Gemini Arrives for Wear OS Smartwatches, Bringing Google’s AI to Your Wrist

0

Google’s Gemini AI assistant is officially arriving on Wear OS smartwatches, with the rollout beginning today for devices from Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and others running Wear OS 4 or newer. The update brings Gemini’s conversational smarts directly to the wrist, offering users a faster, more natural way to interact with their devices without reaching for a phone.

Smarter Conversations, Less Fuss

Gemini on Wear OS builds on the same AI backbone that powers the experience on Android phones, delivering quick, helpful responses to voice commands. Whether users are wrist-deep in dinner prep or hustling to their next meeting, Gemini aims to provide context-aware assistance on the go.

Need to know how long to roast veggies? Just ask. Wondering if rain’s on the radar before a dog walk? Gemini’s got that covered too. Users can activate Gemini by saying “Hey Google,” pressing and holding the side button, or tapping the Gemini app icon on their smartwatch.

Do More With Less Tapping

Gemini’s integration with Google services like Gmail and Calendar allows users to streamline everyday tasks using simple voice prompts. It can draft and send messages mid-jog, summarize recent emails, add events to calendars, or provide navigation details for upcoming appointments.

For those juggling errands or workouts, Gemini brings new flexibility, like creating a custom running playlist or setting reminders, by handling requests that typically involve multiple apps or steps.

Memory on Demand

One standout feature is Gemini’s ability to remember quick personal notes. Users can instruct the assistant to remember things like a locker number, parking spot, or even trigger grocery reminders later in the day. It’s like having a sticky note system with built-in AI.

To get the most out of Gemini, users should check the permissions in the Gemini app settings on their phone to allow access to services like Calendar, Gmail, and more.

Coming to a Watch Near You

Gemini is rolling out gradually to Wear OS 4+ smartwatches starting today. Devices that update to Wear OS 6 in the future will benefit from deeper integrations, including support for watchmaker-specific apps.

More details and examples of what Gemini can do on your watch can be found on Google’s official blog post.

Google Expands Circle to Search With New AI Mode and Mobile Gaming Help

0

Google is rolling out major updates to its Circle to Search feature, bringing deeper AI functionality and a new gaming assistant mode to Android devices. The tools are designed to deliver more relevant information on the spot, without ever switching apps.

AI Mode Comes to Circle to Search

Circle to Search now supports Google’s AI Mode, previously only available in select contexts. This update lets users explore complex questions more naturally, with follow-up queries and expanded answers powered by Gemini, Google’s most advanced AI models.

Accessing AI Mode is simple: long press the home button or navigation bar, circle or tap on any element on screen, and when an AI-generated Overview appears, scroll down and tap “dive deeper with AI Mode.” This adds conversational context and reasoning to search results, helping users unravel detailed topics like historical events, technical processes, or science concepts, all from within the current app.

AI Mode is available through Circle to Search and Google Lens via the Google app, on both Android and iOS, in the U.S. and India.

Gaming Help Without the Pause Button

Google is also introducing in-game support for Circle to Search. Android users can now highlight on-screen elements during mobile gameplay to receive an AI Overview, complete with relevant video content and strategy tips. Whether you’re trying to figure out who that mysterious character is or how to beat the next level, the help comes to you without interrupting your session.

The feature is live in regions where AI Overviews are supported, continuing Google’s push to blend utility and convenience directly into user experiences.

More Visual, More Digestible AI Overviews

Improvements to AI Overviews aim to make responses easier to scan and understand. Backed by the latest Gemini updates, AI Overviews now include richer visuals and better organization of key information. Expect clearer summaries and more context layered directly into results which will be useful whether you’re looking up a concept, identifying a product, or troubleshooting an issue.

Available on Over 300 Million Devices

With these updates, Circle to Search has reached more than 300 million Android devices globally. It’s not just a search feature anymore. Rather, it’s becoming a hands-on, always-there assistant for navigating the content in front of you, whether that’s a dense block of text, a product photo, or your latest gaming obsession.

More details are available on the official Google Search blog.

OnePlus Watch 3 is Back, Just Smaller

Earlier this year, OnePlus announced its latest addition to the Wear OS family with the Watch 3. This new watch immediately impressed as on the best options for Android users. One of the few negatives is that some users with smaller wrists found the 46mm size to be a bit cumbersome.

The company has a history of taking feedback to heart and that results in this review of the new Watch 3…43mm edition.

Design

The design here is simple. Take the fantastic hardware of the previous Watch 3 and shrink it. That’s pretty much the deal. You have the same stainless steel construction with the digital crown and single button to the right side. The biggest alteration is the overall 43mm size and smaller screen.

It’s also thinner and lighter, lending to a more nimble feel on the wrist. The strap size is slimmed as well, from 22mm to a svelte 18mm option. This makes the new, smaller Watch 3 feel even tinier on the wrist. It really rounds out the profile of the 43mm Watch 3 to look smaller than it is while wearing. You can tell that OnePlus thought about how this is most likely going to be worn by smaller people.

“The new 43mm OnePlus Watch 3 delivers the same outstanding battery life and robust health tracking of its larger sibling, now in a perfectly sized, more nimble form factor.”

Internals and Sensors

All this stays the same as the Watch 3 big edition. You get the dual processing engine of the Snapdragon W5 for all things Wear OS, while the BES2800 handles all the minimal tasks and background pings. This efficient combination makes for one of the most well-rounded experiences you’ll find on Google’s wearable foundation.

While the OnePlus Watch 3 43mm is one of the best looking smartwatches you’ll find, OnePlus has packed a ton of health sensors into this packaging. You have all the normal fitness options you’d expect like optical heart rate, pulse, temperature, GPS, and barometer. This smartwatch is built for tracking your health and fitness.

Daily Use and Wear OS

All this means nothing if these readings and processing power don’t come through for you in real time. Happily, this isn’t an issue. Just as with its sibling, the new Watch 3 excelled in daily wear using Wear OS and in the gym for me.

Wear OS is snappy and sips power when not in use behind the BES2800. I’ve been critical in the past of Android-based watches, but a few days with the OnePlus models will truly make you reconsider if you’ve felt the same over the years. I also had forgotten how satisfying using the digital crown to scroll through the interface is to use. Bringing this back on these two models is a giant plus for OnePlus.

Fitness and health have also seen huge improvements. We covered most of this in the main OnePlus Watch 3 review, and all that still holds up with the 43mm variant. The new 60-second check-in, GPS tracking, and daily health features are all still here and accurate. OnePlus can easily hold its ground in metrics tracking to the gold standards of Garmin and Fitbit with the Watch 3.

The OHealth app continues to improve as well. The layout is intuitive with all the major categories you’d expect like workout history, step counts, calories burned, and women’s menstrual tracking. I like that it also focuses on stress levels, and the 60-second check-in is a nice feature of a quick snapshot of your current vitals that I haven’t really seen from the competition.

I would like to see OHealth add some better insights and possibly a “ready to train” or “body battery” to those that work out multiple times a week. Having a small trigger to tell you to rest, or even go a little harder on a light week, is a feature you often see in the space. It’s a small addition, but overall really impresses on the progression of the OHealth app.

Battery Life

The most impressive feature of the first OnePlus Watch 3 was the five-day battery life. When competitors like the Apple and Pixel Watches are advertising basically 24 hours, this life reliefs OnePlus users of such a burden. It also allows you to properly use features like sleep tracking with no reservations. The smaller size of the 43mm Watch 3 does take a toll on endurance, it’s not by much.

I’ve been getting around three days of usage per charge on the Watch 3 43mm edition. Depending on specifically how much I use GPS when logging walks or runs, it might be a little less on those days. This is still more than respectable and thanks to the fast charging puck, you can easily curb any battery anxiety with a few minutes while in the shower.

Final Thoughts

OnePlus has been on a grind that deserves more praise since late 2024. The OnePlus Watch 3 43mm edition shows that they have their ear to the loyal consumers of their brand. The company is slowly filling the voids in its lineup to make sure there’s a device for everyone. The new Watch 3 offers the same build, outstanding battery life, and growing health tracking in a smaller form factor.

What are you waiting on? Head to OnePlus now to get your small Watch 3. It’s available in two colors: Black Steel and Silver Steel. If the larger 46mm edition is too large, it’s a no-brainer at $299. Just buy it. If you act between July 8 through July 31, then US buyers will get $50 off when trading in any eligible device in any condition.

Garmin Adds Official Google Maps to IQ Store

0

As an avid Garmin user, I’m happy to report this surprising news. Garmin and Google have teamed up a few times recently, and are back again with the announcement that you can now install Google Maps onto your certain Garmin smartwatches. Starting July 8th, the company is supporting the new companion app for “select” Forerunners, Venu, vivoactive, and fenix watches.

Garmin explains some of the thought process and actions here:

For those who prefer to walk to their destination, Google Maps provides on-the-go directions that gently vibrate their Garmin smartwatch to keep users from having to look down at their phones while crossing the street or maneuvering through a crowd. And for even greater awareness, simply tap into the app to see the next three turns.

Users can still record walks, runs or bike rides on their Garmin smartwatch while using Google Maps, allowing them to track distance, heart rate and more, while also getting notified when it’s time to make a turn along the route. Once they arrive at their destination, users can sync their activity data from Garmin Connect to other Android health and fitness apps via Health Connect, providing them with more tools and flexibility than ever before.

There’s no real details on which devices make the cut and which don’t in the models mentioned, but I was happy to be able to install on my budget Garmin Forerunner 165. This makes me feel like most recent watches from the last few years will most likely have compatibility. It’s also worth mentioning that this is just a companion app to the existing one on your smartphone. You will need to input destinations and map criteria into Google Maps for iOS or Android first, and then the Garmin Google Maps app mirrors your guided navigation on your wrist.

The Google Maps app is available now in the Connect IQ Store and is free to download.

TCL is pushing home security into sci-fi territory with its newly announced D2 Series Smart Locks. The flagship model, the TCL D2 Pro, introduces a biometric twist that might make traditional keys feel downright ancient. Instead of relying on fingerprints or codes, the D2 Pro uses AI-powered palm vein recognition to grant access, no smudged screens or forgotten PINs involved.

The TCL D2 Pro Palm Vein Smart Lock features a hand with palm vein recognition technology. Text highlights include 'Wave to Unlock', 'Palm Vein Unlock', '99.99% Accuracy', and '0.3s Recognition'.

At the core of the D2 Pro is its palm vein scanning technology, promising 99.9999% accuracy and a near-instant unlock time of just 0.3 seconds. Unlike traditional biometrics, it’s designed to work regardless of moisture, dirt, or aging hands. TCL claims the system continuously learns and adapts to your palm’s unique patterns over time, cutting down on false rejections.

Beyond speed and precision, the lock keeps biometric data local. That means no cloud storage, no outside access. Just your hand and your door, securely linked. For those who take privacy seriously, this kind of edge computing is a welcome shift.

Smart Features, No Strings Attached

The D2 Pro runs on a 10,000mAh battery that TCL says can last over 240 days on a single charge. It also connects to the TCL Home app, which sends real-time alerts and gives users full remote control for managing passcodes, lock history, and permissions, ideal for households, Airbnb hosts, or those who like to know who’s at the door before it knocks.

More Options: D2 Plus and D2

The lineup doesn’t stop with the D2 Pro. TCL’s D2 Series also includes two more models:

Each model is designed to meet different needs and budgets, giving users a scalable approach to smart home entry.
