sharing options and even a new feature “Request desktop site” as well as the way to access the Settings.  The address bar button gives you options for “add a tab” and bookmarks.  You can also view other browser sessions as thumbnails with the same button.   Also, you can no longer just long press the screen to add widgets.  These are now found along with all of the other applications just a swipe away.  Long presses now just give you a way to change wallpapers.

The notifications are now easier to delete as they can now be swiped away from the window shade, while the screen is locked.  This makes it much easier to interact with the phone when just looking at the screen for the notification LED to blink.

As far as I can tell, the phone feature is very good.  I can hear other callers loud and clear and have had no complaints from others, however the speakerphone sounds muffled and a bit thin.  The new phone dialpad UI is very Tron-like, courtesy of Android’s new Roboto fonts.

The camera is good and very fast but not as good as the Samsung Galaxy II’s but since I still carry a Canon ELPH 300HS, this is not an issue with me.  And I am never thrilled to see a soft shutter button.  But it can be used from the lock screen now: left for Camera, right to Unlock.  I don’t use my SGN for viewing movies regularly (just to show others how good the screen is) and I don’t use it for MP3 listening it is a competent media player but not a primary use for me.

This last feature that I have used a lot for this article is the ability to easily take screenshots.  Just hold the power button and volume down rocker simultaneously and voila!  The screenshot saves into its own Screenshot folder in your gallery and it’s very easy to show others what is going right and wrong with your phone as well as post pictures like I have done.  No more rooting your phone and sticking your tongue out and holding your arm out to get a decent screenshot.

I can honestly say that after using and owning many Android phones, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the best phone out there right now.  And while a few may come along this year to compete against it, the SGN will still be at the top of the list for me.

LG Intros Optimus Pad LTE

0

LG today introduced their first Android-powered tablet capable of support LTE networks in the form of the –wait for it– Optimus Pad LTE.  Running Android 3.2 Honeycomb and featuring a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, the Optimus Pad LTE also boasts an 8.9-inch 1280 x 720 True HD IPS display, an 8-megapixel camera (HD video) and HDMI and DLNA connectivity. Internal storage is pegged at 32GB with SD card support for 32GB of additional memory.

As of right now we have no indication as to what the Optimus Pad LTE will cost nor when it will be released.  For some strange reason LG decided to put this announcement out between CES and MWC.  Perhaps we’ll learn more at next month’s big event in Barcelona.

LG TO INTRODUCE ITS FIRST LTE TABLET

Expanding LTE Leadership into Tablets toMeet the Needs of Consumers’ Faster Lifestyles

SEOUL, Jan. 18, 2012 – LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its first LTE-capable tablet, the Optimus Pad LTE. Initially launching in Korea, LG has equipped the tablet with both LTE technology and True HD IPS display, the two features that have helped LG differentiate its latest smartphone, Optimus LTE, from the competition.

“With tablets generating five times more traffic than the average smartphone, it’s not a huge jump to assume that tablet users need and want faster connectivity,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “The combination of LG’s LTE technology with the tablet form factor is a clear advantage for consumers who use a tablet as their primary consumption device when on the move.”

Boasting the best-in-class in the tablets, LG Optimus Pad LTE provides the ultimate user environment to enjoy HD multimedia with a 1280 x 720 True HD IPS display and 8 megapixel camera for shooting high definition video. The Optimus Pad LTE is also the world’s first tablet to support an SD memory card expandable to 32GB, recognizing the importance multimedia would play for owners of this device.

Along with these features, the Optimus Pad LTE offers easy-to-use controls and functions such as the Smart Movie Editor for editing pictures and videos more easily. Moreover, Web Duet allows for e-mailing, messaging and SNS sharing with search functions, and On-Screen Phone (OSP) ensures compatibility with LG smartphones.

LG Optimus Pad LTE is extremely portable and aesthetically pleasing, weighing in at a svelte 479g and only 9.34mm thin. Equipped with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor running Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS, LG’s newest tablet guarantees superior performance. Huawei is a brand which is rapidly making a highly ranked place in the mobile market. They started from China as a small brand, they are now famous all over the world. Now Huawei is back with the announcement of Huawei MediaPad, which is the world’s first tablet to feature Android 4.0; also the announcement of Huawei MediaPad Color series but this series will be Honeycomb powered, just like the original model.

Sprint’s unlimited data plans also benefit NBA fans. As the Official Wireless Service Partner of the NBA, Sprint exclusively offers Sprint NBA Mobile on Android phones, including the upcoming 4G LTE LG Viper. This new custom app provides in-game and post-game video highlights, news, scores, stats and live home and away radio broadcasts to NBA fans.

Users can even video chat with up to 10 friends with Google+ Hangouts for mobile. Galaxy Nexus will also be Sprint’s second smartphone enabled with NFC supporting Google Wallet, enabling the phone to be used like a wallet to make safe, secure purchases at hundreds of thousands of participating retailers.

Additional details will be provided closer to availability.

Powered by Android 2.3, Gingerbread, LG Viper 4G LTE is equipped with a 1.2GHz dual core processor and two cameras – a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a VGA front-facing camera that makes face-to-face video calls a fun and easy experience. Verizon and Motorola launch Droid Razr Maxx, Droid Razr to get a purple paint job

0

Verizon and Motorola released the Droid Razr just a few months ago, praising it as the thinnest smartphone in the world (until today, that is). They’ve just announced a successor in some respects to the Razr, and they’re dubbing it the Razr Maxx. If you remember, the Maxx popped up in a Big Red inventory screenshot last month, so this isn’t exactly a shocker. Nevertheless, it looks as if Verizon and Motorola are aiming for a longer-lasting device with the Razr Maxx

The Maxx is boasting 21 hours of continuous use on one charge, and it comes in at just 1.29mm thicker than its slim brother. The specs are identical to the Droid Razr, save for the battery. The Maxx will come in a 32GB model, at $299 with a qualifying 2-year contract. There’s no word on exactly when the Maxx will be available in stores, but we suspect it’ll be sometime soon. Our own Scott Webster will be going hands-on with the Droid Razr Maxx tomorrow, so stay tune to AndroidGuys for continuing coverage on this latest device!

But wait, there’s more! Verizon also announced that they’re releasing the Droid Razr in purple, which means that users can now get the device in black, white, or purple. A 16GB purple Razr will run you $199.99 with a qualifying 2-year contract.

As if that wasn’t enough, Verizon has also made a promise that’s sure to make Razr, Razr Maxx, and Droid XyBoard users very happy campers. All of these devices will see an ICS upgrade in the near future, although no time frame was given. But  at least Big Red is trying to keep their devices up-to-date. More on this as it develops.

So with all of that being said, what are you most excited about, the Droid Razr Maxx, a purple Droid Razr, or ICS? Sound off in the comments below! The full press release can also be found below.

[spoiler show=”Press Release” hide=”Press Release”]LAS VEGAS (BUSINESS WIRE), January 09, 2012 – Sprint (NYSE:S) today announced the initial group of devices that will operate on its 4G LTE network – Galaxy Nexus™, boasting a pure Google™ experience, LG Viper™ 4G LTE with eco-friendly features and Sierra Wireless™ Tri-Network Hotspot, 3G, 4G and 4G LTE mobile hotspot. Full product specifications, pricing and availability will be shared closer to each device’s launch date.

The debut of these devices is a key element of Network Vision, Sprint’s plan to consolidate multiple network technologies into one seamless solution. With Network Vision, Sprint customers can expect to enjoy ultra-fast data speeds, improved 3G voice and data quality, and stronger in-building signal penetration providing a more valuable wireless experience and enhancing the value of current unlimited plans.

“The first three products that will run on the Sprint 4G LTE network exemplify the cutting-edge technology our customers can expect from Sprint as we progress with our 4G LTE rollout,” said Steve Elfman, president of Network, Wholesale and Product Development for Sprint. “Galaxy Nexus packs industry-leading features and the best of Google into a beautiful design while LG Viper 4G LTE continues Sprint’s commitment to green devices that don’t sacrifice speed or technology. These products combine with our unlimited data pricing plans to give Sprint customers a powerful wireless experience.”

On Jan. 5, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse announced that customers in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are expected to be among the first to benefit from 4G LTE and improved 3G coverage in the first half of 2012. Additional areas that will receive 3G enhancements and 4G LTE expansion in 2012 will be announced later in the year.

Approximately 15 4G LTE devices are currently on track to be launched in 2012 including handsets, tablets and data cards. Additionally, 4G devices, including HTC EVO™ Design 4G, Samsung Epic™ 4G Touch and Nexus S™ 4G, will continue to be sold in 2012.

The new 4G LTE smartphones will benefit from Sprint Everything plans including the Everything Data Plan with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM offering unlimited data, texting and calling to and from any mobile phone in America while on the Sprint Network. With Sprint’s unlimited data plans, customers don’t have to worry about throttling or surprises on their monthly bill from data overage charges like they might with tiered data plans from other carriers.

Robust Features at 4G LTE Speeds

Pairing the beauty of Samsung hardware with a pure Google experience, Galaxy Nexus on Sprint is built on Android™ 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. Ice Cream Sandwich brings an entirely new look and feel to Android. It has a redesigned user interface with improved multi-tasking, notifications, Wi-Fi hotspot, NFC support and a full web browsing experience. Galaxy Nexus features software navigation buttons, a first for Android smartphones. The lock screen, home screen, phone app and everything in between has been rethought and redesigned to make Android simple, beautiful and useful.

Ice Cream Sandwich introduces innovations such as Face Unlock, which uses facial recognition to unlock your phone. Using NFC (Near Field Communications) technology, Android Beam allows users to quickly share web pages, apps and YouTube™ videos with friends by simply tapping phones together.

Green without Compromising Speed

LG Viper 4G LTE brings customers the benefit of eco-friendly features without missing out on speed or the latest technology. Initial eco-friendly features include a charger with a no-load consumption rating of .03W, which exceeds the EC Code of Conduct on energy efficiency and the casing is made of 35 percent recycled plastics.

It offers a 4-inch WVGA NOVA display, hotspot capability and a microSD™ slot supporting up to 32GB. It is also compatible with DLNA-capable devices.

As a Sprint ID smartphone, LG Viper 4G LTE allows users to cut through the clutter of more than 400,000 apps in Android Market™ by selecting from a variety of mobile ID packs featuring apps, ringers, wallpapers, widgets and more. Currently available Sprint ID packs include Green, Fashion and Beauty, E!™, MTV™ Music, CMT and NASCAR Sprint Cup. In addition, LG Viper 4G LTE is NFC-enabled and capable of providing Google Wallet.

Hotspot Combines 4G LTE, 4G WiMAX and 3G
