Android Introduces Fake Call Detection to Combat AI-Powered Impersonation Scams

Android Introduces Fake Call Detection to Combat AI-Powered Impersonation Scams

Google is rolling out a new security feature for Android aimed at a growing threat: scammers who use spoofed phone numbers and AI-generated voices to impersonate trusted contacts. The new feature, called Fake Call Detection, is designed to identify and warn users when a caller may not actually be the person they appear to be.

The feature arrives as impersonation scams continue to rise worldwide. According to figures cited by Google, impersonation fraud contributed to more than $400 billion in global losses, with U.S. consumers reporting billions more in losses through scams involving fake identities and deceptive phone calls.

How Fake Call Detection Works

The new protection is built into Phone by Google and operates automatically in the background. When one contact calls another and both parties are using Phone by Google, the devices exchange a secure verification signal to confirm that the call is genuinely coming from the caller’s device.

Google describes the process as a digital handshake powered by end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology. The verification occurs silently and is designed to preserve user privacy.

If a scammer attempts to spoof a trusted contact’s phone number, that verification signal will be absent. The receiving device can then check whether the legitimate contact’s device is actually placing a call. If it is not, Android displays a warning advising the recipient to hang up.

The approach targets a scam tactic that has become more convincing thanks to widely available AI voice cloning tools. A fake call from “Mom” or a close friend no longer sounds like science fiction. These days, it can sound unsettlingly authentic.

Rolling Out to Android Devices This Month

Google says Fake Call Detection will begin rolling out globally this month to Android 12 and newer devices. The rollout starts with Pixel smartphones before expanding more broadly.

The feature requires Phone by Google, Google Contacts, and Google Messages, with RCS functionality enabled. Both the caller and recipient must be using Phone by Google for verification to work.

Phone by Google already serves as the default dialer on many Android devices. Users whose phones rely on a different calling app can install Phone by Google from the Google Play Store and set it as the default phone application.

Building on Google’s Existing Scam Protections

Fake Call Detection joins a growing collection of security tools across Google’s ecosystem. Existing protections include AI-powered scam detection in Google Messages, scam call detection features available on select Android devices, verified business messaging through RCS, support for Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) in Gmail, and participation in STIR/SHAKEN caller authentication initiatives.

Google says it built the new feature on top of the open RCS standard, creating an opportunity for other device makers and communication apps to adopt similar protections in the future.

More details about Android’s new Fake Call Detection feature can be found on Google’s security blog when the announcement goes live.
