Samsung Galaxy S9 rumored to come sans the 3.5mm headphone jack

0

With four months to go before the Mobile World Congress 2018 – where we would normally expect Samsung to unveil its next-gen flagship – the first Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus rumors have started making their way online.

Case in point, tech website TechDroider apparently got a hold of a couple of sketches detailing some of the specifications of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. According to the leak, next year Samsung is going to introduce models with 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch displays respectively.

Most likely in response to Apple’s Face ID, Samsung is allegedly working on a more secure facial recognition system which will include 3D sensing tech. On top of that, we’re told that Samsung is still hard at work trying to crack the fingerprint scanner underneath the phone’s display problem, but is reportedly still experiencing issues on the matter.

Another noteworthy detail is that Samsung will apparently be removing the 3.5mm headphone jack from the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus next year. Not exactly good news here.

A sleek Galaxy S9 concept

Furthermore, it appears Samsung’s next flagships will get the same telephoto lens of the Galaxy Note 8. So if the information is to be believed, the Galaxy S family will get a dual-camera upgrade (16-megapixel+12-megapixel according to the leak) in 2018.

The sketches also reveal the two phones will boast a similar design to this year’s models but note that the bottom bezel has been shrunken considerably.

Anyway, we can’t vouch for the authenticity of this leak, so you best take this info with a grain of salt until more information becomes available.

The panda Pixel 2 XL is now shipping from Google

0

Those who had ordered the black Google Pixel 2 XL saw their units ship first, but those who opted for the white/black Pixel had to wait for their panda Pixel 2 XL to ship.

It seems that the wait wasn’t as long as originally suspected and around just over a week since the black Pixel 2 XL’s shipped, the panda colored ones are following suit.

If you were one of the first who ordered the panda Pixel 2 XL then you may have already gotten a shipping number while those who ordered black devices and paid for overnight shipping already have been delivered.

While there is bright news for most, some orders are mysteriously getting delayed. A few reports from around the web state that their units still haven’t shipped and are way beyond the target date. Google says that all pixel units are delayed but that’s clearly not true so raises the question as to what’s up with these particular orders. It seems Google support doesn’t have a consistent answer, but if you’re yet to see your Pixel order progress, it may be worth a quick chat with Google Support.

Red obsession: Take a look at these stunning fiery smartphones

0

The supply of smartphones is never-ending, as hundreds of new smartphones are announced every year. But the majority of these handsets are usually offered in drab black or gray colors. Throw a white version here and there and you’re done!

Fortunately, some device manufacturers like to experiment with colors and seldom produce unique looking models. And since the holiday season is coming right up, we thought you might want to gift yourself or a loved one with a unique looking smartphone. Red is also the color of Christmas, so a fiery handset might make for the perfect gift. We know there are still two months to go before Santa arrives, but it never hurts to start planning early. That’s how you’ll ensure you’ll be able to deliver the right gifts.

So check out some of the hottest red phones right now:

HTC U11

The HTC U11 in Solar Red is an exquisite looking smartphone, although quite prone to smudging. The flagship boasts some seriously capable specs including a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and also takes advantage of a high-rated main singular camera.

As a bonus it includes the quirky pressure sensitive frame Sense Edge which lets you squeeze the smartphone to trigger a pre-set action. The phone is available for $649 or for $28/month for 24 months with HTC Financing.

ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro

For the selfie enthusiasts, the ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro is an interesting proposal. The device takes advantage of a 5.5-inch display with fullHD resolution and a Snapdragon 625 aided by 3/4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

It includes a primary 16-megapixel camera with EIS, phase detection autofocus, and dual-LED flash, while on the front it takes advantage of a dual 12-megapixel+8-megapixel camera setup for gorgeous selfies.

The phone should retail $379, but it has yet to launch on the US market. Hopefully, it is coming soon.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium

In recent days Sony announced the Xperia XZ Premium is getting a new color option dubbed “Rosso” which means Red in Italian.

At launch, the phone will be available in Japan and Malaysia, but a quick look at Sony’s global website reveals this particular color version has been added to the list of available colors. So maybe there’s a chance the phone will make it in select Western markets too.

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a high-end phone which boasts a 4K display, Snapdragon 835 processor and a tremendous 19-megapixel camera capable of shooting ultra-slow-motion video footage at 960 fps. The phone is offered for $649.99 a pop.

Xioami Mi 5X

Want a red phone on the cheap? Xiaomi just unveiled a Red version of the Mi 5X (which served as the blueprint for the Xiaomi’s first Android One phone).

The device comes equipped with a 5.5-inch display with fullHD resolution, a Snapdragon 625, as well as 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It offers the services of a primary dual-camera setup which pairs two 12-megapixel sensors with f/2.2 and f/2.6 respectively, as well as phase detection autofocus, 2x optical zoom, and dual-LED flash.

The device ships out with MIUI instead stock Android and will be sold for approximately $226, but unfortunately, it’s a China-exclusive device.

Ulefone Gemini Pro

The Ulefone Gemini Pro is another affordable Chinese Red phone. It rocks the same 5.5-inch display with fullHD resolution like the Xiaomi Mi 5X but relies on a MediaTek Helio X20 instead. It bundles 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage, as well as a primary dual 13-megapixel camera. You can grab it from Gearbest for around $300.

UMIDIGI S2

Crave a red phone with an 18:9 aspect ratio? UMIDIGI has your back. Just check out the sleek S2. The phone comes with a 6-inch bezel-less display and takes advantage of a Mediatek Helio P20 chipset to keep things flowing on board.

Customers can purchase it with a 4GB of RAM + 64GB of storage configuration, but UMIDIGI also offers a version with 6GB of RAM + 128GB storage which is marketed as the S2 Pro. The phone is currently available for $199 (for a limited time) from web stores like Geabest.

Elephone S8

This phone is probably coming soon, as an image showing a Red version of the Elephone S8 leaked out a few months ago.

The device takes advantage of a 6-inch display with a QHD resolution and includes a MediaTek Helio X25 chipset, alongside 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Online stores like Gearbest currently offer the Black and Blue version, but the Red model doesn’t seem to be available yet.

Ranked: The Amazon Prime Exclusive phone deals available today

0

As some of you know Amazon offers its Prime customers exclusive deals on smartphones as part of its membership benefits. First introduced in the summer of 2016, the program has evolved to where there are currently more than one dozen models to choose from.

Today finds Amazon selling discounted devices from a variety of manufacturers including Motorola, Nokia, Alcatel, and LG. In the past we’ve also seen Blu listed among the brands with prices that start as low as $49.99.

The phones sold via Amazon Prime Exclusives are unlocked and include discounts of approximately $50 off their normal retail price. For some devices you’ll save a little less, whereas others come with much steeper discounts.

Once you have the phone you can select which carrier you want for service. While a lot of them are strictly GSM-based and work with AT&T, T-Mobile, and their respective prepaid brands, others can be paired with CDMA networks like Verizon and Sprint.

What is the Difference?

So what’s the catch with an Amazon Prime Exclusive phone? Why would it be that much cheaper over going directly through the handset maker? Personalized ads. Indeed, these phones feature an ever-so-slightly changed UI which offers ads on the lock screen and occasionally through notifications.

In essence, Amazon will subsidize some of the cost of a phone just so long as you let them advertise to you. Rather than just throwing anything and everything at you, the ads will slowly learn your habits and Amazon-based tendencies. Over time they should come to be more in line with what you would want to buy or check out.

If you are an Amazon Prime subscriber and are considering a new phone, you should probably think about purchasing through the program. That is, of course, if the phone speaks to you and fits your need.

We’ve gathered up the current crop of Amazon Prime Exclusive phones and ranked them in order of value. Among the criteria we used to judge these are overall hardware and performance, network compatibility, and discount over standard pricing.

Do note that just because one ranks higher over another doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least consider other options. We’ve tried to pick out the best overall devices for their respective money.

Everyone has different needs, brand affinity, and budgets to work with. Consider this a solid framework to start, but don’t solely base your purchasing decision from it.

LG G6+

Taking the top spot is the recently introduced LG G6+, a full-on monster of a smartphone. Powered by Android 7.0 Nougat, it’s compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon bands.

The processor is a generation back at Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, but the 4GB RAM and capacious 128GB of storage space ensure there’s plenty of performance and room for your files.

The G6+ offers up a 5.7-inch display at 18:9 ratio while the 3,300mAh battery (with wireless charging) keeps things running for the long term.

Perhaps best of all, the phone is IP68 rated to protect against dust and water resistance and the MIL-STD-810G certification means it will take a beating.

Motorola Moto X4

When it comes to bang for the buck, it’s damn near impossible to top the Moto X4 (READ OUR REVIEW). Motorola took a year off for its X line but it returned with a vengeance. Not only is it sexier than before, but it’s powerful. Oh, and it runs a lean and clean version of Android, too.

Compatible with all four of the big wireless carriers, this waterproof phone features Amazon Alexa’s hands free technology. With a 5.2-inch display and a pair of great cameras (12-megapixel/8-megapixel) on the back, it’s more than enough to get your jobs done. It’ll even have leftover resources to get your game on as well.

Alcatel Idol 5S

Unlocked for any of the major service providers, you can take the Idol 5S to and from carriers as you see fit. Powered by Android 7.1 Nougat, you’ll get a pretty strong punch from the hardware.

The phone draws strength from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. The rear camera is 12-megapixel while the front gives selfie lovers an 8-megapixel sensor with video stabilization.

Nokia 6

Yes, it’s that Nokia. It has been some time since we bothered to look in their but we’re fond of this particular package.

Unlocked for GSM carriers AT&T and T-Mobile, it’s a solid mid-range device that punches a little above its weight yet the price tag caters to more budget friendly buyers.

Running Android 7.1 Nougat, the Nokia 6 has a 5.5-inch full HD display with 2.5D curved glass. Internals include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 3GB RAM, and 32GB storage, with a microSD expansion card slot. The rear serves up a 16-megapixel shooter with an 8-megapixel camera around front.

Motorola E4

While it’s certainly not among the most powerful phones on this, it’s one of the best bargains for the money. It’s compatible with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, and their respective prepaid brands, something that few on this list can claim.

As one of the best “band aid” phones you can get, it can be had for $100 and no commitments whatsoever. The 5-inch HD display is sharp and water repellent and the 8-megapixel/5-megapixel camera combo serves most needs. Don’t push it too hard, though, as the internal hardware is about the minimum of what you can get away with.

UMIDIGI prepping an affordable Android iPhone X clone

0

Over the years, China acquired an image of being a copycat in technology, creating knock-off products of iconic devices produced in the US or elsewhere. But this image is quickly disappearing.

Not so fast, says UMIDIGI, which according to a leaked image and video is gearing up to launch a new phone called the Z2. A successor of the UMIDIGI Z1 and UMIDIGI Z1 Pro, the phone seems to be a blatant copy of Apple’s supper high-end iPhone X. But obviously, you should expect it to run Android and sell for a very affordable price tag (compared to the super pricey iPhone X).

As hinted by the leaked materials, the almost completely bezel-less UMIDIGI Z2 will apparently also take advantage of a screen-embedded fingerprint sensor. Take that, Samsung! It also seems the phone will feature a dual-camera setup on the front.

Apart from that, there isn’t much additional info to share about this upcoming device, but more details will probably be made available in the upcoming weeks/months. However, we expect it to boast pretty high-end specs.

The UMIDIGI Z1 Pro launched with a 5.5-inch fullHD display, a 2.3GHz MediaTek P20 processor, aided by 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, as well a primary dual-camera setup and a hefty 4,000 mAh battery. The device is currently available for $299.99.

Instagram gets you ready for Halloween with new Superzoom feature, stickers, and filters

0

Halloween is just around the corner, and Instagram wants to make sure you can celebrate by posting a bunch of appropriately-themed images/videos.

So the Facebook-owned app unveiled a new tool called Superzoom, which aims to help users create a dramatic effect. As the name indicates, the feature allows you to create extreme close-ups short clips using creepy sound effects. You can find the Superzoom option right next to Boomerang.

On top of that, Instagram has also announced a series of Halloween face filters that can turn you into a zombie, blood-thirsty vampire, ghost and more. You’ll be able to take advantage of them until November 1st.

Halloween stickers are also available for those who want to decorate their pictures and videos with pumpkins, zombie hands and other holiday-themed decorations.

In order to be able to access Superzoom and the new stickers and filters, you need to have the latest Instagram version 20 installed on your device.

In recent days, the photo and video app announced a new feature is available in Stories which allows you to make a live Story with a friend. Stories is one of the most popular features ever introduced by Instagram, and the company wants to keep it that way by keeping users interested.

Google trying to alleviate burn-in fears by offering 2-year warranties for Pixel 2s

0

The Google Pixel 2 XL just launched the past week, but over the weekend reports begun to surface that the device’s OLED display was already showing signs of severe burn-in. Theoretically, all OLED panels have the risk of developing screen burn-in, but that usually happens after a screen displays the same image over a prolonged period of time. But the Pixel 2 XL has developed the issues only after a few days after launch.

On top of that, additional reports that the Pixel 2 XL’s display is not as vibrant as other phones have also been popping up. In the wake of these complaints, Google was said to be actively investigating these issue. Now the Mountain View-based company released an update on the situation.

Speaking about the screen burn-in problem, Google basically calls it a non-issue. Referring to it as “differential aging” Google says the problem is in line with that of other premium smartphones and that it should not affect the normal, day-to-day user experience. However, to alleviate concerns, Google promises future software updates to optimize user experience and maximize the life of the OLED display.

For those who are unhappy with the sRGB color gamut on their phones, the search giant says it will release a new update to add a new mode for more saturated colors to the Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 2. In a bid to explain its decision of going with a narrower color gamut by default, Google invites users to do some further reading on the engineering behind the Pixel 2 XL’s P-OLED display in close conjunction with Android 8.0 Oreo.

Google also said that in order “to give users peace of mind”, all Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL units will now come with a 2-year warranty worldwide. Which is great news, especially for US customers, as in the country, most phones usually come with 1-year warranty. LG also offers an additional year of warranty for free with the purchase of its flagship phones.

OnePlus 5T vs OnePlus 5: here are 6 differences we expect to see

0

OnePlus seems to be gearing up for the release of the next device in its T range. Last year, the company pushed out the OnePlus 3T only four months after announcing the OnePlus 3 and if we are to believe recent leaks, the same scenario is going to repeat itself in 2017.

The Chinese smartphone maker rolled out the OnePlus 5 in June, which is already sold out on the company official website. This fueled speculation that the company is prepping to unveil the OnePlus 5T in the upcoming weeks. Some leaked images also showed up which gave the public a preliminary look into what’s coming next.

So what improvements will the OnePlus 5T bring over the OnePlus 5? Here are six features we expect to see on the new phone based on leaks and rumors so far:

New design

A lot of customers were disappointed when the OnePlus 5 arrived featuring a standard design with prominent bezels. Well, the biggest difference between the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T – we expect – is that the latter will make the transition to modernism in terms of design aesthetics.

Yes, the OnePlus 5T will probably come with a larger 6-inch a bezel-less display with 18:9 aspect ratio, which will allow it to compete for head to head with flagships such as the LG V30 or Pixel 2 XL.

A few alleged images of the OnePlus 5T leaked online showing us what to expect. What’s more, it is believed the phone could use the Vivo X20 or OPPO F5 as a design reference. Which isn’t surprising. In fact, the OnePlus 5 looks almost identical to the OPPO R11. And given that OnePlus, Vivo and OPPO are all part of BBK Electronics Corporation, this scenario is not far-fetched, at all.

Goodbye physical home button

The Vivo X20

Don’t like physical buttons? Then you’re going to love the OnePlus 5T. Samsung ditched the home button when it started incorporating the InfinityDisplay into its flagships and now its OnePlus’ turn to the same. The two capacitive buttons for “back” and “most recent apps” will probably also be removed. Say hi to virtual, on-screen buttons instead!

Fingerprint scanner changes location

The OPPO F5 or OnePlus 5T?

Since there will be no physical home button in front, the fingerprint scanner will most likely be moved to live on the back of the OnePlus 5T. While some people prefer to have the scanner in front, most of the today’s flagships including the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG V30 and Google Pixel 2 have it incorporated on the rear.

Bigger battery

We don’t have any actual info on this one – leaked or otherwise, but last year the OnePlus 3T launched with a bigger 3,400 mAh battery than its predecessor which relied on a 3,000 mAh powerhouse. So we can assume, the OnePlus 5T will also benefit from a larger battery pack.

Android 8.0 Oreo

According to a leaked AnTuTu screenshot listing, the OnePlus 5T will launch with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. The OnePlus 5 runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, but the producing company plans to upgrade it in the upcoming months.

Higher price

Last year, the OnePlus 3T launched with a slightly bigger price tag. So we assume the OnePlus 5T will too. The base OnePlus 5 model was offered for $479, so maybe the OnePlus 5T will retail starting at $500?

Google Home can now Cast HBO and CBS Shows

0

Google has expanded the ability Google Home got last week of being able to send YouTube to a TV nearby to now include HBO Now and CBS.

You can now instruct Google Home to start playing shows from HBO, CBS, or The CW on a nearby Chromecast or Android TV. Simply say “Play Breaking Bad” and specify what device to play it on and so it shall be done. The functionality works with Netflix too.

Just start by saying, “Ok Google” or “Hey Google”:

  • “Watch Curb Your Enthusiasm”
  • “Play Star Trek: Discovery”
  • “Turn the volume down”
  • “Go back 30 seconds”
  • “Play Riverdale”

To get setup, head into the Google Home app, swipe out the side menu and tap on “More settings.” From there, scroll to the very bottom “Videos and Photos” section and tap it. Inside this menu, you’ll be able to link accounts for casting.

It’s great to see functionality extending to make Google Home more useful and the need for remotes and navigating tedious menus a thing of the past.

Give it a try and let us know how well it works for you in the comments below.
