Google has unveiled Material 3 Expressive, its most ambitious Android design update in years, with a focus on personal style, smoother interactions, and helpful glanceable information. Building upon the foundation of Material You, this update introduces expanded customization options and more fluid animations that aim to make every interaction feel personal and intuitive.
A More Expressive and Responsive Phone Experience
Material 3 Expressive enhances Android’s visual personality with new dynamic color themes, responsive components, and refreshed typography. Users can expect more granular control over their device’s appearance, with visual choices extending into popular Google apps like Photos, Fitbit, and Gmail.
Animations receive special attention, with springy, natural movements designed to add subtle delight. For instance, dismissing a notification triggers nearby notifications to react fluidly, accompanied by haptic feedback for a tactile finish. System elements such as the volume slider and Quick Settings panel have been reworked to feel lighter and more interactive, incorporating depth effects like subtle blurs for better visual context.
Quick Settings is now more flexible, letting users prioritize frequently used actions like Flashlight and Do Not Disturb. Notifications have been restructured to prevent important alerts from getting buried.
A key addition is Live Updates, a feature that keeps real-time progress notifications—such as food deliveries or rideshare statuses—visible and glanceable without needing to dig through apps.
Material 3 Expressive Comes to Wear OS
On smartwatches, Material 3 Expressive has been thoughtfully adapted for round displays. Animations follow the curve of the screen, with scrolling lists and shape-morphing elements enhancing depth and accessibility. The update introduces dynamic color theming across the system, ensuring a consistent look from the watch face to the interface.

Interactive elements like buttons and tiles have been optimized for small screens. Buttons now “hug” the edges of the display for better tap targets, while tiles provide quick access to key actions like messaging or fitness tracking.
Wear OS 6 also brings meaningful performance gains, promising up to 10% longer battery life, helping users get more out of their devices.
Availability and Next Steps
Material 3 Expressive will debut on Pixel phones and watches later this year, with Google working closely with partners to extend these improvements to more devices running Android 16 and Wear OS 6.
