AR and VR hardware is starting to move beyond the familiar bulky-headset formula. Google has Android XR, Samsung’s Galaxy XR is already on the market, and a growing collection of glasses from companies including XREAL, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster is pushing wearable computing toward lighter designs. Google says Android XR is being developed for headsets and glasses, with more hardware scheduled to arrive throughout 2026.
XREAL has an interesting position in that shift. The company has spent years building glasses that place a large virtual display in front of the wearer, and it is now working directly with Google on XREAL AURA, its first wired glasses powered by Android XR. Reservations for AURA opened in June, with release planned for fall 2026.
That growing interest in XR makes the X by XREAL, or XBX, a01 particularly timely. It isn’t an Android XR computer or a miniature Galaxy XR. Instead, it takes one of the most immediately useful pieces of the XR idea, putting a very large screen in a pair of lightweight glasses, and brings it to a $299 price point.
For someone curious about wearable displays but unwilling to spend four figures on a full headset, that may be the easier place to start.

What It Is
The XBX a01 is a pair of tethered display glasses that essentially turns a compatible phone, tablet, handheld gaming system, or computer into a private wearable screen.
XREAL’s XBX a01 makes wearable displays easier to understand and easier to afford: plug in a compatible device and suddenly the small screen in your hand feels a whole lot bigger.
Connect the glasses through USB-C and the Micro OLED panels create the appearance of a 147-inch display viewed from about 13 feet away. There is no built-in battery, so power and video come from the connected device through DisplayPort over USB-C. XREAL describes the a01 as an entry-level model in its spatial-display lineup.
That matters when you’re shopping in a category that increasingly lumps together everything from Meta Quest-style VR headsets to camera-equipped AI glasses and simple wearable monitors. Not every pair of smart glasses operates the same or needs to be considered for one’s needs. Sometimes they’re just a wearable screen.

XREAL equips the a01 with 0.6-inch Micro OLED panels running at 1920 x 1080 resolution per eye in 2D mode, with refresh rates reaching 120Hz. The glasses provide a 50-degree field of view, which produces the large-screen effect without requiring a conventional headset wrapped around the wearer’s face.
Brightness reaches a rated 1,600 nits at the eye, with 14 adjustment levels available. That extra headroom should prove useful when wearing the glasses in environments where ambient light can wash out a virtual screen.
The a01 supports HDR10 and AI-HDR, paired with a claimed 145% coverage of the sRGB color gamut and ΔE below 2 color accuracy. Those specifications put a surprising amount of display hardware into something considerably smaller than a television or monitor.
For gaming, the 120Hz refresh rate may be one of the more practical features. A handheld PC, compatible Android device, or other USB-C gaming system can become the source for a display that feels substantially larger than the panel built into the device.
Lightweight Enough for Travel

Weight remains one of the biggest challenges facing anything worn on the face for long periods. The a01 weighs 62 grams with its detachable front frame installed and 56 grams without it. XREAL uses an ultralight nylon construction rather than building the glasses around the heavier structure associated with self-contained XR headsets.
That makes the a01 particularly easy to picture in places where carrying a monitor isn’t practical. For instance, a commuter can connect it to a phone or tablet. Someone working from a hotel room can use it as a personal display without packing another screen. Air travelers can watch movies without balancing a tablet on a tray table. Handheld gamers can trade a seven-inch or eight-inch screen for something that feels closer to sitting in front of a large television.
None of those scenarios requires a new XR software ecosystem. The glasses simply become the screen. That can definitely be a satisfying scratch for an itch you might not have realized you had.
Swappable Front Frames Add Some Personality
The removable front section gives XREAL another way to keep the a01 from looking quite so technical. Users can swap the front frame for different designs, changing the appearance without replacing the glasses themselves. Removing the frame drops the weight by another six grams.

It is a small design choice, but wearable technology faces a different challenge than something tucked into a pocket. If people are expected to wear hardware on their faces in public, appearance matters almost as much as what is happening behind the lenses.
Google appears to be thinking along similar lines with Android XR. Its first planned audio-glasses collections are being developed with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, suggesting that the next stage of smart glasses will need to look increasingly like ordinary glasses rather than miniature headsets.
Where the a01 Fits Into Android XR
In short, it doesn’t. If that’s what you thought you were getting here, you’ve been given bad intel.
The a01 itself does not run Android XR, and that difference is worth keeping clear. Android XR is Google’s operating system for next-generation headsets and glasses. Samsung’s Galaxy XR became the first commercial device built on the platform, and Google has since detailed plans for audio glasses, display glasses, and wired XR hardware.
XREAL is directly involved in that future through AURA, which Google describes as XREAL’s first wired Android XR glasses.
The a01 occupies a simpler rung of the same broader hardware category. It does not need Gemini, cameras, spatial apps, or its own operating system to provide one of the clearest benefits associated with wearable displays: getting a large private screen without carrying one.

For buyers who find the idea of XR interesting but don’t yet need an entire computing platform attached to their head, that simplicity may actually work in its favor. Besides, it’s an affordable way to familiarize yourself with XREAL as a brand.
Who It’s For
The XBX a01 makes the most sense for buyers who already have a compatible device and know what they want to do with a larger portable display.
Mobile and handheld gamers are an obvious fit, particularly anyone using hardware that supports DisplayPort output over USB-C. Frequent travelers may appreciate having a cinema-sized virtual screen that fits inside a small case. Remote workers could use the glasses when desk space is limited, though anyone considering them primarily for productivity should think carefully about whether a fixed wearable display suits their workflow.
Compatibility needs consideration and attention before buying. USB-C alone does not guarantee video output, so the connected device must support DisplayPort Alt Mode or another supported video-output arrangement.
The a01 lacks some features found farther up XREAL’s lineup, including the more advanced spatial behavior that can keep virtual displays positioned relative to the wearer. It is designed first and foremost as a viewing device. That narrower focus helps explain the $299 price.

A Lower-Cost Way Into Wearable Displays
XR is starting to split into several distinct categories rather than moving toward a single type of headset. Samsung has a full Android XR headset on sale. Google and its partners are preparing lighter intelligent eyewear. XREAL has AURA coming for users who want Android XR in a wired-glasses format.
Then there are products such as the XBX a01, which strip the concept back to the part many buyers may use most: a big screen that goes wherever their phone, laptop, or handheld goes.
At $299, the XBX a01 provides a 1080p Micro OLED display, refresh rates up to 120Hz, 1,600-nit rated brightness, HDR support, USB-C connectivity, and a 62-gram design.
It won’t give buyers the full Android XR experience. That may be precisely why it makes sense as a first step into the category. The a01 asks for a cable and a compatible device rather than a wholesale change in how someone computes. For people who simply want to see what a wearable 147-inch screen feels like, XREAL has made the cost of finding out considerably easier to swallow.
