Leagoo KIICAA MIX: a bezel-less smartphone for the budget-minded (Review)

0

We’ve seen some intriguing smartphone innovations for the past year, but if there’s one product that attracted the attention of customers from across the globe, it would be the original Xioami Mi MIX. The 6.4-inch phablet is basically responsible for starting the bezel-less trend which you see today spread across most Android OEMs.

Since the Mi MIX was launched, we’ve seen more and more smartphone makers thinning down bezels and maximizing the screen to body ratio. From premium models like the Samsung Galaxy S8, Essential Phone or LG G6 to extremely affordable models hailing from China, customers today have a wide range of choice if they want to go bezel-less.

After Xiaomi’s Mi MIX made a debut into the world, Chinese brands flocked to offer much cheaper alternatives, on which they also stamped the MIX moniker. It’s the case of the Leagoo KIICAA MIX, one of the cheapest bezel-less phones on the market today. In what follows we’re going to be taking a more in-depth look at this Xiaomi Mi MIX lookalike to see whether it’s worthy of attention or not.

Design and display

If, like me, you’ve gotten used to more compact smartphones, the Leagoo KIICAA MIX will feel a bit strange in hand. It’s a 5.5-inch handset in a body that has the height of a 5-incher but is a lot wider. As a result, the phone it’s a lot harder to maneuver in one hand, especially if you have smaller hands.

The front of the KIICA MIX is quite similar to the Xiaomi Mi MIX, although the bezels haven’t been shrunken down as much as in the case of other, more expensive phones currently available on the market. Nevertheless, you’ll get a phone with pretty slim upper, left and right bezels.

In contrast, the bottom one is pretty prominent as it also houses the physical home button which doubles as a fingerprint scanner. The multi-purpose button supports swipe gestures – swipe left for recent apps or swipe right for back. The scanner was usually quick to respond, although at times I had to try and authenticate more than once. Above the home button you’ll notice the on-screen navigation buttons, which can be hidden if preferred.

The back of the phone is made of sturdy plastic and houses the dual camera setup. Unfortunately, it’s quite prone to smudging, but Leagoo includes a clear protective case in the retail box, so that takes care of the problem (although that one gets pretty dirty pretty fast).

On the right side of the phone, we have the power button and volume rocker, while on the left lives the dual SIM hybrid slot (which also welcomes a microSD card slot). At the bottom of the device, there are two speaker grills which aren’t that loud and a USB Type-C port. While on most phones the earpiece is included in the front, Leagoo has moved it on the top of the phone in order to give the phone the bezel-less makeover. Turns out, this was a really bad decision.

Making calls has proven to be extremely frustrating, as you can barely hear what the other person is saying on the other end. Even if smartphones now come with myriad additional functionalities, their main function is still to place phone calls. So getting a phone that can’t properly do that, kind of defeats its purpose, doesn’t it? What’s more, the phone does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. It does ship with a pair of Type-C earphones in the box, but there’s no 3.5mm to Type-C connector included as well.

On the bright side of things, for a $110 device, the Leagoo KIICAA MIX impresses with its 5.5-inch IPS Sharp-made display which offers fullHD resolution and 400ppi. The brightness levels are satisfactory and outdoor visibility quite decent.  And at this price, you won’t be able to find a better display.

Performance

Don’t expect to find a Snapdragon 835 processor running the show on board of this phone. Nevertheless, the wallet-friendly KIICAA MIX is kept alive by a decent octa-core MediaTek 6750T processor clocked at 1.5GHz with Mali T860 GPU. The SoC is aided by a hefty 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage – a configuration which is often seen in upper middle-rangers.

With this processor on board, the KIICAA MIX runs pretty smooth. It can handle most of the tasks I’ve thrown at it including web browsing, social media, taking photos most of the day and playing games – although in the latter scenario the phone did get quite warm and started getting a bit sluggish. With prolonged use, some apps did freeze at times, but you can’t expect a budget handset to run absolutely flawlessly.

Photography

The Leagoo KIICAA MIX also follows the current trends in smartphone photography, so it includes a dual-camera setup on the back which pairs a 13-megapixel sensor with a 2-megapixel one. The much sought-after bokeh effect that focuses on the subject while blurring the background is available, although be warned that the focus is quite slow. Oh and you can manually play with ISO, although the results aren’t always great!

Colors tend to be a little dull, and in situations with lots of sunlight pictures will come out looking overexposed. The main camera can’t really handle movement, as there’s no optical image stabilization on board, so you’ll need to have a steady hand while shooting. Yet some shots came out looking pretty nice (as you’ll see in the gallery).

In dark scenarios, some results were better than expected, although expect to see a fair share of noise in them.

When it comes to selfies, the secondary camera has been awkwardly moved on the lower bezel which made it really hard to use. I found it easier to flip the phone upside down and use it in this position. Despite relying on a 13-megapixel sensor, the selfie snapper delivered pretty grainy self-portraits.

Software

The Leagoo KIICAA MIX runs on the company’s own FreeMe OS which is based on Android 7.0 Nougat. But while the overall UI performance is quite decent, it’s pretty different from vanilla Android. Some Chinese OEMs have been gravitating towards stock, but not Leagoo. On the KIICA MIX, you’ll get a customized launcher, which might not be to everyone’s taste. Moreover, there’s no app drawer. This launcher won’t probably be to your liking, but the good news is that this is an Android phone which means you can quickly head on to the Play Store and download the Google Now Launcher or whatever you prefer and bam! you’re in a familiar place. Oh, and by the way, Leagoo also offers access to its own App Store.

*Sidenote: A weird thing I experienced while using the Leagoo KIICAA MIX is random ads playing out of the blue even as the phone was off. I don’t believe the phenomenon was related to any additional apps I installed, but it was extremely annoying. At night, I had to turn off the phone to avoid being awakened by some guy who wanted to sell me pizza at 2:00 AM.

Battery

Leagoo KIICAA MIX relies on a 3,000 mAh battery which lasts about a day of moderate use without breaking a sweat. I took the phone out on a photo expedition which lasted for about half a day. When I returned home, I still had more than 40% left.

But on most days when I would browse, play a few games, respond to messages on social media and place few calls, I would normally end up with about 10-15% left by the time I went to bed. The phone also charges pretty fast. You can get up to 80% in an hour or so.

Wrap-up

For a budget smartphone, the Leagoo KIICAA MIX benefits from a pretty impressive display which adheres to the bezel-less trend. The panel is made by Sharp and offers 1080p resolution, Gorilla Glass 4 protection, and 90% screen-to-body ratio. Performance is quite smooth also, whether you’re playing games or chatting with your friends and you can snap some decent photos too.

But there are some disadvantages to consider: call quality is really subpar, the selfie snapper is weirdly positioned and it will get some time getting used to it and oh yeah, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack either.

Even so, if you want to give the whole bezel-less / dual-camera experience a try without paying premium, the Leagoo KIICAA MIX is certainly worth your buck.

Upcoming Debussy headphones have a touchscreen display, but why?

0

Cutting the cord is the next frontier for headphones, but the upcoming Debussy aren’t just your average pair of wireless earphones.

While most of wireless head-mounted audio accessories require users to pair them with a phone, laptop or another device via Bluetooth, the Debussy smart headphones support Wi-Fi and 4G, so the need for pairing is eliminated.

But this isn’t the only thing that makes the Debussy special. Created by Funky Sound Studio, these headphones come with a touchscreen display on the outside of the earcups. Hmm, very strange indeed.

The company explains the touchscreen are good for navigating playlists and setting a custom cover. While you might indeed want to provide people in the subway with pretty pictures to look at when they are glancing your way, we aren’t really sure how you’d go about navigating your playlist from the earcup.

In some weird way it makes sense, given that when using the Debussy, you’re supposed to navigate playlists without your smartphone by your side. But the good news is that the headphones support voice controls, so your music playing won’t get hampered by some experimental way of navigating your track list. Nevertheless the idea is pretty intriguing…

Funky Sound Studio will be present at CES 2017 in Las Vegas next month, where the Debussy will be on display. The headphones look pretty sleek, so hopefully, we’re going to hear more about pricing and availability during the event. Although don’t count on them being cheap, as this is touted as a high-tech luxury audio product.

Razer Phone gets performance enhancing update for camera app

0

Razer introduced its first smartphone, the Razer phone a few weeks ago and everything about the phone was exciting and innovative except for the camera which received a lot of criticism for its mediocre image quality. The camera app that came with the device was also pretty standard and lacked a lot of professional features that come with the stock camera app of other Android devices in this price range.

As an initial attempt to fix this issue, Razer has released a performance enhancing update for its stock camera app. While the update doesn’t really improve the UI of the camera app or add any new features to it, it certainly is a promising start and you can expect a lot of updates from Razer both for enhancing the camera app and also improve the device overall.

razer phone

The Razer phone received a software update in the form of OTA a few weeks back and along with this performance enhancing update for the camera app, you could expect the performance of the camera to get better and it is certainly an improvement over the initial version.

According to some user reviews for the Razer Camera app on the Play Store, the camera is the major flaw when it comes to this device and even though the images captured with the Razer phone have good detailing and color contrast, it lacks in some areas like shutter lag when capturing HDR images, slower auto focus and lack of focus controls for the rear camera.

Hopefully, Razer improves the camera app by adding the most requested features in the upcoming updates. Until then you can try out the popular camera apps from the Play Store to satisfy your photography needs.

Google updates its Search app to help you discover new information faster

0

Searching for something often leads to the discovery of new knowledge and Google is aware of that all too well. So, in an effort to make it easier for people to learn new things, the Mountain View-based company has updated its Search app with expanded snippets, improved Knowledge Panels and advanced suggested content.

Now when you search for a specific topic – let’s say you want to find out more information about the historical figure, Ivar the Boneless – the results will come to you as a Feature Snippet – an algorithmically generate box that appears at the top of the page when you search. Snippets already exist in Search, but now they have been updated to include more images and related searches.

On top of that, Google has also improved the Knowledge Panels in Search to include related content. So for example, when searching for skiing, you’ll see people also searched for related sports such as snowboarding or slalom skiing.

Last but not least, Google has improved the Search function so now when you search for two related topics, you’ll find additional recommendation links at the top of the search page. We’re given an example: let’s say you are looking for more info about World Cup football, so you perform a search on Neymar, immediately followed by one for Messi. Google will take note of the connection between the two searches and display other football players on top of the results page like Ronaldo or Suarez.

Google is currently rolling out the new improvements, so they should start showing in your Search app any time now.

Instagram now lets you save Stories and highlight your favorite ones

0

Instagram is providing its userbase with more Stories-related features. This week the Facebook-owned app unveiled two new tools called Stories Highlights and Stories Archive.

Let’s take each in part and see what they do, although you probably have already deduced for yourself. With Stories Archive enabled, your Stories won’t disappear after 24-hours anymore. Instead, they will be saved in your own private Archive.

The Archive is presented as a grid with Stories being arranged in reverse-chronological order, so you’ll get to see the most recent stories at the top. Once you select a Story, you can re-share it as a post to your profile or a direct message.

The second novelty introduced by Instagram is Stories Highlights which allows users to put the spotlight on a group of their favorite Stories. Stories Highlights will be available for you to try out on your profile page below biography.

To get started just tap on the “New” circle and choose the Stories you want to “highlight” from the Archive. Then add a name to the collection and select a cover. Once that’s all done, your Highlights will show up as a circle on your profile. Note that you can create as many Highlights as you wish and they will remain on your profile until you delete them.

Instagram says the updates represent the biggest change to profiles since 2013. The new features will be available soon for Android and iOS users in the 25 version of Instagram

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 may have 512GB of storage

0

Samsung could be gearing up to use its new storage chip in the upcoming Galaxy S9 and Note 9 that could see the largest internal storage capacity to date in Galaxy devices.

Long gone are the days when 16GB of storage on a smartphone would cut it and you’ll likely find 32GB as the standard but even that is getting tough to fit all your media on. While some prefer to stream media and store things in the cloud, others prefer to store all their stuff locally and for that you need a ton of memory. Android benefits from the ability to install an external memory card in most devices to provide additional storage but that could be a thing of the past thanks to the internal storage capacity in Samsungs new chip hitting 512GB.

Samsung’s new 512GB embedded Universal Flash Storage module is said to be coming next year and the Note 9 and S9 could be the first devices to benefit from them.

“The new Samsung 512GB eUFS provides the best embedded storage solution for next-generation premium smartphones,” said Jaesoo Han, executive vice president of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics. “By assuring an early, stable supply of this advanced embedded storage, Samsung is taking a big step forward in contributing to timely launches of next-generation mobile devices by mobile manufacturers around the world.”

While I personally prefer to stream most of my media and utilize Google Photos, having 512GB of storage available for larger applications would certainly come in handy.

Verizon’s $300 deal off the Pixel 2 goes live online

0

Verizon were offering a $300 deal with a purchase of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL at the end of last week but was an in-store exclusive. The same deal is now live on the online store allowing you to take a net $300 off the RRP of the new Pixel devices.

You’ll need to finance your device over 24 months to get the $300 off but in addition to the discount, Verizon are offering up 50% off a Google Home device.

To get the discount applied, just head over to the Verizon site and pick either a Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL and add it to your cart. Once there, choose the finance option that spreads the cost over 24 months. At this point make sure the Google Home is in your basket as well if you’re interested in taking up the 50% off offer. Proceeding through the checkout process will automatically pick up and apply the relevant promotions.

With this deal, you are looking at a Pixel 2 64GB for $14.58/mo, Pixel 2 128GB for $18.74/mo, Pixel 2 XL 64GB for $22.91/mo, or the Pixel 2 XL 128GB for $27.08/mo. The Google Home will cost you $65 which isn’t technically 50% off as Google has already dropped the price of the Home to $79.99 but Verizon is doing the promotion on the previous RRP of $129.99.

Honor 7X launches in the US for $199, pre-orders start today

0

During a media event today, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor launched its latest mid-ranger, the Honor 7X on the Western market.

The successor of last year’s Honor 6X, the Honor 7X shows a lot more promise mainly due to its modern design and sleek metal-clad body. Indeed, like most in vogue smartphones today, the Honor 7X also boasts a bezel-less (5.93-inch) display with 18:9 aspect ratio.

On the inside, a middle-range Kirin 695 processor keeps the lights on on board of the device, aided by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. This is the version that will be available in the US, whereas Europe will get a more advanced model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Both will include a microSD card slot for memory expansion.

Like its predecessor, the Honor 7X aims to be an affordable dual-camera phone, so it includes a 16-megapixel+2-megapixel combo on the back. On the front lives an 8-megapixel selfie snapper.

Even as it launches months after the launch of Android Oreo, the Honor 7X runs EMUI 5.1 out of the box (based on Android Nougat). Bummer!

That being said, pre-orders for the Honor 7X in the US start today and end on December 14. Interested parties will be able to pick up the phone in Aurora Blue or Midnight Black for only $199 a pop. Any takers?
