Play Destiny 2 and Immortals Fenyx Rising demo free on Stadia, no subscription required

Stadia finally implemented a free tier earlier this year, but one of the biggest drawbacks was that you still needed to buy games to try it out. That restriction will soon be gone, at least for players of Destiny 2.

Beginning on November 19, 2020, Destiny 2 is going free-to-play on the cloud gaming service. Every person with a Stadia account, whether free or the Pro subscription, will have access to the game. However, only the core game will be free, much like when Bungie made the game free-to-play earlier this year.

That’s not the only game you can play for free on Stadia at the moment. Last month, a free limited-time demo version of Immortals Fenyx Rising was made available on service. If you haven’t played it yet, there is still a chance to try out Ubisoft’s new IP until December 21.

That gives you plenty of time to decide whether you like it or not before the official release on December 3, 2020, where it will be available for purchase on Stadia or Amazon for most other platforms.

However, it’s important to note that Stadia’s free tier is limited to 1080p at 60fps with stereo sound. If you want to play in 4K HDR with surround sound, then you’ll need a Pro subscription. You’ll also need a Stadia controller and Chromecast Ultra if you want to play on your TV, which can be purchased in a bundle from Google. Otherwise, you’ll only be able to play on your phone, computer, or Chromebook.

When Google first launched Stadia last year it fell short of its lofty goals leaving many users underwhelmed with the service. Two of the biggest complaints at launch were the lack of games and the absence of a free tier.

Over the past year, Google has addressed these concerns and more by expanding its library of games, improving the service, and adding new features. Many of these were covered in my recent review of the cloud gaming service, including the addition of the free tier.

Pokemon GO ‘Go Beyond’ is the game’s biggest update to date

Pokemon GO has evolved quite a bit over the last few years with incremental updates and features being added in on a fairly regular basis.

Whether it’s additions like friends, trading, and battles or the ever-present Community Day or spotlight hours, the game almost always has something “new” to do.

Today, however, sees Pokemon GO announcing its biggest update in the game’s four-year history. Dubbed “Go Beyond”, it ushers in new and exciting features for all level of players, including those who had already hit Level 40.

Level 50

Effective November 30, the game will allow for players to continue on their quest to be the best trainer, with a new cap set at Level 50. And it’s not just about getting more XP, either. Indeed, players who have hit level 40 will now find they have to complete challenges and tasks as part of the leveling up process.

What kind of challenges might one have to do? How about catching 200 Pokemon in one day? Or, perhaps throwing 50 excellent balls or completing 100 Field Research tasks. Of course XP is still going to be a major task in and of itself with no less than six million required for hitting Level 41.

XL Candy

Not only do players have the opportunity to level up, so do the Pokemon, too. A new addition to the game, XL Candy, lets players power up their favorite Pokemon beyond the current maximum to match their trainer’s abilities. XL Candy can be acquired by catching Pokemon, converting regular candy, or through rewards for challenges.

Trainers who reach Level 40 prior to November 30 will be blessed with some fun in-game rewards. Rest assured that Niantic is making every effort possible to help trainers rack up XP ahead of the fateful day. A 12 Days of Friendship event gets started today!

Seasons

Starting December 1, Pokemon GO will kick off new “seasons” which are three-month periods tied to the real world seasons. Not only will you find that the regular spawn pool will change, but Mega Evolutions, Go Battle League, and other features are expected to adjust.

The first season, the Season of Celebration, will give trainers the chance to participate in a series of in-game events where Pokémon from different regions will appear.

Kalos Region

Pokemon GO also sees the introduction of another group of Pokemon to catch, hatch, and battle. That’s right, the Kalos region arrives on December 2, bringing about Pyroar, Froakie, Fletchling, and more! Keep you eyes open for a Celebration Event to run from December 2-8.

Go Battle League

Players who like to challenge others in head-to-head battles will see the ranking and leveling system expand. Moving from 10 levels to a total of 24, those who reach the final four levels will earn medals based on where they end up.

Teach to One is an innovative tailored learning platform developed by New Classrooms Innovation Partners, the team that created School of One. School of One launched in 2009 in the New York Department of Education as a school-based learning solution that integrated live, online, and collaborative learning in ways that met the unique needs of each learner each day. It quickly became a staple in math classrooms throughout the city and, by November of that same year, earned recognition as one of Time magazine’s Best Inventions of the Year.

Superintendent Scott Muri of Ector, Texas, notes that a major reason for partnering with Teach to One was the platform’s commitment to student success and flexibility to adapt to what schools needed. In an interview, Muri shared that the solution that Teach to One offers “is particularly relevant now because we know that every single student will have experienced widely different learning trajectories over these months when schools have been closed.”

As New Classrooms worked with its partner schools to ensure an effective transition to a virtual learning platform, each partner school and school district made fast decisions to help each of its students create an environment that was compatible with virtual learning and comparable to the in-person approach with which many students were already so comfortable. Teach to One schools and teachers across the country felt at ease when it came to their daily math lessons knowing that the structure of their usual math classes was possible to complete remotely.

With the digital tools that Teach to One offered to its partner schools, students were able to identify their personalized math lesson each day, and teachers quickly adapted to using Zoom to establish a new way to have face-to-face teacher-led instruction. They even used breakout rooms for students to continue Teach to One’s Student Collaboration modality, one of seven approaches that Teach to One offers to help students explore, learn, and master math concepts.

As we are now well into the 2020-2021 school year, Teach to One has provided more opportunities to assist students, parents, and schools across the country by offering Teach to One Roadmaps and redesigning the platform as a holistic, personalized learning approach aptly named Teach to One 360.

“Now, more than ever, students will need viable, precise, personalized pathways to get back on track,” said Joel Rose, CEO of New Classrooms. “Roadmaps provides teachers and parents with the state-of-the-art tools that are necessary to make that a reality.”

The Power of Tailored Acceleration

Teach to One challenges the traditional concept that all students need to learn the same thing at the same time. Tailored acceleration allows students to follow a pathway created just for them – a unique blend of pre-grade, on-grade, and post-grade skills – enabling them to fill the gaps of unfinished learning and accelerate to grade level and beyond based on their unique strengths and learning styles.

Benefits of tailored acceleration for understanding and retaining math concepts include:

  • Mastering all levels of essential math skills versus mastering only on-grade materials, as seen in traditional instruction.
  • Utilizing multiple instruction modalities so that students can learn concepts in a way that works for them. These modalities include teacher-led lessons, peer collaboration, and independent learning.

Teach to One is a solution to helping solve the problem of gaps in learning. Traditional mathematics instruction leaves many students behind as they advance through school. Because math is cumulative, if they don’t master one concept, students struggle as they move on to learning more complex concepts and skills.

In 2019, New Classrooms published a report on the major effects of learning gaps in math. Direct experience and research taught the team that many students enter middle school with unfinished learning from years prior. In math, the issue is compounded because it is a cumulative subject. When schools simply focus on grade-level material, the students who have fallen behind continue to fall further behind. New Classrooms coined this term “The Iceberg Problem,” as declines in proficiency can be masked yet accumulating beneath the surface.

With tailored acceleration, Teach to One aims to address the Iceberg Problem, mitigating and closing the gap of unfinished learning while maintaining high expectations and accountability and promoting educational equity across a varied student population. Teach to One’s main objective is to ensure that all students attain college and career readiness in math.

Student access to tailored lesson plans to meet their individual needs is important to the New Classrooms team. The hard-hitting effects that we have seen and continue to see with the COVID-19 pandemic are presenting monumental pressures on the education system and the students within it.

  • Roadmaps Home is designed to help parents and students accelerate at-home learning. Roadmaps Plus adds instructional tools and curated content specifically aligned to each student’s personalized roadmap. Classroom planning and grouping enable teachers to determine the best way to help each student work through their roadmap.

Google Fit and Wear OS are getting improvements to sleep tracking, social sharing, and more

These days, it’s more important than ever to keep track of your health and try to stay in shape. However, keeping track of all of this can be a huge ordeal. The sheer number of fitness trackers and apps available can be a little daunting, to say the least. Enter Google Fit, which does its best to collect all of this data and present it in helpful ways.

With the latest update, new features have been added to Google Fit and Wear OS, along with some UI tweaks to ensure you keep hitting your fitness and wellness goals.

Getting a good night’s rest is one of the most important parts of staying healthy. Unfortunately, getting enough sleep isn’t always easy to come by, but at least we’ll all be able to keep track of this information better with the new improvements to Google Fit.

The latest update to the app will provide even more sleep data than before, such as being able to view sleep stages or nightly activity. There will also be an option to set a bedtime schedule goal, in case you’re like me and have trouble getting into bed on time.

Devices that sync sleep data with Google Fit include, the Fossil Gen 5E Smartwatch, Oura Ring, or Withings sleep tracking mat. It also works with popular sleep tracking apps such as Sleep As Android or Sleep Cycle. In the future, the list of supported apps and devices will continue to grow, so keep an eye out to see if yours is added.

Exercise is more fun with friends, and the social share feature allows you to share stats, routes, or photos from your Google Fit journal entries. Now, you’ll be able to challenge friends or simply celebrate as you hit your new fitness goals by sharing on social media or through messenger apps.

Of course, if you’re going to be sharing your workouts, it would help if those were convenient to track. That’s where the Google Fit Workouts Tile comes into play. It helps you get to your workout as quickly as possible with shortcuts to your most recent workouts, as well as allowing you to view all your metrics on one screen. For those that need a little extra motivation, you can even set up workout goals and receive alerts to make sure you keep your pace up.

The new Wear OS Breathe Tile will help you do just that, with guided breathing sessions. It even gives you a summary at the end showing how your heart rate changed as well as providing a recap at the end of the week.

Finally, the Weather Tile is getting a UI refresh on Wear OS that’s easier to read with enhanced details about precipitation and weather alerts.

Google unveils Black Friday Deals at Google Store

I’m pretty sure that most people know about Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving is arguably the biggest day for retail sales in the United States. Big box stores offer deep discounts for popular items. Google has decided to give us a sneak peek of its impending discounts for the Google Store this year.

Google is spreading these reductions across two different days. The first wave is November 22 and the next starts on November 25. These discounts include steep cuts on many of Google’s lineup like Nest audio speakers, Pixel 5, Nest Hub displays, and even the Nest Thermostats.

While all of these are great, the two largest price cuts that jump out are the Nest WiFi Router and Access Point combo by $80 and the Google Home Max by half at $150. The Google Home Max is notable for the steep discount and the fact that it’s the only part of the speaker lineup not carrying the new Nest branding. This could be Google purging inventory for an update Nest Home Max in the near future. Regardless, it’s half off and makes for a compelling time to snag this monster speaker.

The Pixel 4a now comes in a new limited-edition Barely Blue color

Ever since Google first launched its Pixel “a” series of phones with the Pixel 3a last year, it has proven to be a huge hit, and for good reason. The budget handset from the search giant packs in most of the essential features, such as a killer camera, fantastic battery life, and top-notch software support. In fact, in our review, Scott called it “all the phone I will need for the next year or more.” Plus, the best part is, it’s not going to break the bank at a very reasonable price of $350.

Now, fans of the series have something else to get excited about, because Google is introducing a new color to the Pixel 4a lineup in the shade of Barely Blue. For those of you who find the black one a little boring, this is fantastic news. The only bad news is, it’s limited-edition, and if you’re not a fan of pastel blue, then you’re going to be disappointed.

As the name suggests, the new color is barely blue, using a light pale shade of blue for the plastic case of the phone. The fingerprint sensor is dyed to match, with the black camera bump and orange power button being the only pops of contrasting color.

It’s not the first time Google has introduced a limited edition color to one of its Pixel phones. Last year we saw something similar with the Oh So Orange Pixel 4, which only came in stock a couple of times and is now much harder to come by.
