Why is Ethereum Still a Favorite of Many Developers?

Why is Ethereum Still a Favorite of Many Developers?

If you’ve been following the crypto space for a while, you’ve probably noticed that digital currencies have become exceedingly popular. That also means their use cases are changing. In the past, people only focused on using them for investment and payment. Today, tokens like Ethereum have brought new possibilities, allowing developers to create virtually anything they can imagine. And because of this continued adoption, Binance recently reported that Ethereum’s value rose to 14.2% in September 2025.

As demand continues to increase, the price of Ethereum also increases. This trend could continue, regardless of the emergence of competitor networks like Solana and Cardano. Remember, Ethereum is not as rigid as Bitcoin. Its Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) allows developers to write and deploy smart contracts in a Turing-complete language. This flexibility means the token can host decentralized exchanges, lending protocols and even IoT marketplaces.

By July 2024, the token was leading in active developer count, with the Electric Capital Developer Report indicating 8,865 active participants. It has not stopped leading in 2025, as PatentPC thinks more than 5,000 developers use the network actively. Although the numbers have slightly reduced, why do developers, including Android, still prefer this network?

The Appeal of Smart Contracts

If something gives Ethereum an advantage, it is its unmatched support for smart contracts. Smart contracts are programs on a blockchain that automatically enforce agreements, with the rules and conditions embedded directly in their code. Once specific conditions are met, these features execute predetermined actions. This removes the need for intermediaries, ensuring processes are more efficient and automated.

MoldStud has recently published an article, claiming that eliminating intermediaries reduces operational costs by as much as 30%. Consider an industry like real estate, for instance. Renting an apartment through a traditional lease can be pretty complicated. You must deal with lawyers and other third parties to enforce a contract. But with an Ethereum-based smart contract, you can do all that automatically. Once you send payment, the digital key to the apartment unlocks, without anyone worrying about delays or disputes.

Looking at the statistics, Fortune Business Insights values the global smart contract market at $2.14 billion. It could continue expanding at a 23.9% CAGR, translating to a volume of more than $12 billion by 2032. This network’s interoperability could also attract more developers. Interoperability allows, say, your lending app to connect with someone else’s exchange or wallet without any special arrangements.

Online Security Has Become Non-negotiable

In 2024 alone, Android malware attacks reached 33.3 million. Given the innovativeness of cybercriminals, you can imagine what this figure will be like in the next few years. This is why the world is gravitating to more secure infrastructure. Loyalty to traditional systems that can’t match the ever-evolving cybercriminals has no place in today’s world.

According to IBM, just a slight mistake could cost businesses up to $4.88 million to recover from attacks. And that’s without mentioning the security-conscious customers you may end up losing because of data breaches. At a time when customer acquisition costs are skyrocketing, you want to strengthen your online security to avoid any customer losses.

And the more secure your platform feels, the more likely it will attract and retain many customers. It’s no wonder Ethereum-based technologies like decentralized finance (DeFi) are flooding developer spaces like Android. DeFi is a financial system built on blockchain technology, allowing direct, peer-to-peer transactions without traditional financial intermediaries like banks or brokers. As a result of its continued adoption, the DeFi market is growing significantly, with Market.us valuing it at $21.3 billion and expecting it to hit $616.1 billion by 2033.

Agreeing with this, Binance Research claims that, “Ethereum is emerging as the institutional favorite, nearly surpassing Bitcoin in ETF inflows and cementing its role as crypto’s yield-bearing backbone.” With companies craving more secure systems, more institutions will likely turn to this network as their new hope.

The Scalability Question

Assuming you were transacting on a platform during a peak season, and you experienced a lag. If the experience persists, you may turn away and even discourage your friends from using it. According to Help Scout, 13% of shoppers will tell at least 15 friends about frustrating encounters, highlighting the growing importance of effective payments.

And this is regardless of whether it’s a peak or regular season. Unfortunately, tokens like Bitcoin can’t deliver this needed scalability when transactions involve thousands of users. After all, Bitcoin can only process up to seven transactions per second. Ethereum is quite different, especially now that its updates are expected to make it even more scalable. Ethereum 2.0, for instance, could support up to 100,000 transactions per second.

This is good news for businesses seeking to dominate global markets. Customers want efficient payments and will likely become loyal if they find them. According to Testlio, offering seamless payments can be magical and increase retention rates by at least 15%. And because no one wants to lose customers, it makes sense that developers are taking advantage of Ethereum’s scalability to stay ahead.

The world today has become highly complex. You can’t survive the competition without providing customer-centric experiences. With cyberattacks becoming the norm, users want to ensure they interact in safe environments. Things are also moving fast, and no one wants processes like leasing to take ages. Since Ethereum can help meet these needs, developers have been turning to it to improve their competitiveness.
