Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, creating a two-platform flagship lineup aimed at the next wave of premium Android smartphones.
Both mobile platforms focus heavily on agentic AI, gaming, computational photography, and connectivity. Qualcomm says the expanded lineup gives phone makers more flexibility when designing premium devices rather than relying on a single flagship Snapdragon platform.
HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, and Xiaomi are among the brands expected to release smartphones powered by the new chips.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 Sits At The Top
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 takes the top position in Qualcomm’s new mobile portfolio and is intended for the company’s most advanced Android hardware.
A major focus is on-device agentic AI. Qualcomm describes these experiences as faster, more personal, and better able to adapt throughout the day. Rather than limiting AI to individual prompts and responses, the broader idea behind agentic software is to let assistants understand context and carry out more useful actions on a user’s behalf.
Gaming gets its own AI treatment through Adreno Neural Fusion. The technology uses AI to improve graphics, with Qualcomm targeting richer visuals and longer play sessions alongside higher-end mobile gaming performance.
Photography and video are another focus. Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 supports Advanced Professional Video, or APV, alongside Intelligent Pixel Control. Qualcomm says these systems provide deeper scene understanding and can produce more natural-looking photos and video while improving image quality.
The practical results will depend heavily on how individual smartphone manufacturers use these capabilities. A powerful imaging pipeline still needs capable camera hardware and good software tuning sitting around it.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Brings Many Of The Same Features
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 shares much of its underlying architecture with the Extreme platform. Qualcomm says the chip is produced using the same advanced 2nm process and incorporates its custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU, a rearchitected Adreno GPU, and an advanced Hexagon NPU for AI workloads.
The platform is designed to bring many of the same AI, gaming, imaging, and connectivity capabilities to a broader selection of top-tier smartphones.
Qualcomm has not provided detailed performance comparisons between the two chips in the supplied announcement, so the precise differences in CPU, GPU, AI performance, clock speeds, or efficiency remain unclear.
That distinction will matter once manufacturers begin revealing actual phones. The Extreme branding clearly establishes a higher rung in the Snapdragon hierarchy, but specifications and real-world testing will tell buyers how wide the gap turns out to be.
A Bigger Flagship Family For Android
Qualcomm Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets Chris Patrick described the two-platform lineup as a way to give manufacturers greater choice while expanding access to the company’s latest AI capabilities.
The approach could produce more variation among premium Android phones, with manufacturers able to select between two current-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite platforms depending on the performance, features, and positioning they want for a device.
Qualcomm has confirmed that Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 smartphones are coming from several major Android brands.
