Google has officially announced a major system update that integrates its Gemini AI assistant directly into the operating system of select TCL Google TVs. Users can now utilize natural language voice commands to adjust hardware picture and sound settings, troubleshoot audio-visual anomalies, and navigate deeply nested system menus without manual remote entry.
The feature marks a significant evolution from basic voice search to deep, device-level hardware control powered by artificial intelligence.
Direct Hardware Control via Natural Language
According to a statement from Yash K., Google TV Community Manager, the integration aims to eliminate the traditional friction of digging through multi-layered settings menus to optimize the viewing experience. By pressing and holding the microphone button on the remote, or using the “Hey Google” wake word, users can now engage in conversational adjustments.
The update introduces several primary functionalities:
- Audio and Video Calibration: Users can modify specific parameters such as brightness, contrast, volume, and sound modes using casual phrasing (e.g., “Set picture mode to Sport” or “Increase the bass”).
- Contextual Troubleshooting: The AI can diagnose and resolve display or audio issues based on user descriptions. For instance, stating “The screen is too dark” or “I can’t hear the dialogue clearly” prompts Gemini to automatically recalibrate the output.
- Content Optimization: Viewers can request situational profiles, such as asking the AI to configure a “cinematic experience” for movie nights.
- Direct Menu Navigation: Users can bypass manual clicks by commanding the TV to open specific sub-menus directly, such as displaying the network or display settings.
Rollout Timeline and Eligible Models
The TCL system update will roll out over the next few weeks to specific premium models within the United States. Google has confirmed the initial eligible U.S. lineup includes the QM9K, X11L, QM9L, QM8L, and RM9L series.
Users can manually check for the update by navigating to Settings > System > About > System update on their TCL devices.
Beyond the initial TCL rollout, Google noted that Gemini for TV voice capabilities are supported on a select broader ecosystem, including the Google TV Streamer, Walmart onn. 4K Pro, and specific Hisense models (U7, U8, UX).
Expansion Note: Google plans a massive expansion by late 2026, intending to bring Gemini for TV to additional Google TV devices running Android 14 or higher with at least 2 GB of RAM, while expanding regional and language support.
Age Restrictions and Guardrails
The Gemini for TV experience represents an AI-powered upgrade distinct from mobile or desktop Gemini apps. Because the system utilizes generative AI to answer broader queries—such as recommending tailored content or explaining complex educational topics—Google has implemented strict user guardrails.
The AI-driven responses are strictly restricted to user profiles registered to individuals 18 years of age or older. Gemini will be automatically disabled on Google TV kids’ profiles, while non-kids’ profiles for users under 18 will continue to default to standard Google Assistant responses.
Furthermore, Google issued a standard advisory noting that Gemini for TV is an evolving technology and its responses should not be relied upon for professional, medical, legal, or financial advice.
Availability
Eligible accounts will find a dedicated Gemini configuration option at the top navigation of the Google TV homepage, or under Settings > Accounts & Profiles > [User Account] > Voice assistant.
