Google is bringing its Personal Intelligence feature to Gemini in Android Auto, giving drivers a more personalized way to find information, navigate to destinations, and manage everyday tasks without reaching for their phones. The feature begins rolling out today, with support for vehicles featuring Google built-in arriving in the coming months.
Gemini is already available globally on Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in, but Personal Intelligence takes things further by connecting information from Google services that drivers already use. With permission, Gemini can access relevant details from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Search to provide answers that reflect individual schedules, preferences, and past activity.
Gemini Can Connect the Dots Across Google Apps
The biggest change is Gemini’s ability to retrieve personal information and combine details from different sources into a single response.
For example, a driver heading to the airport can ask Gemini for their flight’s departure gate and current status. Rather than opening an email confirmation and checking another service for updates, Gemini can gather the relevant information through a spoken request.
Navigation becomes more conversational, too. Someone heading to a medical appointment can simply ask Gemini to take them there, without providing an address. The assistant can reference calendar information to determine the destination.
Google says Gemini can even locate a business from a previously captured photo. Asking it to find a car wash photographed last week and navigate there could eliminate the need to search through a camera roll.
Recommendations That Reflect Personal Preferences
Personal Intelligence extends into recommendations and everyday planning.
Drivers looking for somewhere to eat can request restaurants along their route that match their usual preferences. Someone who follows a vegetarian diet, for example, could receive suggestions reflecting that preference.
Gemini can reference earlier conversations, allowing drivers to revisit a destination discussed previously without repeating its name or location.
These capabilities could prove particularly useful during longer drives or trips through unfamiliar areas, where searching through multiple apps isn’t practical.
Privacy Controls and Availability
Google says Personal Intelligence is optional and requires users to connect their apps before Gemini can access personal information. Connections can be managed or disabled through Gemini settings.
For vehicles with Google built-in, Google says personalized responses are shared only when the driver is inside the vehicle with their phone connected.
Drivers who choose not to activate Personal Intelligence can continue using Gemini for navigation, music, phone calls, and general questions.
The rollout starts October 19 for Android Auto, with availability expanding to vehicles with Google built-in over the coming months. Users who previously activated Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app will have their preferences carried into the car.
The feature’s appeal is straightforward: fewer searches, less repeated information, and a voice assistant that has a better understanding of where the driver needs to go and why.
