Review: Samsung Fascinate

By now you’ve probably seen the reviews of the other Samsung Galaxy S phones — the Epic 4G, Captivate, or Vibrant– or at least gotten an idea of what Samsung’s trying to do with Android 2010.   Up until this now, the non-Droid Android offerings on Big Red’s network have been a little disappointing and quite lacking.  The Fascinate is arguably the first handset that gives something like the Droid X or the Incredible a proper run for its money. This review (which should have been done a while ago I might add) is my honest opinion of a Bing-ified handset I wanted to hate, but actually end up loving.

Overall, the Fascinate represents Samsung’s first serious smartphone in years and their apparent desire to use Android to dominate the U.S. market.  Did Samsung succeed with this handset? Did they nail it? Will this be the first non-Droid Android handset which is actually worth buying on Verizon?  Hit the jump to find out!

T-Mobile Announces the LG Optimus T

T-Mobile has announced the LG Optimus T.  The Optimus T will be aimed at first-time smartphone buyers. It will come with Android 2.2 and deep integration with Google services including Voice actions The handset will have a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with video capture, a microSD card slot and a 2GB card.  Oh and it will also have a 3.2-inch, 320×480 capacitive touchscreen. All this sounds pretty decent for an entry-level device.  No word yet on wifi calling.  Hit the jump for the full press release!

U.S. Cellular Launching Samsung Mesmerize October 27

We just received official word from U.S. Cellular that they will be launching their Galaxy S series handset, the Samsung Mesmerize, on October 27th.  Much like the phones offered by the bigger carriers, it features a 4-inch AMOLED touchscreen, a 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, virtual QWERTY keyboard with Swype, and a 5 megapixel camera/camcorder.  And just like the top providers, U.S. Cellular will drop this Android 2.1 phone with a $199 price tag (after $80 mail-in rebate) later this month.  According to our contact, the Mesmerize will see Android 2.2 this year!

Verizon Announces the Motorola Droid Pro [UPDATE]

Verizon has officially announced the Droid Pro.  Before I go any farther, I just want to say that I absolutely love the form factor.  I just hope Motorola got it right this time and we don’t have another Motorola Charm on our hands.  We don’t know much specs-wise apart from Android 2.2 with Blur and global roaming support in more than 220 countries, but hopefully we will find out more soon.  Verizon said this about the Droid Pro:

DROID PRO is a new, powerful, stronger and faster solution designed to meet both business and personal needs. The first Android™-based smartphone optimized for business use, DROID PRO is also a global-ready Android smartphone, allowing customers to enjoy wireless voice service in more than 220 countries and data coverage in more than 200 countries.

Anyone digging this? I hope we find out more this week at CTIA.  I might just pick this up.

AT&T Adds to Android Arsenal with Trio of Motorola Devices – Bravo, Flipside, and Flipout

AT&T has announced three new Android handsets today, each coming from Motorola.  Dubbed the Flipout, Bravo, and Flipside, they are each Android 2.1 phones with the latest release of MOTOBLUR user experience.  And keeping with Motorola’s track record, the phones carry unique form factors not found on other carriers.  In a move that is sure to attract new users, these Android phones are not going to break your piggy bank, ranging from $79.99 to $129.99.  Once these arrive, AT&T will have eight Android devices to for customers to choose from.  Not too shabby!

Quick Reference: The Flipout hides a full five-row QWERTY keyboard underneath the touch screen which reveals itself when the swivel hinge is opened.  Details include 720MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 512MB of ROM, a 3-megapixel camera and a 2GB microSD card.  The Bravo is the beefiest device, running 800MHz with a 3.7-inch full WVGA touch screen, 3-megapixel camera, 512MB RAM, 2GB ROM, and 2 GB microSD card.  The Flipside has a slide-out QWERTY with a 3.1-inch high-resolution HVGA display and a laptop-like trackpad. Hardware specs also include 720MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM and a 2 GB microSD card.

T-Mobile Announces HSPA+ myTouch Handset

Hot on the heels of their new G2 comes another T-Mobile handset with HSPA+ support.  Announced as part of the myTouch series of phones, the latest device runs a 1GHz Snapdraogn processor and features a 3.8-inch touch display.  Other details include 8GB pre-installed memory card, a 5-megapixel camera with HD video recording, and four color choices. As of right now there is no release date or pricing, but we’d be surprised if it was anything other than $199.99 with or without a rebate. Full press release after the jump.

Google Phone Gallery Launches, “with Google” Confusion Continues

Google.com/phone, formerly Google’s storefront for the Nexus One, has been relaunched as the Google Phone Gallery, letting users compare Android phones available in 14 countries from a variety of manufacturer and carriers.

Note that it is not a comprehensive list of Android devices. Rather, it seems to be a selection of phones that Google has decided to highlight.

While the stated intent of the gallery is to be a tool to help consumers compare and make decisions, Google is using the strength of its imprimatur to endorse certain phones and not others. That certain phones are not included in the gallery is a way of expressing disapproval with, for example, Verizon’s Fascinate (which leaves off Google Search for Bing) without being directly punitive.

HTC Debuts “G2 with Sense UI” Desire Z

The Desire Z  officially broke cover this morning, joining the Desire HD as part of HTC’s next big phone plans.  If you’ve been following Android for the last couple of months, you’ll recognize the form factor as that of the upcoming G2 from T-Mobile.  Physical resemblance aside, what’s going on inside the Desire Z?  Is it the same stuff?  Yeah, pretty much.  There’s an 800MHz processor, 1.5GB internal memory, 512MB RAM, and 5.0-megapixel camera.  Powered by Android 2.2, the phone runs the latest version of HTC’s Sense UI.  Look for the Desire Z to begin rolling out next month (October) in major European and Asian markets.  We’ll be back with an official press release once it is made available.

HTC Officially Unveils Desire HD at London Event

In case you might have forgotten, HTC is in London today, talking new phones. One of the new device just unveiled is the Desire HD. Looking very much like a beefed up EVO with Sense UI, this Android 2.2 phone is another stunner from the boys of Taiwan.  We’ll jump right into the cold, hard stats for you guys.  We’re looking at a 1GHz processor, 1.5GB internal storage, 768MB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 4.3-inch SLCD touch screen.  As mentioned at the top, it features the latest version of HTC’s Sense UI on top of Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’.  The Desire HD is capable of 720p HV video recording and offers Dolby® Mobile and SRS surround sound and DLNA connectivity. There’s the requisite support for WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, micro-USB, GPS, and 3.5mm headphone jack. We’ll be back to hit you with the official press release when it’s available!
