Google Brings Gemini AI to Android Auto and Google Built-in Vehicles

Google is expanding its connected car experience with the introduction of Gemini, the company’s AI-powered assistant, to vehicles equipped with Android Auto and Google built-in systems. Designed to streamline tasks and enhance in-car productivity, Gemini offers a more conversational, hands-free approach to common driving needs, without requiring specific commands or tedious menu navigation.

Smarter Driving with Gemini

Gemini integrates with Google Maps, YouTube Music, Spotify, Calendar, and even Gmail to help drivers stay focused on the road while managing everyday tasks. Need to find a taco spot en route? Gemini can handle that, along with reading reviews and answering common questions about businesses. It can also sift through your inbox to locate buried calendar events, like the address for your kid’s soccer game.

One standout feature is Gemini’s ability to remember user preferences, such as sending messages to certain contacts in specific languages. When messaging a friend who prefers Spanish, for instance, Gemini can translate and craft responses accordingly, making multilingual communication easier, even mid-drive.

Gemini Live: Conversations on the Go

Gemini Live adds another layer of interactivity by offering conversational brainstorming while on the road. A simple “Hey Google, let’s talk” prompt kicks off a dialogue where drivers can get advice, plan for meetings, or explore topics without taking their hands off the wheel. Whether it’s preparing for a promotion discussion or seeking productivity tips, Gemini Live provides real-time assistance tailored to each query.

More Apps, More Features

Beyond Gemini, Google is expanding its in-car app catalog with new categories like games and video content. These additions aim to make idle time, such as EV charging sessions or school pickup lines, a little more entertaining.

Digital car keys are also seeing broader support. Google is rolling out compatibility to more brands, including Audi, Volvo, and Polestar, allowing drivers to unlock and start their vehicles using their smartphones.

Availability and What’s Next

Gemini will be coming to Android Auto-enabled vehicles in the coming months, with availability in cars featuring Google built-in systems, like the upcoming Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5, and Honda Passport, expected later this year.

Google plans to showcase these advancements during its Google I/O event next week, with live demonstrations highlighting how Android Auto and Google built-in continue to evolve.
