T-Mobile is back on the baseball field, not with a glove, but with a 5G-powered assist. The wireless provider is helping Major League Baseball roll out its automated ball-strike (ABS) system at the major league level for the first time, using a private 5G network to support real-time decision-making during spring training games at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
Itās not quite robo-ump territory, but itās close.
ABS System Gets a Big-League Tryout
After years of testing in the minors and at MLBās All-Star Futures Game, the ABS system is making its way to spring training. Hawk-Eye cameras positioned around the ballpark track each pitch and help define the strike zone for individual players. Once a pitch is thrown, data zips through T-Mobileās private 5G connection and delivers quick verification to officials and support staff.
Laptops and tablets at the field are connected via T-Mobileās network, letting MLB staff review calls, adjust strike zones, and keep everything humming without delay. It’s tech doing the tedious stuff so the game can keep moving.
5G Rollout Across Stadiums
T-Mobile has already built out private 5G networks in 27 MLB stadiums, with plans to light up every ballpark by the end of the 2025 season. The aim? Keep operations sharp and fans connected, whether itās for reviewing plays or posting mid-inning hot dog selfies.
