LG and NVIDIA announced a partnership to bring Tegra 2 dual-core processors to LG’s Optimus Series smartphones, with devices expected as early as Q4 2010. It was the first announced use of a dual-core CPU in a smartphone.
The Tegra 2 chip featured two 1GHz cores sharing workloads, an ultra low-power NVIDIA GeForce GPU, and a 1080p HD video processor. NVIDIA claimed the chip delivered up to 2x faster web browsing and up to 5x faster gaming performance over single-core 1GHz solutions. Flawless 1080p playback, console-quality gaming, and 3D capabilities were also highlighted.
The announcement left little doubt that the future LG T-Mobile handset rumored at the time was likely an Optimus-class device running Tegra 2.
