BMX SolidSafe 5K and Air 5K: Two Smart Approaches to Pocket-Friendly Power

BMX SolidSafe 5K and Air 5K: Two Smart Approaches to Pocket-Friendly Power

Modern phones can last through a typical day, right up until navigation, photography, gaming, video calls, or questionable signal strength start chewing through the battery. BMX’s SolidSafe 5K and SolidSafe Air 5K are designed for those moments, providing portable backup power in compact forms that work with current Android phones and iPhones.

Both models carry 5,000mAh batteries, support 15W Qi2 magnetic wireless charging, and provide up to 20W through USB-C. They cost the same $59.99, too. The decision comes down to what matters more: having extra controls and a built-in cable, or carrying the thinnest option possible.

We have taken a look at both, and each makes a strong case for becoming part of an everyday carry kit.

Semi-Solid-State Batteries are the Shared Headline

The most interesting part of the SolidSafe family sits inside the enclosure. BMX uses semi-solid-state battery cells containing less liquid electrolyte than conventional lithium-ion cells. The company says this construction is intended to lower the conditions that can lead to thermal runaway and fire.

BMX has demonstrated its cells being drilled, cut, bent, and punctured during internal testing. Those demonstrations are attention-grabbing, though they remain manufacturer tests rather than something most owners should attempt at home. The practical takeaway is that BMX has built the product line around battery safety rather than treating it as a footnote on the packaging.

Both power banks have capacities well below the typical airline limit for carry-on batteries. Their 5,000mAh size is intended for daily backup use rather than powering several devices across an entire weekend.

SolidSafe 5K Favors Information and Convenience

The standard SolidSafe 5K is the busier of the pair, but that works in its favor. A full-color LCD shows the remaining battery percentage and charging wattage, removing the usual guessing game presented by four tiny indicator lights.

It has a built-in USB-C cable that doubles as a carrying loop. That makes the SolidSafe 5K particularly useful for Android owners, recent iPhone users, and anyone trying to reduce the number of loose cables roaming around a backpack. The cable can provide up to 20W wired charging, or users can attach a compatible phone magnetically for up to 15W Qi2 charging.

At 9.7mm thick, it remains slim enough for a bag, jacket pocket, or tech pouch. It is thicker than the Air 5K, though the added depth buys features that prove useful during daily use. Knowing the exact battery level is handy, and seeing the charging wattage helps confirm that a device has made a proper connection.

The built-in cable may be the deciding factor for travelers, commuters, and people who regularly leave home with a power bank but somehow forget the cable. The SolidSafe 5K closes that particular loophole.

SolidSafe Air 5K puts portability first

The SolidSafe Air 5K strips the formula down to its most pocketable form. It measures 6.8mm thick and weighs 130 grams, making it far less noticeable when attached to a phone or carried in a pocket. BMX uses a titanium enclosure that gives the Air a cleaner, more premium feel than the typical plastic battery pack.

There is no color screen or integrated cable. This model is built around magnetic wireless charging, with USB-C available when wired charging is preferable. The reduced feature set allows the battery to sit closer to the back of the phone and feel less like a second device strapped onto it.

That difference becomes clear once the power banks are handled side by side. The regular SolidSafe 5K feels like a compact charging tool. The Air 5K feels closer to a magnetic phone accessory that happens to contain 5,000mAh of backup power.

For users who dislike the bulk of magnetic batteries, the thinner profile may matter more than a display or built-in cable. It is the model more likely to remain attached while using the phone, rather than being removed as soon as charging is finished.

Android and iPhone compatibility

Qi2 makes both models relevant beyond the iPhone crowd. Compatible Android phones with built-in Qi2 magnets can attach directly, and other Qi-capable Android devices may work with a suitable magnetic case or alignment ring. Current MagSafe-equipped iPhones can attach without an extra accessory.

Wireless output reaches up to 15W on supported Qi2 devices. Results can vary based on the phone, case, temperature, battery level, and charging controls built into the operating system. USB-C provides a more predictable 20W wired option and reduces the energy lost during wireless charging.

A 5,000mAh rating should be treated as a useful refill rather than a guaranteed full charge for every phone. Conversion losses, wireless heat, and the size of the phone’s internal battery all affect how much power reaches the device. Larger Android flagships and Pro Max iPhones may receive a substantial top-up rather than a complete recharge.

Which SolidSafe 5K makes more sense?

The standard SolidSafe 5K is the stronger all-purpose choice. Its built-in cable and detailed LCD make it better suited to travel, work bags, shared family charging, and users who want more information about what the battery is doing. It provides several small conveniences without becoming especially bulky.

The SolidSafe Air 5K is aimed at people who prioritize size and weight. It fits more naturally with a minimalist everyday carry setup and feels better attached to a phone during use. Giving up the screen and cable seems reasonable when the reward is a noticeably thinner design.

Since both cost $59.99, BMX is not asking buyers to pay extra for the titanium-bodied Air. It is presenting two versions of the same basic idea: one optimized for function and one optimized for carry.

Early impressions

The SolidSafe 5K and Air 5K occupy a useful middle ground between cheap emergency batteries and oversized power banks meant to charge everything in sight. Their 5,000mAh capacity suits daily top-ups, and Qi2 makes magnetic charging practical across a growing mix of Android phones and iPhones.

Our preference depends on the situation. The regular SolidSafe 5K is the one we would put in a travel bag, thanks to its screen and attached cable. The Air 5K is easier to imagine carrying every day, where its slim profile keeps it from becoming pocket ballast.
