Motorola announced the Defy for T-Mobile USA, debuting the phone on the season premiere of The Oprah Winfrey Show. The scratch-resistant, water-resistant, and dust-proof smartphone was set for holiday availability.
The Defy featured a 3.7-inch WVGA scratch-resistant touchscreen, MOTOBLUR, a 5-megapixel camera with flash, autofocus, and digital zoom, and a Flash Lite-enabled browser. CrystalTalk PLUS dual-microphone audio filtered background noise and amplified voice in noisy environments. DLNA support allowed streaming and sharing content with compatible home devices like HDTVs, game consoles, and PCs. A Connected Music Player let users view lyrics and download music directly from the phone.
The Defy previously debuted in the European market ahead of the US announcement. Its position on T-Mobile’s roadmap — whether it was Project Jordan or Project Begonia — remained unconfirmed. No Android version or price was announced at launch, though the use of Flash Lite (rather than full Flash) suggested something below Android 2.2.
