KardiaMobile: Keep a Smart EKG in Your Pocket

KardiaMobile: Keep a Smart EKG in Your Pocket

Most consumer health gadgets track trends. The KardiaMobile from AliveCor does something more specific: it records a single-lead, medical-grade electrocardiogram (EKG) on demand. At $79, it’s the most accessible FDA-cleared personal EKG on the market, and it’s been clinically validated across more than 100 peer-reviewed studies. That’s not a marketing claim. It reflects over a decade of development and more than 350 million EKGs recorded by its users.

Design & Build Quality

The KardiaMobile is a small rectangle roughly the size of a thick stick of gum, with two silver electrode pads on the face. It weighs under an ounce and fits in a wallet or pocket without any thought. Build quality is straightforward: it’s plastic, it’s minimal, and the simplicity is the point. There’s nothing to charge. The device runs on a CR2016 coin cell battery rated for up to two years of use at two to three EKGs per day.

The KardiaMobile does not use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It communicates with your smartphone through ultrasonic audio tones, which means it works with any compatible Android or iOS device without pairing. AliveCor maintains a compatibility list at kardia.com.

Setup

Setup is minimal. Download the free Kardia app, create an account, and register the device. The process takes a few minutes. From there, opening the app and placing your fingertips on both sensors initiates a 30-second recording. No calibration, no delays.

Performance

To take an EKG, you hold the KardiaMobile near your phone, open the Kardia app, and place one fingertip from each hand on the sensor pads. Within 30 seconds, the app produces a single-lead EKG trace alongside an Instant Analysis result. The device is FDA-cleared to detect Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), Bradycardia, Tachycardia, and Normal Sinus Rhythm.

For an unclassified or borderline result, or for a wider range of rhythm determinations including PVCs, SVE, and Wide QRS, the optional KardiaCare subscription provides access to additional AI analysis and board-certified cardiologist review. The subscription is not required and the device functions fully without it.

Results can be exported as PDF or emailed directly from the app, which makes sharing with a physician quick and practical. AliveCor’s algorithm underpinning the Instant Analysis has been evaluated in more than 170 peer-reviewed studies.

Features & Software

The Kardia app stores your full EKG history, tracks readings over time, and supports optional blood pressure and weight data integration. The interface is clean and navigable without any technical background. Notifications and reminders can be configured. The app runs on most Android and iOS devices; check kardia.com/compatibility before purchasing if you’re using an older device.

Warranty & Value

The KardiaMobile carries a standard AliveCor warranty and is available for $79 at Kardia.com, Amazon, Target, CVS, Walmart, and other major retailers. It is FSA and HSA eligible. A KardiaCare membership is available separately for users who want advanced determinations and clinician review.

Verdict

The KardiaMobile is an unusually practical piece of health tech. It doesn’t require a subscription, it doesn’t need charging, and it gives you shareable, medical-grade data in 30 seconds. At $79, it’s appropriate for anyone who’s been told to monitor their heart rhythm, anyone with a personal or family history of AFib, or anyone who simply wants a reliable baseline outside of clinical settings. It’s not a replacement for a doctor’s EKG, and it doesn’t detect heart attacks. But as a tool for tracking and sharing your heart rhythm, it’s straightforward, validated, and worth keeping in your bag.
