Use Fooducate to make your diet goals (review)

You may be looking to better track your dietary habits. Or even just check out what exactly your diet habits actually are, you have PLENTY of choices in the Play Store to get the job done. Some are old stalwarts of the Android market, and there is a constant arrival of new apps to check out.

One option in the Play Store is Fooducate. It’s a freemium-type of nutritional tracker app. It’s designed to allow you count calories, track diet trends, and steer you to better weight management.

The free part of Fooducate is a comprehensive food library, diary, and calorie tracker. You are probably well-aware of the premise here: Fooducate first establishes your caloric needs by having you input your basic bio metrics: height, age, sex, current weight, and goal weight. Using these, it calculates a target of daily calories for you to aim for.

You aim for this by logging what you eat at each meal. This can be done a couple different ways. You can search the database of app-provided and user-uploaded food options, adjust the amount consumed, and add it to your diary.

Another option is a visual scanner, where you can scan UPC codes to quickly gather nutritional stats and uploading to your diary.

As you move through your day and multiple days, Fooducate tallies your calorie totals and shows your trending numbers both numerically and graphically.

If you want to know more about the nutritional quality of your dietary choices, this unfortunately is the free road ends, my friend. Fooducate does offer several premium subscription options; the main one being the “Pro” version, which will give you insight on your intake of protein, carbs, fiber, vitamins, etc.

You also get more specific training with specific/trending diets such as Paleo, non-GMO, low-sodium, and such. Pro also gives you space to log more specific metrics like body measurements, blood pressure, and others. Along with ad-free, of course.

There’s also a few other subscriptions available, including gluten and food allergy tracking, a 10-day “Diet Kickstart” (coaching), and even a pet food tracker & guide (who knew?).

If you choose to go with the premium options, they may be higher than you might be ready for. Example: the Pro version runs from $4.99 for a month-by-month plan, all the way to a lifetime subscription for $74.99 (!).

Of course, the value of these features is arguable and highly dependent on how much you use it over the the length of your subscription time. Your mileage may vary, as they say.

News feed.

Back on the free side of the app, Fooducate also offers an active community of users who post and comment, a-la a mini social network. There is also “Diet Tidbits” section. This provides all kinds of news and tips-and-tricks articles for you to peruse and read to your heart’s content.

You can also log into the companion website version (www.fooducate.com) to log in and find/track food intake, which can be helpful if you’re more comfortable with a bigger screen.

Conclusion

With diet tracker apps, the two main factors that drive user experience are 1.) the size of the library/database, and 2.) the interface.

The database in Fooducate is pretty good, almost great even. In my time with the app, there were a few misses in terms of food. But I could also find a pretty darn close substitute.

The FAQ was refreshingly cute.

The interface is okay –ust okay. This is admittedly hard to put into words. But as I was searching, entering, and reviewing my food choices, it just seemed like was was clicking a time or two more than I wanted to be. It wasn’t bad in any way at all; I just got a little impatient with my experience.

Overall, if you’re looking for a food tracking app, you would do well in checking out Fooducate. It’s easy to use, and is coupled with a good interface and comprehensive database. This makes for a good basic & free experience. If you’re looking for more detailed features you can find them here, but be prepared to pay for the privilege.

Kano, a company teaching kids how to code, joins forces with Sesame Ventures

0

Kano, an educational computer company that provides kids with the tools to build their own technology, has received an investment from Sesame Ventures.

Together, the two companies will share knowledge, insights and best practices regarding parents and children and their interaction with technology from the earliest stages of life.

Sesame Ventures is the investment arm of Sesame Workshop, the company behind the popular educational children’s program Sesame Street. It seeks to partner with companies involved in tech, health, and child welfare and Kano is the latest addition to their list of collaborators.

Educational computing for kids is getting more exciting

As for Kano, it creates kits that allow users to build their own computers. Like the Computer Kit Complete. This is a laptop powered by Raspberry Pi 3 and Kano OS. It’s designed to help kids understand the basics of coding.

The kit is a full standalone machine that children cat put together with an integrated 10.1-inch screen and wireless keyboard. There’s even an additional USB board for connecting additional devices.

Once the device is all set up, Kano encourages users to get creative with programming languages like JavaScript and Python and make, art, games, hack Minecraft and a lot more. The Kano kits work with an Android app. Once users put the kit together, they can follow the steps in the app to learn how to code, doing challenges as they go.

The portable PC also works with popular services like WhatsApp, YouTube, and more.

In case you’re interested in teaching your kid how to code this summer, you should know the Computer Kit Complete is available for purchase for only $199.99. If you order now you can get $50 off.

Now as part of the investment, Kano will gain access to Sesame Workshop’s expertise in early childhood development. So we can expect good things from the company in the near future. Especially if you have been a long-time fan of Sesame Street, you should definitely keep an eye on Kano.

Want to keep using your Pebble smartwatch? Sign-up with a Rebble account until June 30

0

Digital health company Fitbit acquired Pebble, an independent maker of smartphones, back in December 2016.

Despite not having acquired any of Pebble’s hardware assets, Fitbit previously told Pebble fans and app developers that it would keep Pebble smartwatch going until the end of June. Which means in two weeks features like email, text replies, the app store and voice recognition will become obsolete.

But if you’re still struggling with the idea of life without your Pebble smartwatch, we have some good news for you.

You might be able to continue using your device after all

Earlier this year, a team of Pebble developers trying to keep the platform alive created Rebble.  Now Pebble founder and former CEO Eric Migicovsky sent out a Tweet urging Pebble users to sign up with a Rebble account before Fitbit permanently shuts down Pebble servers. You have until June 30 to do so.

If you’re a developer, it’s also important that you sign up with Rebble. Once servers go dark at the end of this month, developers who haven’t jumped on board Rebble will lose the ability to update or change their apps.

Even so, Rebble mentions on its blog that it won’t have everything ready in time for June 30.  But the good news is that you’ll be able to install apps and get your notifications. Pebble Health will also continue to be usable and watchfaces will still work. For the most part.

Rebble hopes it will eventually be able to offer a new app store, web services and more. Basic services will be free, but there will also be a paid tier because this is an unofficial project. So extra functions like weather forecasts and voice dictation will come at a fee.

Nevertheless, it seems that over 10,000 Rebble accounts have been created up until now and linked with a Pebble account. Remember, you have until June 30 to sign-up.

Win an Honor 10 View by entering the Honor Photo Cup contest

0

The World Cup 2018 kick-started a few days ago and to celebrate this major sporting event, Honor unleashed the first ever Honor Photo Cup contest.

As Honor mentions in the announcement post, the World Cup is not only about soccer, but also about culture and passion. And that’s exactly what the company wants users to showcase in the snaps submitted for the Honor Photo Cup.

This summer Honor gives US users the chance to win free smartphones

In fact, users will get to vote which countries will be represented in the Photo Cup. 16 will be selected in the end based on users submissions.

The first theme to be announced is #Color. You can interpret it however you want, so let your creative juices flow. Basically, this round gives mobile photographers the chance to capture the colors around them.

5 users/photos will be selected to make a team. The most 5 most voted photos for each of the 16 countries will become members of that country’s team.

How do you participate? First head over to Facebook and Like and Share the announcement post. Then you need to take a picture related to the theme (remember, that would be #color), and upload to it to Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #HonorPhotoCup.

There will be a voting period and a grand prize winner will be chosen from that group.

The Honor Photo Cup gives you a chance to win an Honor View 10 smartphone (1st prize), or an Honor 7X (2nd prize). Two random winners will win an Honor Band 3.

Interested parties are invited to submit your creations until June 29.

Also, keep checking the Honor website for more updates like new themes and such.

Instagram privacy settings you need manage right now

Instagram is a great app for those who love to explore their creativity by taking beautiful pictures, but what if you don’t want just anyone viewing your snaps? Protecting yourself is extremely important on social media and Instagram privacy is no exception.

See AlsoInstagram lets users shop from Stories

Fortunately, you can take a few steps to ensure you can keep your profile and content secure.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Prevent anyone else having access to your Instagram account by enabling two-factor authentication. You’ll have to add your phone number for this to work, but once you do, you’ll need both your password and a one-time passcode to log into your account.

The password is sent directly to your phone when you’re trying to log in, so unless the person trying to log into your account has access to your phone, you should be safe.

To enable two-factor authentication, go to your profile tab on Instagram. From there, tap the three dots in the top-right corner to open the Options menu. Scroll down until you find Two-Factor Authentication. Tap on it and enable the Require Security Code option. Follow the instructions to add your phone number.

Manually approve photo tags

Don’t you just hate it when people assume they can tag and post images of you, you haven’t had the chance the see yet? To avoid this uncomfortable scenario, you should always hand-approve each tag, and not only on Instagram.

You can do so on Instagram by navigating to Options and taping on Photos of You. You’ll see there are two options: Add Automatically and Add Manually. Tap on the second one.

At the bottom, you’ll also notice the Hide Photos option which obviously lets you hide images you have already been tagged into. This option basically untags you from the pictures you’ve been tagged in, but be careful, if you change your mind in a few weeks and you want the pic to show on your profile again, you won’t be able to restore it. Yet, you will still remain tagged in the original post on your friend/follower’s page.

Keep people from seeing when you were last active

Instagram now lets you see when the followers you’ve been exchanging Direct Messages were last active. But what if you don’t want your ex or that annoying friend keeping tabs on your all the time?

Browse Instagram undisturbed by disabling the activity status option. To do that all you need to do is go Options, scroll down until you find the Show Activity Status option and toggle it off. Now you should be safe from prying eyes.

Hide Instagram Stories from specific people

Instagram lets you quickly upload content (photos or videos) that expires after a day. This way, besides posting normal images n Instagram, users can share what’s happening at the moment.

But what if you’d prefer it if your family members didn’t see your Stories? The good news is that you can hide your Stories from certain people.

Once again open the Options menu and scroll down until you find Story Settings. From here you can choose which people to hide the story from or set permissions for who can comment on your story (Everyone, People You Follow).

Don’t want other people sharing your Story? There’s an option to disable that under Story Settings, as well.

And things are bound to get even tighter, as Instagram is said to be testing a new feature that identifies users who take screenshots of individual Instagram Stories.

Turn off GPS Tagging

Keep stalkers in the dark, by avoiding checking-in certain photos. Make sure you’re not tempted to add that info by turning off Location permission for Instagram via the phone’s Settings>Apps>App permissions.

Most camera apps (including the stock one) will tag your photos with coordinates that show where they’ve been taken.  It’s a great way to organize photos from different trips, but it’s also an easy way for people to track your whereabouts.

So it’s a good idea to disable GPS tagging in your stock camera app. You can do this by going to Apps in your Settings menu and disabling the location permission for your camera app (the same route you took to disable it for Instagram).

Last resort

Make your Instagram account private

Value your privacy above anything else? You can make your Instagram account private. Just go to Options in your app and scroll down until you find the Private Account option and toggle it on.

Once enabled, only people you approve will be able to view your posts. This route has its inconveniences, for example, your follower numbers will be limited. But if you only use Instagram to connect with friends, it won’t bother you much.

There you have it, five ways to tighten Instagram privacy. If you’re not doing at least some of these for yourself, you should consider it.

Games that are based on riddles and puzzles have been around for centuries and are a way to keep the mind in shape. Whether it’s to focus at work, do better in school, or simply stay sharp, there are various reasons for wanting to boost your brainpower.

In order to help you find the best logic games, here is a list of some of the best apps you’ll find for download in the Google Play Store.

Blendoku 2

What it is:

Sudoku has been around for years and is no doubt one of the most famous math gamess around. Blendoku is sort of like Sudoku, but instead of numbers, you use colors to fill in the empty blocks.

Why we like it:

  • Become a color master by moving tiles of solid color into a hue- or shade-base spectrum, leading logically from one color to another.
  • Putting colors in order may seem like an easy task at first, but soon you’ll realize that getting from Magenta to Lime requires some serious mental gymnastics.
  • There’s a Painting Mode which shows the color schemes of famous paintings.
  • You get up to 500 levels you can play for free.

Install Blendoku 2

Unblock Me

What it is:

Unblock Me is a game in which you need to figure out how to get the different colored blocks through the hole.

Why we like it:

  • The game is quite challenging, even if it starts off easy. Blocks on the board are positioned in either horizontal or vertical position. A horizontal block can only move right or left, while the verticals can move up and down. You will need to shift them around in a way that frees a path for the red block and that proves extremely difficult to do in some levels.
  • There are over 14,5000 puzzles to solve. Stuck in one of them? There’s a hint system that helps player solve puzzles.
  • The game has a rating system designed to motivate players to find the best solution.

Brain It On!

What it is:

Brain It On! is a game with a minimalist appearance which challenges you to complete a given objective. Do you think you have the logic skills to do so?

Why we like it:

  • It’s a unique logic game. Each level starts off with an objective written across the screen. It can be a simple “draw a shape” prompt. As you advance request get increasingly difficult such as “place the ball in the orange box”.
  • The game dares you to think out of the box, as you construct shapes and solutions to solve the problem.
  • You can compete with friends, as well as easily share your solution and compare it with the ones your buddies came up with.

Install Brain It Out!

That Level Again 1-3

What it is:

A small but cute logic game(s) where all the levels are the same, but the ways to conquer them are not.

Why it’s fun:

  • The main character in the game has only one desire: to leave the house and you have to help him find the key, so he can escape.
  • Unique gameplay: once you get out of the room, you’ll find yourself in that room again, but the hint on how to play the game has changed. For example, gravity is now weak or you may have to tilt your phone to control your character.
  • The third installment of the game is actually a love story with a few separate levels. Here you’ll team up with your crush to solve puzzles and find the exit.

Logic Pic

What it is:

A logic game developed by Tapps Games where you use logic to color blocks in a given grid and reveal a hidden picture.

Why we like it:

  • Use your deduction skills, solve puzzles and discover awesome colorful pixel art illustrations.
  • You solve puzzles by placing black squares in the correct place according to the numerical patterns on the side of the grid. After the puzzle is complete, the black and white patterns reveal the pic underneath.
  • The game includes a great range of puzzles, interactive tutorial and in-game tips. Extra daily challenges are also part of the bundle.

  • Logic Master 2 includes three different levels of difficulty and 120 questions packed inside 30 levels.

FYI: The OnePlus 6 features Dirac Power Sound and Dirac HD Sound

0

Dirac is a Swedish company that specializes in digital sound optimization solutions and has worked with quite a few smartphone makers in the last few years. Xiaomi, Huawei and OnePlus have all leveraged Dirac technology in order to offer superior audio quality on their devices.

It turns out that Dirac has had a partnership with OnePlus ever since the OnePlus 2 and now it seems this collaboration has extended to the OnePlus 6 as well.

OnePlus 6 has improved audio courtesy of Dirac

According to a new press release, the OnePlus 6 comes with Dirac Power Sound and Dirac HD Sound which combine to deliver a rich, full and premium audio experience.

The statement reveals the OnePlus 6 includes a high-performance micro-speaker in a carefully-designed speaker cabin that maximizes its power. The Dirac Power Sound software further optimizes the performance of said speaker for more natural-sounding audio with richer details and powerful bass.

OnePlus’ earphones also bear Dirac’s mark. Using Dirac HD Sound, an earphone-based digital sound optimization solution, the company’s audio accessories are able to deliver improved audio quality.

The audio improvements are one of many the new OnePlus 6 brings to the table, compared to the OnePlus 5T. The flagship comes packing a gorgeous all-glass body, an enlarged 6.2-inch AMOLED display with a notch and an upgraded dual-camera on the back.

It’s also one of the most powerful smartphones available on the market today. It packs a Snapdragon 845 under the hood and is available with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage.

Even so, the OnePlus 6 won’t break your bank account, as the company still managed to maintain prices lower than the competition’s. The entry-level OnePlus 6 will take with $529.

You can get yours in Mirror Black, Midnight Black or Silk White.

Stay tuned for our own OnePlus 6 review which is coming soon.

Want better battery life from your Galaxy S9? Start here!

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus were two of the most anticipated devices of 2018. These handsets offer great specs, a great display, and an amazing camera.

Unfortunately, there is one downside to these smartphones – the battery. Thanks to the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, Samsung has been playing it safe with pushing the limits of batteries in its different devices.

READ MORE: Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus Review

The same can be said about the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. A 3,000mAh battery is packed into the smaller S9 while the S9 Plus sports a 3,500mAh battery. These capacities are the same that were found in Samsung’s 2017 flagships. Respectable, sure, but let’s see if we can’t get them to last longer.

Luckily, there are a slew of different software tweaks that can be made to help improve the battery. We’re going to take a look at nine different steps you can take to extend the battery life on your S9 or S9 Plus.

Turn off Always-On Display

While the Always-On Display is an extremely helpful feature, it still consumes some of the battery. If you need to squeeze some extra juice out to last you throughout the day, here are the steps:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Lock Screen and security
  3. Toggle Always On Display

There is an option from the AOD settings, to have a schedule for when this feature is turned on. This may be another route for you to take, especially if you don’t need AOD to be turned on when you’re asleep.

Disable Auto-brightness

While auto-brightness is designed to make your screen more visible at different times, it’s a bit of a nuisance. This is especially true if you are constantly looking at your phone in different lighting situations.

There are two different methods in order to disable auto-brightness:

  1. Swipe down to reveal the Notification Shade
  2. Swipe down again to reveal the Quick Settings panel
  3. Next to the brightness bar, tap the down arrow
  4. Toggle Auto Brightness to “off”

The second method requires you to go into Settings:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Display
  3. Toggle Auto brightness

Another way to help save some battery life if you’re running low on time is to lower the brightness manually. This can be done either from the Quick Settings Panel, or from the Display Settings.

Lower the screen resolution

Samsung is known for manufacturing some of the best mobile displays that we have ever seen. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus sport arguably the best display panels ever.

These displays feature a resolution of WQHD+ (2960 x 1440). However, it’s unlikely that you will ever be able to really tell the difference between WQHD+ and FHD+ (2220 x 1080).

Out of the box, the resolution is set to FHD+, but you can turn things down even lower:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Display
  3. Tap Screen Resolution
  4. Move the slider to “HD+”
  5. Tap Apply

This will bump things down a notch, but will definitely save you some important battery percentage points.

Take advantage of Power Saving Mode

Something else that Samsung is known for is packing a bunch of features into its devices. This is where Power Saving Mode comes into play, as there are preset profiles to help squeeze the most battery life out of your Galaxy S9.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Device Maintenance
  3. Tap the Battery icon at the bottom

Within the Power Saving Mode menu, you will find three different presets:

  • Off
  • MID
    • Background Network Usage: Off
    • Always On display: Off
    • Speed Limiter: On
    • Decrease brightness: -10%
    • Screen Resolution: FHD+
  • MAX
    • Background Network Usage: Off
    • Always On display: Off
    • Speed Limiter: On
    • Decrease brightness: -10%
    • Screen Resolution: HD+

Below each of these, you will see how much more battery you can get out of your Galaxy S9. The “Mid” and “Max” presets can also be customized by opening the Details for each option

However, if you want to simply set the profile, you can do so by following these steps:

  • Open Settings
  • Select Device Maintenance
  • Tap the Battery icon at the bottom
  • Tap either “Mid” or “Max”
  • Tap Apply

It’s important to note that when applying these profiles, your device will reveal how much time will be added to your battery life.

Take advantage of Optimizations

Another way for you to keep your battery in tip-top shape is to use Samsung’s built-in optimizations. This is a feature that is found in the “Device maintenance” section in the settings.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Device Maintenance
  3. Tap Optimize button

At the bottom of this screen, you will find several different options: Battery, Performance Mode, Storage, and Memory. Selecting each option will allow you to manually optimize the aforementioned section.

However, the “Optimize Now” button takes care of all of this at the same time. When completed, apps will be closed, RAM will be cleaned up, and your battery will generally be improved.

Disable Intelligent Scan

One of the most popular features in Samsung’s new devices is its iris scanning. This was introduced last year, and has been improved upon with the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.

However, since your device would always be looking for your eyes, it can definitely drain some precious battery. Thankfully, Samsung opted to keep the fingerprint scanner on the rear, so you aren’t stuck with just one way to unlock your device.

If you are okay with using just the fingerprint scanner, we can go ahead and disable Intelligent Scan. Here are the necessary steps:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Lock screen and security
  3. Tap Intelligent Scan
  4. Enter your PIN Code
  5. Toggle Intelligent Scan unlock off

Sure, you won’t be able to unlock your phone with just your eyes or face. But you will still be able to use the fingerprint scanner, or you could be using a “Trusted Device” and don’t have to worry about anything.

Customize Performance Mode

Samsung sure does pack a lot of features into its devices, and the same rings true for the Galaxy S9. There are different performance modes that the smartphone can run at, and these are all customizable.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Device Management
  3. Tap Performance Mode at the bottom

Once you have entered the Performance Mode screen, there are a few different options. If you have manually optimized your device, then you will simply see “Optimized” at the top.

From there, you have three other options:

  • Game: Enhance your gaming experience by making games run more smoothly.
  • Entertainment: Enjoy music and videos with ultra high quality sound and enhanced images.
  • High Performance: Experience the highest quality display settings.

When selecting any of these options, you are presented with the following settings to tweak:

  • Increase brightness
  • Screen resolution
  • Video enhancer
  • UHQ upscaler

Adjusting these settings will help ensure that your device is running with the perfect settings. These can all be adjusted and customized for your own personal settings.

Get rid of battery-hungry apps

Sometimes you find an app that you absolutely fall in love with. However, there may be something rogue going on that causes the some serious, and annoying, battery drain.

Luckily, Samsung has included a feature in the battery settings that allow you to stop these apps. In order to access this setting, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Select Device Management
  3. Tap the Battery Icon at the bottom

From here, you will be greeted with the Power Saving Modes and more. Scrolling down will reveal the “App power monitor” section.

This will show you a break down of how much battery each of your apps is using per house. At the top of this section, there will be a “SAVE POWER” button, which will put these apps to sleep. After this has been completed, you should see your estimated battery life improved just a bit.

Use a darker wallpaper

The last option we have to help save you some battery is the simplest method. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus sport Super AMOLED displays, which means deeper blacks and more vibrant colors.

However, while it may be fun to get the most impressive wallpaper you can possibly find, that won’t help battery. Instead, you will want to use an optimized wallpaper for AMOLED displays, which won’t consume much battery life.

If you don’t care all that much for home screen wallpapers, you could even use just a black wallpaper. Luckily, we have one handy for you, and you can just long-press and save it to your device before setting it as your wallpaper.

Let us know if this has helped increase your battery life at all!
