The Droid 2 was official. Pre-orders opened August 11 at Verizon Wireless, with the phone hitting stores on August 12 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year agreement. Customers with contracts ending by December 31, 2010 could upgrade to any smartphone, including the Droid 2, without penalty.
Standout features included being the first handset to launch with Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1, a 1GHz processor, a full multi-touch 3.7-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera with DVD-quality video and DLNA sharing, 8GB on-board memory plus an 8GB microSD expandable to 32GB, a redesigned symmetrical keyboard with raised keys, 3G Mobile Hotspot for up to five devices at $20 per month, full push corporate email with remote wipe, and Swype text input.
R2-D2 Edition
Verizon also announced a limited-edition R2-D2 Droid 2, available online only in September. The special version featured exclusive Star Wars content and external hardware designed to resemble the iconic Astromech droid. Those attending Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando had the first chance to preview it.
