Barnes & Noble announced the Nook HD and Nook HD+, both available for pre-order immediately and shipping in late October with retail availability in early November. Both ran a modified version of Android 4.0 and carried no advertising.

The Nook HD featured a 7-inch 1440×900 IPS display at 243 ppi (the highest resolution of any 7-inch tablet at launch), a 1.3GHz dual-core TI OMAP4470 processor, 1GB RAM, microSD expansion, HDMI output, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and up to 10.5 hours reading or 9 hours video battery life. Available in Snow and Smoke in 8GB ($199) and 16GB ($229).

The Nook HD+ featured a 9-inch 1920×1280 IPS display at 256 ppi, a faster 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, and the same output options as the HD, weighing just 18.2 oz. Available in Slate only at 16GB ($269) and 32GB ($299).

Both devices launched alongside new content services: Nook Video (streaming and download from HBO, Starz, Disney, Warner Bros., and others), UltraViolet support for physical disc purchases, Nook Profiles (per-user home screens with separate content and parental controls), a redesigned Newsstand with 3D-like page turns and built-in Scrapbook clipping, and Nook Catalog (shoppable brand catalogs from Pottery Barn, L.L.Bean, and others). An AC adapter was included at no extra cost. MicroSD expansion up to 64GB was supported on both models.
