Muse by Interaxon has officially expanded its Sleep, by Design ecosystem with the launch of Smart Wakeup. This new feature leverages real-time EEG data to identify the optimal moment to transition a user from sleep to wakefulness, ensuring the alarm resonates with the brain’s natural rhythms rather than disrupting them.
Syncing with Your Biology
The Smart Wakeup tool acts as the final piece of Muse’s comprehensive sleep suite. While Sleep Assist helps users drift off and Deep Sleep Boost enhances restorative rest, Smart Wakeup focuses on the exit strategy. By monitoring neural activity, the system triggers a gentle audio fade-in during lighter sleep phases, effectively utilizing the brain’s “natural exit ramp” to minimize morning grogginess.
Insights from 6,200 Nights of Data
The development of this technology was driven by an internal study involving 1,300 users and over 6,000 nights of brainwave data. While sleep duration remains the primary driver of morning mood, the study revealed a significant secondary factor: sleep stage at the time of waking. For those already achieving healthy sleep (over seven hours), waking during a light sleep cycle led to a measurable boost in morning alertness compared to being jolted out of deep sleep.
A Word from the CEO
“For too long, the traditional alarm clock has been a blunt instrument, oblivious to the complex neural processes happening just before we wake up. With Smart Wakeup, we are moving past ‘guessing’ and into ‘knowing.’ By using clinical-grade EEG technology, we’re giving our users a way to start their day that is scientifically aligned with their biology.” —Jean-Michel (JM) Fournier, CEO of Interaxon (Muse)
Precision vs. Estimation
Unlike wearable trackers that rely on wrist movement or heart rate to estimate sleep cycles, Muse utilizes direct EEG (electroencephalography) measurements. This allows for laboratory-level accuracy in distinguishing between deep, REM, and light sleep. In a window of 30 to 60 minutes before your final deadline, the device waits for the precise moment your brain is readiest to wake. If no light-sleep window is detected, the alarm sounds at the latest designated time to ensure you stay on schedule.
Future Horizons: The 2026 Roadmap
Following today’s launch, Muse plans to roll out several advanced updates throughout the year:
- Sleep Goal Wake: Alarms triggered only once specific recovery metrics are achieved.
- Dream Retention Mode: Targeted wake-ups during REM cycles to aid in dream journaling.
- Hypnopompic Audio: Guided content delivered during the twilight state between sleep and consciousness.
Technical Compatibility and Launch
As of April 15, 2026, Smart Wakeup is available to Muse Premium subscribers. The feature is compatible with the following hardware:
- Muse S (Gen 1 & 2)
- Muse S Athena (iOS and Android)
While Smart Wakeup requires a subscription, Deep Sleep Boost remains a free inclusion for all Muse S Athena users, and Sleep Assist continues to be available across the entire Muse S product line.
