Pokémon GO Raises the Level Cap to 80 and Revamps Progression

Niantic is giving Pokémon GO Trainers a brand-new reason to lace up their virtual shoes. Starting October 15, 2025, the game’s long-awaited leveling revamp will roll out worldwide, bringing a higher level cap, streamlined XP requirements, new avatar rewards, and a daily login perk that keeps things moving, literally.

A Fresh Climb to Level 80

The Trainer level cap will jump from 50 to 80, marking the largest progression update since Pokémon GO’s original release. The overall system is being rebalanced to make level-ups feel more frequent and rewarding, with XP thresholds adjusted across the board.

Trainers will find that all XP earned up to this point will automatically apply to the new curve. Nobody’s getting bumped down a level, though the XP needed to reach the next milestone may change. According to Niantic, players at level 23 or higher will gain at least one level when the update goes live.

Those who previously tackled the old “Level-Up Research” challenges from 41 to 50 can rest easy because those tasks are being retired. Moving forward, Level-Up Research will only apply to levels 71 through 80, leaving earlier progression focused purely on XP and gameplay.

New Ways to Earn and Hatch

The update introduces the Daily Adventure Egg, a new free reward that kicks in at level 15. Each day, when a Trainer logs in, an egg automatically appears in a special incubator. Walk 1 km, and it hatches, rewarding 10,000 XP and a new Pokémon encounter. It doesn’t take up existing Egg storage, and yes, it supports Adventure Sync for those who track distance while the app is closed.

It’s a small addition that keeps the daily loop interesting, plus it makes those morning walks a bit more rewarding.

Avatar Rewards for Every Milestone

Fashion-forward Trainers have a lot to look forward to with new avatar rewards starting at level 25. These unlockables tie into Poké Ball tiers and beyond, offering new caps, shoes, jackets, and even unique poses and hairstyles as players reach higher levels.

Some highlights include:

  • Level 25–35: Poké Ball-themed apparel
  • Level 40–50: Great Ball-inspired items
  • Level 55–65: Ultra Ball cosmetics
  • Level 71–80: Exclusive “Level” series gear, including a jacket, shades, and new hairstyles

Trainers who already earned items like the Level 50 Jacket before the update will keep them, though new players won’t be able to unlock those specific legacy items.

Rewards, Storage, and Lucky Friends

Leveling now carries tangible in-game perks. Each new level brings expanded storage for Pokémon, Items, Gifts, and Postcards, in some cases even pushing players past current capacity limits.

Meanwhile, anyone who reaches level 70 or above will enjoy an increased chance of becoming Lucky Friends with their Best Friends, making those long-term friendships even more valuable.

The XP Curve, Rebalanced

For context, here’s a snapshot of the updated XP milestones:

  • Level 10: 48,000 XP
  • Level 30: 1,083,000 XP
  • Level 50: 12,753,000 XP
  • Level 60: 34,353,000 XP
  • Level 70: 85,853,000 XP
  • Level 80: 203,353,000 XP

Getting to the new top ranks won’t be a sprint, but Niantic’s tweaks should make each step feel more attainable.

Limited-Time XP Celebration Ultra Box

To mark the update, Niantic is bringing back the XP Celebration Ultra Box in the Pokémon GO Web Store. Priced at US$9.99, the bundle includes 15 Lucky Eggs, one Super Incubator, one Incubator, five Incense, and two Lure Modules which is perfect for those looking to jump-start their climb toward level 80. (Limit three per player.)

Leveling Up Never Looked So Good

The October update reshapes the leveling journey into something more engaging and rewarding, giving both casual and dedicated Trainers a reason to log in daily, hatch some Eggs, and see just how far their XP can take them.
