Samsung Galaxy A50, A30 arrive for mid-tier needs

It might be the week of Mobile World Congress and the season of big, flagship phones, but that’s only part of the story. Indeed, there’s plenty on the horizon for mid-tier consumer needs, including a pair of new Samsung phones, the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30.

Although they share physical similarities each features slightly different internal hardware. On the surface they’ll look the same but will just enough unique to merit standalone models.

As to what’s identical, the two have 6.4-inch displays with 1,080 x 2,340 pixel resolution with “3D Glasstic” design. Moreover, they’re the exact same dimensions right down to the millimeter.

While both have a Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, the A50 has an on-screen fingerprint reader. The A30 slides the reader around back.

Both phones include 4,000mAh batteries and include Fast Charging, Samsung Pay, and a number of Bixby-based features. Samsung doesn’t disclose which version of Android powers the two but we assume it’s 9 Pie.

Galaxy A50

The Samsung Galaxy A50 is the more powerful of the duo with a octa-core (Quad 2.3GHz and Quad 1.7GHz) processor bolstered by 4GB RAM. Storage is listed at 64GB with a microSD expansion card slot for up to 512GB of media. A 6GB/128GB variation is also expected.

The rear of the Galaxy A50 houses three cameras, a 25-megapixel, 5-megapixel, and 8-megapixel shooter. Around front is a 25-megapixel sensor.

Samsung Galaxy A50 cameras:

Galaxy A30

The Samsung Galaxy A30 dials things down a bit with its dual 1.8GHz and Hexa 1.6GHz processor. Memory and storage options are 3GB RAM/32GB and 4GB/64GB with the same microSD expansion card slot.

As for cameras, this one has a 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel dual setup on the back. The front packs a 16-megapixel camera for selfies and video chat.

Availability

The Galaxy A50 will be offered in Black, White, Blue and Coral “inspired by scattered light”. The Galaxy A30 looks to be sold in Black, White, and Blue. Pricing and timing has not been disclosed.

ZTE offers up Blade V10 for select markets

ZTE this week announced its first 5G smartphone, the Axon 10 Pro 5G will arrive later this year. Before then, however, its Blade V10 will go on sale in select markets.

The ZTE Blade V10 isn’t a flagship model, but it will certainly feature some interesting details. Key among them is a 32-megapixel front-facing camera with AI technology.

The Blade V10 runs Android 9 Pie with ZTE’s custom MiFavor 9.0 user interface and comes in two memory and storage options. The 32GB model has 3GB RAM while the 64GB version houses 4GB RAM. It’s not clear what processor powers the Blade V10 but ZTE indicates it’s an octa-core 2.1GHz CPU.

With a large 6.3-inch (2,280 x 1,080 FHD) display, the handset has a 90.3 percent screen-to-body ratio and water drop cutout. The thin bezels and framing should make the Blade V10 easy to mange with one hand.

The real standout feature, of course, is the 32-megapixel front camera with AI smarts. The tech can adjust and perfect selfies regardless of environmental lighting. Similar to its predecessor, the Blade V9, it can produce clearer and softer images for low-light settings.

The ZTE Blade V10 can identify 300+ scenes in preview mode and will automatically adapt camera technology to grab the best shots possible. Around back we locate a 16-megapixel AI dual-camera with a secondary 5-megapixel shooter.

The Blade V10 will go on sale in Europe, Latin America and China starting in March. There’s no word on whether the US will get is own release. Pricing has not been announced, however a representative tells CNET it will cost about $300 USD. Look for it in black, blue, and green colors.

A variant, the Blade V10 Vita is also on the horizon, but ZTE has not disclosed the specifications. Reportedly it will run about $200, but we don’t know what differences are from the standard model. We might safely assume a slower CPU and lower resolution display.

ZTE intros Axon 10 Pro 5G as its first 5G phone

ZTE has become the latest smartphone maker to introduce a 5G handset. This week, at Mobile World Congress, ZTE announced its Axon 10 Pro 5G will arrive at some point in the first half of 2019.

ZTE didn’t disclose too many details of the Axon 10 Pro 5G but reveal it would feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with an SDX50 5G modem. Theoretically, the phone will reach download speeds of 2Gbps.

Other hardware expected in the phone include an in-display fingerprint sensor and triple rear camera setup. The three sensor configuration is comprised of a standard, wide angle, and telephoto lens; AI smarts will enhance the experience.

Around front, the Axon 10 Pro 5G will have a 20-megapixel selfie camera with a water drop cutout on the display.

It’s not clear what other hardware will help shape the phone but we suspect it will be quite powerful. The Axon is a flagship line for ZTE and is generally one of the best bang-for-buck propositions on the market.

If the press release is an indicator, the ZTE handset should be thin and will likely have a large display with narrow bezels.

The ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G will come to Europe and China in the coming months. It’s unknown whether it will be sold in the US but we imagine that’s the case. The phone maker also has a Blade V10 expected in select markets as soon as March.

Android Messages will soon get Allo-style Google Assistant

The writing has been on the wall for some time that Google Assistant might be headed for Android Messages. With Mt. View deciding to kill Allo last year it really seemed like only a matter of time before this happened, and today Google has announced that Assistant integration with Messages will be coming in the next few months.

First, let’s start with Google isn’t going to be reading your text messages. At least no more than they already are with its Smart Reply. Honestly, these new integrations with Google Assistant will just expand on this feature with what Google is calling “suggestion chips.” Google has promised that the design doesn’t allow Assistant access to the full chat and only pulls down information for the line that creates the chip.

With names and keywords, Google Assistant will pop up with a suggestion chip and you can then tap it to plug web information or links directly into your Messages. This will work with points of interests, movies, restaurants, and the weather according to Google.

This can also be manifested by using the Assistant button or squeeze feature. When you prompt Assistant this way while a Messages window is open, the results are sharable directly to your chat window. This is a nice touch for the times when maybe Google’s AI doesn’t present the suggestion chips when you wanted it to give you a hand automatically.

This shouldn’t come to a surprise to most. Allo has been sent to pasture to be retired by Google in the next year or so. Meanwhile, Android Messages has been tasked with taking over Allo’s role in Google’s messaging strategy. Adding Assistant to Messages along with future RCS options should allow Google to have a pretty robust messaging solution.

While we aren’t quite sure exactly when “the coming months” consists of, Google has been very active in adding new features to Messages lately. I’d say this one will hit sooner rather than later. A final note is that this will be English only when it initially launches.

Lenovo Announces phablet Tab V7

There’s been a trend at MWC 2019 so far this year. Things are getting weird and manufacturers are trying to fill the gap between tablets and phones. We’ve seen folding devices and even a second display case. Lenovo has now shown up to the party with a super large phone. Or is it a tablet?

That’s the line Lenovo wants to blur with the new Lenovo Tab V7. The device is a tablet form factor with smartphone connectivity and portability. Lenovo wants this to be the multimedia unit you’re used to with a tablet while offering you the ability to communicate on the go like a phone with 4G dual SIMs.

The Lenovo Tab V7 is a 6.9-inch tablet with an IPS FHD slim 18:9 display. While it’s in the same display size of the Nexus 7, the advancements in reducing bezels allow it to be in a much smaller overall package that you can realistically carry in your pocket. Lenovo actually boasts it’s 81% screen to the body.

Lenovo didn’t skimp on the battery to make sure this behemoth lasts you a reasonable amount of time. It has crammed a 5180mAh pack into the phablet. This paired with a consumption-minded Qualcomm Snapdragon 450, the Tab V7 should get you through most tasks and last a normal day.

The tablet should also offer decent performance with two different variants with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM. You should also have decent, but not great, storage space with either 32 or 64GB options. It’s not a powerhouse by any means, but the Tab V7 is shooting for practicality.

Rounding out the spec sheet are two front-facing speakers with Dolby Atmos, 5MP front shooter, and 13MP camera on the rear. The Tab V7 also has your security in mind with iris scanning face unlock and a fingerprint scanner located on the back of the tablet.

Nothing really catches the eye with the Lenovo Tab V7 but it might make an interesting no-frills device. Unfortunately, it looks like this one is headed only to emerging markets. Lenovo plans to launch in Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific regions.

Sony announces three cinema focused cellphones; the Xperia 1, Xperia 10, and Xperia 10 Plus at MWC 2019

Today Sony takes to the stage to launch three cinema focused cellphones including the Xperia 1, Xperia 10, and Xperia 10 Plus at Mobile World Congress 2019. All three models come with a cinema-friendly 21:9 aspect ratio.

What it means to go wide

Most phones these days use an 18:9 or even 19:9 aspect ratio. However, Sony has pushed it even further with this trio of Xperia phones opting for a 21:9 aspect ratio. In other words, they are taller and skinnier than most phones out there these days.

What this means for you is less black bars if you use your phone mainly for watching movies. Most TV shows are shot in 16:9 which was the old standard aspect ratio for phones. However, most movies go even wider and fit newer phones better, but still tend to have small black bars on the top and bottom.

By using a wider 21:9 aspect ratio movies will have even smaller black bars or none at all on the new Xperia line up. Filming on them will also give you that wider more cinematic look to your videos. That might even become useful if you plan to shoot movies with your phone. Not something unheard of as Netflix’s High Flying Bird was shot entirely on iPhones.

Not only does the taller thinner screen make a better fit for movies but it also gives you more space for multitasking in split screen view. The thinner candy bar style design of the phones also make them easier to hold.

Xperia 1

The Xperia 1 is Sony’s newest flagship and it features the world’s first 4K OLED 6.5-inch 21:9 CinemaWide display with HDR remastering technology. Combined with Sony’s Bravia X1 for mobile and HDR it ensures your videos will have the best color, clarity, and contrast.

The triple camera setup on the back includes a standard 26mm lens, a 2X optical zoom 52mm lens, and an ultra-wide 16mm lens. There is an optical electronic hybrid image stabilization on both the standard and zoom lens for sharper photos. Ultra-wide angle lenses don’t typically require any stabilization.

The BIONZ X for mobile cuts down on noise in your phones while the eye autofocus helps the camera focus on the most important part of your subject.

Making good on its cinematic claims the Xperia 1 allows you to shoot in 21:9 4K at 24FPS and choose from eight different expressions to apply to change the color tone. In case you’d rather watch movies than capture them then you’ll be happy to know that Dolby Atmos is on board. With Dolby Atmos enabled audio will flow around you immersing you in your favorite movies.

If you’re a gamer then the Sony didn’t forget about you either. With a special Game Enhancer mode, you’ll be able to block unwanted distractions such as notifications and even capture your gameplay or find tips online.

The Xperia 1 will be available beginning late Spring in the US with no mention of price at the moment. While it comes in Black, Purple, Gray, and White only Black and Purple will be available in the US.

Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus

The Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are what Sony is calling its super midrange phones. Both feature the same 21:9 aspect ratio of the X1 but with only a Full HD+ resolution. The Xperia 10 will only have a 6-inch display, however, while the Xperia 10 Plus will include a 6.5-inch display.

The front and rear cameras on both models support SteadyShot to prevent your videos from being blurry. You’ll also be able to shoot 4K video in 21:9 just like with the Xperia 1 with the rear cameras. However, only the Xperia 10 Plus includes a second camera with 2x optical zoom. At least both will have the ability to take photos with a bokeh effect.

The Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus will both support high-resolution audio including LDAC for the best wireless quality. With the use of Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine compressed audio files will also be upscaled for better quality. When it comes to security there is an always-on fingerprint scanner on both models housed in the power button on the side.

The Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus will be available will be available starting March 18 2019. The Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus come in Black, Silver, Navy, and Pink with an exclusive Gold color for the Xperia 10 Plus. However, only Black and Silver will be available in the US. The Xperia 10 will set you back $349.99 while the Xperia 10 Plus will run you $429.99.

As a special deal with Verizon, you’ll be able to get a $250 prepaid Mastercard when you switch to Verizon and activate your Sony Xperia 10 or Xperia 10 Plus.

LG annouces G8 ThinQ and V50 5G at Mobile World Congress

LG has never been the OEM to shy away from trying new things in the mobile space. From the ultra-wide cameras to a modular phone, LG has spearheaded the frontier of many tech ideas. This year is no different as LG is one of the first ones to hit the market with a 5G phone and a new LG G8 that can read your bloodlines?

Let’s start with the more obvious of the two. 5G is all the craze in mobile right now. Hell, I’m not even sure everyone knows what it really is, but everyone knows they want them some. LG is no exception and it has announced the LG G50 ThinQ 5G at Mobile World Congress 2019.

Sprint will be in the initial US carrier partner for this refresh of the V-series with some rather predictable specifications.

  • 6.4-inch 19:5:9 QHD+ OLED FullVision with 3120×1440 resolution and 538ppi
  • 6GB of RAM paired with 128GB of storage with microSD expansion up to 2TB

The LG V50 ThinQ 5G will only be available in a single color, Astro Black. Other features are staples of the V-series with BoomBox speakers, IP68 water resistance, rear fingerprint scanner, Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, and the 3.5mm headphone jack with Hi-Fi Quad DAC.

One last addition to this 5G edition is the LG Dual Screen. Essentially this glorified case cover is LG’s answer to the folding screens we are also seeing at MWC 2019. The Dual Screen is a 6.2-inch FHD+ OLED FullVision with 2160×1080. The sync process is handled by 3 Pogo pins and the accessory will be available in Aurora Black (why not match the Astro Black of the V50 ThinQ 5G?)

LG G8 ThinQ

If you thought the LG Dual Screen was the craziest thing LG was bringing to the table this year, then you were sorely mistaken. The company also unveiled the new LG G8 ThinQ today. What’s the biggest selling point? Advanced biometrics that can read the blood in your veins to interact with the phone.

Yep, it reads your palm to utilize things like gesture controls and to unlock the display. LG call it Air Motion and Hand ID.

Let’s start with Hand ID. The new biometrics uses the shape and thickness of the patterns of veins in your hand to create a user profile to secure the device. Once the setup is completed, placing your hand a short distance over the screen will unlock it.

Now for the Tony Stark part, Air Motion. This is pulled off by the new Z Camera found on the front of the LG G8 ThinQ that has advanced depth perception via infrared Time of Flight. While it should make for better depth of field photos, the selling point is that users can interact with things like apps and volume controls without physically touching the phone. This is accomplished by motioning your hand in front of the camera and turning your hand much like opening a doorknob or swiping gestures.

Another mentionable is the Crystal Sound OLED panel. While this would normally pertain to resolution and display quality, but this time it’s about sound. The LG G8 ThinQ has removed the top ear piece to make room for Air Motion and the sound is produced by vibrating the OLED display.

When it comes to spec, the G8 ThinQ is very similar to the V50 minus 5G and an additional rear camera sensor.

Not to forget about the budget minded, LG has also made a competitor for the likes of the iPhone XS and Galaxy S10e with a slightly stripped down LG G8s ThinQ. It shares the same battery, RAM, and Snapdragon 855 as its brother. However, it will be available with only 64GB of RAM, 2248×1080 6.2-inch screen, and no microSD slot.

Pricing and official dates of sale are not currently available at the moment, but history stays early spring and the initial pricing will be far too high with significant carrier discounts to follow.

Alcatel launches three affordable phones, 10-inch tablet

Today Alcatel is announcing the Alcatel 1S, Alcatel 3, Alcatel 3L, and Alcatel 3T 10 for Mobile World Congress. These three new phones and 10-inch tablet join Alcatel’s family of affordable mobile devices.

Alcatel 1S

The Alcatel 1S is the most affordable of the bunch with a price of €109 EUR or $124 USD. For such an affordable price the Alcatel 1S comes with the essentials of a modern smartphone and then some. Starting with a 5.5-inch 18:9 HD+ Full View Display, an octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a microSD card slot.

On top of that, the Alcatel 1S also includes a 13MP + 2MP dual camera setup on the back with real-time bokeh and AI scene detection. While on the front there is a When it comes to security not only does it have a fingerprint scanner on the back but Face Key facial recognition.

There is even a massive 3060mAh battery and it comes with Android 9 Pie out of the box. The Alcatel 1S will be available in Q2 2019 in Black, Blue, and a choice of Rose or Gold brushed metallic finishes.

Alcatel 3L

The Alcatel 3L steps it up a little with a price of €139 EUR or $158 USD. For this price bump, you’ll get a 5.9-inch HD+ Super Full View with a mini notch featuring an 88 percent screen to body ratio. It will be powered by a Snapdragon 429 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 3500mAh battery. It comes with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box but will be upgradeable to Android 9 Pie in Q2 of 2019.

The rear camera will feature a 13MP + 5MP dual camera setup that includes AI scene detection along with bokeh blur that allows you to refocus your photos. You’ll also have access to Google Lens to search for products online, copy and paste text, and more using the camera. For your selfies, there is an 8MP camera on the front of the Alcatel 3L.

When it comes to security, it will lack a fingerprint scanner but use Face Key facial scanning. The Alcatel 3L will be available for purchase starting Q2 of 2019 and comes in Anthracite black and Metallic blue color options.

Alcatel 3

The Alcatel 3 is the most expensive of the trio of phones starting at €159 EUR or $180 USD for the 3GB + 32GB model and €189 EUR or $215 USD for the 4GB + 64GB model. Naturally, the Alcatel 3 will have the best specs of them all. Starting with a 5.9-inch 19.5:9 HD+ Super Full View Display with mini notch featuring an 88 percent screen to body ratio.

Powering it will be the Snapdragon 450 SoC with a choice of 3GB RAM with 32GB of storage or 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage. Along with a microSD card slot for expandable storage and a 3500mAh battery.

On the back is a 13MP + 5MP dual camera setup with AI scene detection and real-time bokeh. The real-time bokeh will allow you to take portrait shots and refocus later. While the AI scene detection will recognize up to 21 different scenarios adjusting the settings to ensure you get the best shot possible.

Google Lens is also included to help you search for products online, search items in the world around you, identify plants and animals in real time, and more. The 8MP front-facing camera allows you to take selfies and even create AR emojis to share with friends and family.

There is a fingerprint scanner included on the back of the Alcatel 3 for security as well as Face Key facial scan technology to unlock your phone. The Alcatel 3 will be available starting in Q2 of 2019 and come in Gradient Black Blue and Gradient Blue Purple.

Alcatel 3T 10

The Alcatel 3T 10 is Alcatel’s 10-inch HD widescreen tablet offering for Mobile World Congress. It comes with a long-lasting 4080mAh battery with front-facing speakers to enhance all your favorite videos and games.

The Alcatel 3T 10 will also ship with Android 9 Pie with Google Assistant pre-installed. With Google Assistant you’ll be able to ask questions control your smart home and playback of music or videos.

There is also an optional Audio Station accessory for the Alcatel 3T 10. Using the Audio Station will add deep bass to your movies and music for up to 7 hours. When connected to your Alcatel 3T 10 the Audio Station will give instant access to the tablet’s most used apps, photos, calendar, music and weather forecast.

The Audio Station includes a built-in tablet stand, microSD card slot, 3.5mm aux jack, and micro USB charging port. The Alcatel 3T 10 will be available later this year starting at €179 EUR or $203 USD. The bundle including the Audio Station will start at €229 EUR or $260 USD.
