Fairphone has introduced the Fairbuds 2, a new generation of true wireless earbuds designed to combine high-quality audio, everyday comfort, and long-term repairability. The latest release reinforces the company’s commitment to making consumer electronics more sustainable by allowing users to replace worn components instead of discarding an entire device.
The European launch coincided with International E-Waste Day on October 14, highlighting the growing need for electronics that last longer and generate less waste. In the United States, the Fairbuds 2 are scheduled to go on sale November 2, 2026.
Priced at $119 in the US, the new earbuds offer several improvements over their predecessors, including smaller dimensions, upgraded audio technology, hybrid active noise cancellation, and support for high-resolution wireless audio through LDAC. Fairphone has also retained its defining feature: a modular design that makes essential components replaceable by users.
A New Approach to Wireless Earbud Longevity
Wireless earbuds have become everyday accessories, but their limited repairability remains a major problem. Many products feature sealed housings and batteries that are difficult or impossible to replace. When battery performance declines, owners often have little choice but to purchase a new pair.
Fairphone aims to challenge this model with the Fairbuds 2. The earbuds feature seven user-replaceable components, including batteries in both the individual earbuds and the charging case. The design avoids glue, allowing owners to replace worn parts without throwing away the entire product.
This approach builds on the company’s earlier efforts to make wireless audio equipment more repairable. Rather than treating earbuds as disposable accessories, Fairphone wants consumers to keep them in use for longer.
The company also backs the Fairbuds 2 with a three-year warranty, providing additional reassurance for buyers who value durability and long-term ownership.
Improved Sound With an 11mm Bio-Cellulose Driver
Audio performance receives a substantial upgrade with the introduction of a new 11mm dynamic driver featuring an organic bio-cellulose diaphragm. The lightweight material is designed to deliver responsive sound reproduction and crisp high frequencies.
Fairphone collaborated with Rotterdam-based acoustic design studio Form Follows Frequency to tune the earbuds. The resulting sound profile aims to balance deeper bass, warm midrange tones, and clear treble for a more engaging listening experience.
The Fairbuds 2 also introduce LDAC support for the first time in Fairphone’s Fairbuds lineup. This technology allows compatible devices to transmit higher-resolution audio over Bluetooth, making it an appealing addition for listeners who want more detail from their music.
Users can further customize their listening experience through the Fairbuds companion app. Its audio tools include preset sound profiles and a five-band equalizer, giving listeners more control over how their music sounds.
Smaller Design and Improved Everyday Comfort
Fairphone has redesigned both the earbuds and the charging case to make them more compact and convenient to carry.
According to the company, the Fairbuds 2 earbuds are 37% smaller, while the charging case is 32% smaller than the previous generation. The reduced size is intended to improve portability and provide a more comfortable fit for a broader range of users.
A stronger magnetic connection helps keep the earbuds securely positioned inside the charging case. The design also incorporates improved passive noise isolation to help reduce unwanted sounds before active noise cancellation is applied.
For people who wear earbuds throughout the day, these changes could make the Fairbuds 2 more practical for commuting, working, exercising, and listening to music at home.
Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation and Clearer Calls
The Fairbuds 2 include hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC) designed to reduce distracting sounds in busy environments. Fairphone says the system can reduce noise by up to 45 decibels under suitable conditions.
The earbuds use six microphones in total, with three microphones in each earbud, to support voice pickup and call clarity. This arrangement is intended to help users communicate more clearly when taking calls in environments with background noise.
Although actual noise reduction and call quality can vary depending on the environment and fit, these features position the Fairbuds 2 as an option for commuters, remote workers, and frequent travelers.
An IP54 rating provides protection against dust and water splashes, offering additional peace of mind during everyday use. However, this rating does not mean the earbuds are waterproof or suitable for submersion.
Up to 40 Hours of Battery Life
Battery performance is another major feature of the new Fairbuds 2. Fairphone advertises up to 40 hours of total playback when combining the earbuds’ battery capacity with the charging case.
The earbuds also support quick charging, with the company stating that a 10-minute charge can provide approximately 2.5 hours of playback.
These improvements are particularly relevant for people who use wireless earbuds throughout the day and prefer not to charge them frequently.
More importantly, the batteries can be replaced when their performance deteriorates. This addresses one of the most common reasons wireless earbuds become inconvenient or unusable after extended ownership.
Bluetooth 6.0 and Multipoint Connectivity
The Fairbuds 2 support Bluetooth 6.0, bringing updated wireless connectivity and features intended to support more precise proximity sensing.
Multipoint connectivity allows users to connect the earbuds to two devices simultaneously while keeping up to six devices saved for easier switching. For example, listeners can stay connected to a computer and smartphone without repeatedly pairing the earbuds from scratch.
The earbuds also include an automatic playback feature that pauses audio when both earbuds are removed and resumes playback when they are put back in, helping make everyday listening more convenient.
Another useful addition is the earbud-finding function available through the Fairbuds app. Users can activate the earbuds’ speakers to help locate misplaced earbuds nearby.
A Redesigned Companion App
Fairphone has refreshed the Fairbuds app with a new visual identity and updated features designed to complement the new hardware.
The app includes sound presets developed for the Fairbuds 2, customizable equalizer controls, and built-in tips to help users get more from their earbuds.
Fairphone also plans app and firmware updates to maintain the user experience over time. Continued software support will be important to ensuring that the earbuds’ features remain useful throughout their intended lifespan.
More Sustainable Materials and Responsible Production
Sustainability remains central to the Fairbuds 2. Fairphone says approximately 49% of the materials used in the earbuds are fair or recycled, covering materials such as plastics, rare earth elements, tin, cobalt, copper, gold, and silver.
The company highlights several specific material improvements:
- Recycled rare earth elements are used in the speaker magnets.
- The plastic components contain more than 70% post-consumer recycled plastic.
- The solder paste uses 100% recycled tin.
- PFAS-free plastics and silicone are used in components that come into contact with the skin.
PFAS are a broad group of chemicals known for their persistence in the environment. By avoiding these substances in the specified materials, Fairphone aims to reduce reliance on chemicals associated with long-term environmental concerns.
The manufacturing process also incorporates renewable energy during assembly, according to the company.
Fairphone says the Fairbuds 2 are 100% e-waste neutral. Under this approach, the company collects and responsibly recycles an amount of electronic waste equivalent to the weight of the products sold.
The earbuds are also produced under fair-working-condition initiatives that include Fairphone’s Living Wage Bonus and Workers’ Voice programs. These efforts are intended to support better conditions for workers involved in the electronics supply chain.
Why Repairability Matters in the Earbuds Market
The launch comes as demand for wireless earbuds continues to expand. However, many products are designed primarily around performance, convenience, and replacement cycles rather than repair.
Battery degradation is a particular concern because small batteries can lose capacity after repeated charging. When a battery is permanently sealed inside an earbud, replacing the entire device may appear easier than repairing it.
Fairphone’s modular approach offers a different option. By making important components replaceable, the company aims to reduce electronic waste and extend the useful life of its products.
The Fairbuds 2 also demonstrate how sustainability and consumer convenience can work together. Buyers do not have to choose between modern features and a product designed to be repaired.
Still, the long-term environmental benefits depend on factors such as whether users actually repair their earbuds, the availability of replacement parts, and how responsibly old components are recycled.
Fairbuds 2 Price and Availability
