Oh boy, big news for all you avid readers and content hoarders out there! If you’ve been relying on Pocket to save those fascinating articles and videos for later, get ready for a change. As a user since at least 2011, this one hits home.
It looks like Pocket is officially shutting down its services on July 8, 2025. Yep, that’s the big date to mark on your calendars. After that, you won’t be able to hop onto the Pocket website, use the apps, or even access its API.
And there’s more: if you’re a fan of the Pocket web extensions, they’ll no longer be available for installation from May 22, 2025. Plus, if you’ve never installed the Pocket app, you won’t be able to after that same date.
So, why the big farewell? Mozilla, the folks behind Pocket, says that the way we use the internet has simply changed. They’re shifting their focus and resources to projects that better fit how we browse and consume content online these days. You can read more about the company’s decision on their blog.
Now, don’t panic about your saved goodies just yet! You’ve got until October 8, 2025, to export all your saved items and API data before they’re permanently gone. So, plenty of time to transfer those must-reads!
While Pocket itself is wrapping up, Mozilla isn’t completely abandoning the idea of content curation. They’ll still be looking into recommendations through other avenues, like your New Tab experience and email newsletters. So, the spirit of discovering great content may live on, just in a different form. I hope that’s true, but Pocket’s parent company has a less than stellar track record of new ideas in recent memory.
