Wear OS at Google IO: New Features, Better Performance, and More

Wear OS has experienced significant growth and advancements over the past year. With new watch launches from brands like Pixel, Samsung, and others, the user base grew by 40% in 2023, now reaching users in over 160 countries and regions. This expansion includes new partners like OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi, alongside substantial investments in performance and power optimization.

At Google I/O this year, several key updates for Wear OS were announced, offering exciting new features and improvements. Let’s dive into what’s new and what we might expect from Wear OS. Note that a chunk of this post is aimed more at developers than consumers.

Wear OS 5 Developer Preview

The Developer Preview of Wear OS 5, based on Android 14, is now available. This update continues to enhance battery life and overall performance. For instance, tracking a marathon on Wear OS 5 consumes up to 20% less power compared to Wear OS 4. This means longer workout tracking without worrying about battery life.

New Watch Face Features

Last year, the introduction of the Watch Face Format in Wear OS 4 saw a great response, with 30% of watch faces on Google Play now using this format. Wear OS 5 brings the next iteration of this format, improving the development and customization of watch faces.

Enhanced Tools and Libraries

Jetpack Compose for Wear OS has seen a 200% increase in adoption over the past year, simplifying the development of user interfaces for the watch form factor. Top apps like WhatsApp, Gmail, and Google Calendar are now built using Compose for Wear OS. The latest updates include new features like SwipeToReveal and expandable items, enhancing the user experience on smaller screens.

Tiles and ProtoLayout

Wear OS tiles provide quick access to essential information and actions. The latest version of the Jetpack Tiles library includes preview support in Android Studio, making it easier to develop and optimize tiles for various display sizes.

ProtoLayout, used by Tiles, now includes features like gradient support in ArcLine, improved text autosizing, and better accessibility for clickable elements. These updates ensure your app looks great and functions well on all watch display sizes.

Testing and Fitness Apps

Android Studio now includes a new sensor panel to facilitate testing fitness apps that use Health Services in Wear OS. This feature allows developers to configure device capabilities and simulate events like auto-pause and resume of exercises, ensuring a smooth user experience.

Responsive UIs for Larger Displays

With the growing variety of round screen sizes and resolutions, Wear OS offers more choices for users. New guidelines and library updates help developers create responsive UIs that adapt to different watch display sizes. The ComposeStarter sample for Wear OS on GitHub provides examples of using these tools to optimize layouts for various device sizes and font scales.
