Google Photos Is Getting an AI Wardrobe Feature This Summer

Getting dressed has always involved a certain amount of mental archaeology. The jacket is in there somewhere, you’re pretty sure. Google Photos is about to help you find it.

Google is rolling out a new Wardrobe feature later this summer that uses AI to turn your existing photo library into a digital closet. The app scans photos you’ve already taken, identifies the clothing and accessories you’re wearing in them, and builds a dedicated wardrobe collection from the results. No manual tagging, no setup required.

Your Clothes, Cataloged by AI

The Wardrobe feature creates a browsable view of what you actually own, drawn from photos already sitting in your Google Photos library. You can filter by category including tops, bottoms, jewelry, and outerwear, to narrow things down to a specific type of item, or scroll through everything at once to remind yourself what’s been hiding in the back of your closet. Most people own more than they remember, and their phone’s camera has quietly documented most of it.

From there, the feature steps into outfit planning. Mix and match pieces to build full looks, then save them to moodboards you can organize by occasion including work outfits, summer weddings, or a packing list for an upcoming trip. Outfits can also be shared directly with friends, cutting down on the inevitable back-and-forth when you need a second opinion before committing to a look.

The virtual try-on feature covers the last step. Select the clothing items you want to combine, tap “Try it on,” and Google Photos generates a preview showing how the outfit looks on you before you’ve pulled anything out of your closet.

Rolling Out This Summer, Android First

The Wardrobe feature will start rolling out in Google Photos later this summer, with Android users getting access first. iOS support is planned to follow.
