Next-gen Amazon Alexa-enabled devices will be able to make phone calls, act as intercoms

0

Amazon’s Echo connected speaker proved to be surprisingly popular with consumers across the globe. To such an extent that Echo alternatives soon started popping up, the Google Home being among the most notable.

While companies like Samsung are only now entertaining the idea of a connected speaker complete with a virtual assistant, Amazon is apparently already planning new Alexa-powered devices which probably means we’re going to see a next-gen Echo speaker arrive soon enough.

According to a report coming out of Re/Code, Amazon is planning to launch new Alexa-powered devices this year. Sources claim that the new products will allow uses to place calls via voice commands. Furthermore, people will also be able to talk to others at the other end of a second Alexa-enable device through a feature that will act as an intercom system.

The report doesn’t spell out Amazon is planning a second Echo device, but chances are we’ll see a new product from this family grace the market in the upcoming months since the Echo and Echo Dot have proved to be very well received by the public.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard that Amazon might be working towards adding phone functionality to its virtual assistant-enabled products. Not so long ago, a report from the Wall Street Journal claimed that both Amazon and Google were looking to implement this feature into their next-gen products.

Amazon declined to comment, so for the time being take this info with a grain of salt.

Tiny Rails: Charming game with low commitment (Review)

Sometimes you just need an escape. A trip away to somewhere far from where you are, even if just for a few minutes. Tiny Rails offers just that, with quick bursts of gameplay in a relaxing and charming atmosphere. I was genuinely surprised at how much content was packed in this game, but just because there’s a lot of content doesn’t mean a game is going to be good. Is it worth your time to take a ride on Tiny Rails? Let’s take a look.

Developer: Tiny Titan Studios
Price: Free (In-App Purchases)
Download: Google Play/iOS

I call her “Blue Beauty”

Gameplay

You start the game off with an old train, and as you progress through you’ll discover new train cars and upgrades to improve your train and bring in income. At its core, this game is primarily about making deliveries or cargo and people. When you pull into a station, you will have the option to make purchases from the market if there’s anything available. As you browse the map you’ll see what items are needed at which stations, and making deliveries earns you some big bucks. Passengers are a little easier, as you drop people off and collect people at almost every station you come to. The downside to this is that putting in almost no effort means very low profits but for passive income, passengers can’t be beat.

There’s always this guy… He may have a different name in every game, but you know who he is.

The game also ties in a story about an evil corporation trying to take over the rails and your rag-tag band of train pioneers pulling together to create the best rail line ever. It does have a lot of cheezy dialogue and goofball characters, but each one helps you accomplish something, for example doubling profits or by keeping the tracks clear of debris. You have to use the premium currency of diamonds to activate these skills, but diamonds are surprising easy to come by through easy to reach achievements and watching videos. I’ve found myself with well over 400 diamonds, and with each skill only costing 5 diamonds for 24 hours of use, I’ll be set for a long time, not to mention I’m collecting more constantly.

Outside of setting up your train and planning your routes, there isn’t much else to do while your train is traveling. It can easily take 2-3 hours for your train to travel from station to station, but it will keep traveling while the app is closed, so you can take a few minutes to set things up, let it go, and come back later, so it’s a great game for playing on the go if you’ve only got a few minutes at a time to play.

Controls

Most of the game is navigating through menus to select what to buy, how to arrange your train, or selecting train helpers. Everything is responsive and works well. My only gripe, which has occurred many times for me, is that when you are placing new train cars you have to push a little “+” between the cars, and I usually end up hitting a car instead, selecting it and not placing the one I wanted. It’s a very minor complaint, but it comes up frequently.

Options for days

Graphics & Sound

The graphics are charmingly retro and pixelated but still high quality. Characters look highly detailed and the scenery is incredible, changing depending on what time of area you are in. I’ve seen forests, cities, country fields. There is a strong attention to detail. There is even a day and night cycle when your train will turn on lights and cabin cars will be lit up. All of this adds up to a beautiful game.

The music is peaceful and inviting, reminding me of Animal Crossing for those of you who are familiar with the Nintendo series. There train whistles and the sound of wheels racing down the tracks which continue to add to the charm of the game. The music tracks can get a little repetitive, but as a game that’s really only played for 5 minutes or so at a time, it’s nice, light, and relaxing for those short little breaks.

Longevity

There is a lot to do in this game. I’m only at the end of chapter 2, and there are at least 5 more chapters ahead of me. With each chapter consisting of multiple stops across an entire country, and unlocking of European countries after that, this game will take you a considerable amount of time to see and do everything. However, the pacing of the game is just right so that you do not feel that you will never complete an assignment or that it will take you far too long to do any one mission. Everything is paced out with short, destination based missions in between longer missions so that you are constantly working towards a goal, but you also have complete freedom to send your train anywhere you want anytime you want.

Your trains keep going even while you’re away

Conclusion

Tiny Rails is a lot of fun with a load of content. There are constant missions to accomplish and as much or as little commitment from the player as desired. There are only about 5-10 minutes of gameplay at any one time, but it’s great if you only have a few minutes between classes or checking in when on a break from work. Add some pixel graphics and relaxing music and all together it’s a great package. This is one to pick up if you love games but don’t have the time to commit to serious gaming.

LG G6 European prices get revealed

0

At MWC 2017, LG launched its next-gen LG G6 flagship during a special press event. But while the Korean tech giant detailed most of the features, we were left in the dark concerning the price in Europe and US.

Now our friends at Mobile Fun have sent us information related to the LG G6’s pricing in the UK. The LG G6 is currently available for pre-order with the online retailer for $855 (£699). The retailer also offers a wide range of compatible cases, to help safe guard your flagship.

The LG G6 also showed up with Romanian retailer Quick Mobile which lists the device with a price tag of approximately $750. The model available for pre-order features 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. So it seems that the LG G6 will be a bit more affordable in Europe.

The phone will arrive with a 5.7-inch with a 79% screen-to-body ratio and an 18:9 Full Vision display with extremely sleek bezels.

The device takes advantage of a Snapdragon 821 and can be had with variants – 4GB of RAM plus 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. The LG G6 also has a dual camera setup (made of 13MP sensors) and a selfie snapper of the 5MP variety. In the US, the LG G6 will come boasting a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC feature in order to cater to audiophiles. We’re still waiting on official pricing info.

Samsung readying more than 12 million Galaxy S8 units for launch

0

MWC 2017 didn’t feel quite the same without Samsung unveiling its next-fen Galaxy S flagship, but nevertheless there were plenty of other distractions.

The Korean tech giant wanted to make absolutely sure it gets everything right, while the Galaxy S8 is concerned and it took its sweet time preparing it. We expect the phone to make an official appearance on March 29 during a press event Samsung will be hosting in New York.

Recent leaked live image of Galaxy S8

And despite last year’s Note7 debacle, Samsung is betting big on the Galaxy S8. According to a new report coming out of Vietnamese media, the Korean behemoth is anticipating high demand for its upcoming flagship duo – the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

To this end, Samsung plans to have ready 4.7 million units of the phone in March and 7.8 million units in April. The report doesn’t break down the numbers for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

Recent leaked live image of Galaxy S8 side view

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen a lot of live images showcasing the Galaxy S8, so it makes sense to assume the phone has already entered production.

According to the information available, the company is preparing for a global launch. This means that unlike other companies (HTC for example) Samsung will make the phone available for all markets sometime in mid-April.

The Galaxy S8 is expected to make a debut in two variants featuring 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch displays. It will come with a Super AMOLED panel with 2,560 x 1,440 resolution plus a new Snapdragon 835 and 4GB of RAM under the hood.

Sorry folks, no budget Pixel 2 is coming this year

1

In January the first information related to the upcoming Pixel 2 surfaced online. We were told the successor of Google’s 2016 flagship phone will probably be waterproof and might come in a more affordable variant as well – something which probably got Nexus nostalgics quite excited.

While this information apparently came from a “reliable source”, we now need to rectify it. Google itself denied it has plans to make a budget-friendly Pixel this year.

Google’s head of hardware Rick Osterloh (ex-Motorola) talked to AndroidPit in a recent interview and revealed that the Pixel will continue to stay premium. Meaning that the same high-end price-tag will apply to the Pixel of 2017. He goes on to say that Google intends to leave other Android OEMs tackle the lower-end market (like Nokia and Motorola).

Osterloh didn’t give a specific answer when inquired about the Pixel 2’s launch date. However, the phone should probably make an appearance this fall.

A bunch of colorful pixels to remind you the Pixel 2 is coming later this year

The next Pixel will certainly come with a newer SoC, better camera and maybe even an edge-to-edge display.

In recent weeks, Google’s product lead for the Pixel, Krishna Kumar took to the Pixel User Community to poll users about the features they would like to see in the next-gen Pixel.

Most users opted for slimmer bezels, front-facing speakers and water-resistance. Users also asked Google find a way to keep up with demand better than it did last year.

Google Assistants starts rolling out to more Android phones

4

Not long ago the Google Assistant was an exclusive to the Pixel and Pixel XL phones. But Google wants to extend the availability of the virtual assistants to all phones running Android 7.0 Nougat or Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Well this week Google has started rolling out the new feature to more Android phones, so you better go ahead and check your phones to see if the feature has showed up for you yet. Google has also launched a new video to signal that the rollout has begun.

However, we’re not told which devices are getting the new features, so we ask our readers to check their phones and let us know in the comments whether or not they are seeing the Google Assistant.

Google says that for the new feature to work, users will need to have Play Services updated as well as at least 1.5GB or memory and a 720p screen. Also note that the Pixel animation won’t be available for other devices.

The new feature will be made available for users of the English speaking world first – starting with the US, Australia, Canada and the UK. Then German speakers will be treated to the Google Assistant.

At MWC 2017, Google showcased an image showing the Google Assistant on the Galaxy S7, LG V20 and HTC 10 – so we suspect these will be the first beneficiaries of the Google virtual assistant.

Don’t forget that the rollout won’t be limited to premium devices like the ones we mentioned above. The Google Assistant will land on affordable handsets like the Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Motorola Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus.

Cash me outside (review)

How “bow” a game based on a ridiculous and somewhat annoying meme? If you’re not sold on the idea, I don’t blame you. Gold Coast Apps has decided to “cash” in on the popularity of the popular “Cash me outside” quote from the girl that built her appearance on Dr. Phil into a mini-empire. Gold Coast is not afraid to quickly hop on other popular memes and pop culture references and build them into basic games. Previous entries also include ‘Damn Daniel’ and ‘Trump on the Run’.

Cashing in on simple gameplay

So how does Cash me outside play? Simple and straight forward–then paired with ridiculous sound effects from the overplayed meme. The premise is so basic it immediately brings feelings of Flappy Bird paired with Temple Run. You play as the unruly ‘Cash me outside’ girl, or some semblance of, within an ever-evolving quasi 2D/3D, blocky world.

cash me outside
Cash me outside is extremely simple in design and provides minutes of entertainment

Upon starting the game you’ll have instant access to the first level. The blocks appear in front of your character as she continually moves forward. Simply press the screen anywhere to cause her to jump between the gaps and land safely on the next floating platform. Miss a platform and poor little Danielle will fall to her unfortunate death. The game’s difficulty is high, and will cause most players to restart from the beginning over and over, in similar fashion to the infamous Flappy Bird.

As you move along in the game, Danielle will collect the cash that’s littered about the platforms. Collect enough cash, and you’ll be able to unlock new and uninspiring levels. The main, interesting point to the entire ‘Cash me outside’ game is that the levels occasionally and dynamically shift before you eyes, which is intriguing to watch, but also adds to the difficulty of the game.

Looks and sounds can be deceiving, but not here

Graphically, Cash me outside leaves a lot to be desired. We all know that great graphics don’t necessarily equate to a great game, but in this instance poor graphics are paired quite nicely with poor gameplay. Danielle herself is cartoony and looks as if she was drawn by a fifth-grader, and although the levels shift from time to time, the actual platforms are basic and blocky. It’s safe to assume this game is not licensed and I imagine that a license wouldn’t help in this instance.

Each time your character falls, you’ll hear the perfectly recreated “cash me outside” phrase from the Dr. Phil show that so many of us now know. Also after each failure, you will have about a 25% chance of being presented with a full-screen ad that will need to be dismissed in order to continue gameplay. Not surprisingly the entire experience feels like a quick cash-grab and will most likely be dismissed and forgotten by most players.

Cash-wrap

Cash me outside is ridiculous on so many levels. Is it funny and entertaining? Well maybe for some, but probably not for long for most players. I laughed the first time I tried the game, then quickly became annoyed by the repeating sound effects and repeating advertisements. This game, as it may be referred, is really what’s wrong with mobile entertainment in a multitude of ways.

13 year old Danielle in all her “cash me outside” glory is being fully exploited here

Simple, repetitive gameplay. Generic sound effects coupled with basic graphics would be given a pass if there was a little more to the game, but here they complement the poor gameplay perfectly–but not positively. It’s hard to recommend this game to anyone that doesn’t want just a quick laugh before this meme is all but forgotten within the upcoming weeks.

Chevrolet now offers unlimited LTE access for $20 per month

0

Having access to LTE in your car or truck is nothing new, but previously you would have to deal with data limits. Now, Chevrolet is doing something that hasn’t been done by anyone else, as it is now offering unlimited LTE data for just $20 per month.

According to the car manufacturer, over 4 million GB of data was used over the course of 2016. This is a huge amount of data, but nowhere near as large as the amount of data provided by each carrier in the US. In fact, Chevy is reporting a 200% increase on LTE data usage in their vehicles when compared to 2015.

Through OnStar and AT&T, Chevrolet was able to pull off this feat, however there’s a bit of a question looming. Is this true unlimited data, or is this “unlimited data”?

We’ve seen Verizon and AT&T reintroduce unlimited LTE plans, however those plans are capped at 22GB. Once that threshold is met, your speeds are slowed to 3G, making it next to impossible to really use your smartphone.

This new plan from Chevrolet, OnStar, and AT&T is set to kick off starting tomorrow, March 3rd. So let us know if you’ll be taking advantage of this, or if this will play a role in your decision-making for your next car.
