TECNO Takes on Skin Tone Bias in Mobile Photography with a 372-Patch Color Card

TECNO has announced a major advancement in its Universal Tone technology, introducing an upgraded multi-skin tone color card featuring 372 patches. This update, combined with enhancements to the Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine, marks a significant leap in skin tone accuracy for mobile imaging. Designed to better represent a wider spectrum of skin tones across diverse ethnicities, these improvements aim to provide more natural and inclusive photography experiences for users worldwide.

Advancements in Skin Tone Representation

TECNO’s upgraded Universal Tone color card expands to 372 patches, refining its database for increased inclusivity. This comprehensive dataset now better represents users across regions such as Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. The update strengthens TECNO’s skin tone restoration algorithms, ensuring improved accuracy and consistency in skin tone capture.

At MWC Barcelona 2025, TECNO will debut two tailored versions of its enhanced color card: one focused on darker skin tones and another emphasizing lighter skin tones. The goal is to further refine mobile imaging technology, allowing for more precise calibration across diverse complexion ranges.

Regional Customization and Research Collaborations

TECNO has also developed a specialized skin tone color card for Saudi Arabia, featuring 186 region-specific skin tone patches. This initiative, created in collaboration with the University of Leeds (UK) and Dar Al-Hekma University (Saudi Arabia), reflects TECNO’s commitment to fine-tuning imaging technology to regional needs. Moving forward, the company plans to expand its local tuning capabilities through further research into skin tones, lighting conditions, and cultural imaging preferences.

Enhancing the Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine

As a core component of Universal Tone, TECNO’s Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine has been enhanced with a refined CCM Skin Tone Calibration Algorithm and a Spectrum-Based Automatic White Balance (AWB) Algorithm. These updates bring:

  • Precise color calibration through the CCM algorithm, leveraging the expanded color card for better accuracy.
  • Improved white balance and exposure adjustments with the AWB algorithm, addressing color shifts and enhancing monochromatic photo scenarios.
  • Over 50% improvement in skin tone accuracy, resulting in more natural and true-to-life portraits across varying lighting conditions.

Intelligent Exposure Adjustments for Consistent Imaging

Universal Tone’s Intelligent Skin-Tone Grading Exposure Algorithm enables precise brightness recovery across different skin tones, ensuring balanced exposure in diverse lighting environments. This improvement is particularly beneficial in challenging photography scenarios, such as high-contrast backgrounds and backlit conditions.

TECNO’s Commitment to Inclusive Imaging Technology

TECNO remains dedicated to reducing skin tone bias in mobile photography, making inclusivity a cornerstone of its imaging development strategy. With its continuously expanding skin tone database and advanced restoration algorithms, TECNO is setting a new benchmark for mobile imaging technology. As the company prepares to unveil these innovations at MWC 2025, it continues to solidify its position as a leader in AI-driven imaging advancements.
