What is Google Fast Pair?

0

Pairing a Bluetooth device, such as headphones or a speaker, to your phone is a pretty straightforward process. If anything, it’s simple. Yet, it can be tedious. Google Fast Pair makes things easier and more efficient.

The Problem

Many of us own multiple portable electronic devices, be it phones, tablets, and/or Chromebooks.  We log into them using our Google accounts and hop between them. At the same time, we have our favorite headphones, speakers, and Bluetooth accessories.

As easy as it is to pair devices together, it can become a nuisance. Why go through the process over and over again when all you want to do is listen to a podcast or playlist? Sure, it sounds like a “first world problem” but it’s a pain point whenever you buy a new phone or tablet.

The Solution

Google has a way to simplify connecting Bluetooth accessories to Android phones. The feature, called Fast Pair, was introduced back in 2017 and has recently been updated.

Described as a “hassle-free process to pair your Bluetooth devices on all supported Android devices”, it’s makes discovery and pairing easy for Android 6.0+ phones and tablets.

Google’s $159 Pixel Buds offer real-time translation, other smarts

In essence, Google Fast Pair ties your Bluetooth pairing details to your Google account. This way, whenever you log into a new device you don’t have to worry about pairing. Much like Chrome knows your username and passwords for websites, Fast Pair knows how to make your handset and earbuds work together.

How Fast Pair Works

Fast Pair uses Bluetooth Low Energy and your Android phone’s location to automatically discover accessories in close proximity , and automatically connects them via a simple tap.

When a Fast Pair-enabled accessory is in close proximity to your Android smartphone, the phone shows the accessory’s product image, its name, and any related companion app. Once you connect you’ll see a confirmation advising the pairing’s successful. The phone will also offer to download the accessory’s companion app from the Play Store. All of this is done without meddling with the Bluetooth settings.

As part of a recent update (November 2018), Google makes it easier for you to connect Fast Pair-compatible accessories to devices associated with your Google Account. Going forward, Fast Pair will connect accessories to all current and future Android phones (6.0+).

Looking ahead, Google says it will add support for Chromebooks in 2019, too. Once in place, Fast Pair will automatically pair and configure your Chromebook in the same manner; they do support Android apps after all.

How to Use Fast Pair

As indicated above, the pairing process employs traditional Bluetooth connection but in a more streamlined manner. With that said, here’s how to go about pairing your Fast Pair-enabled accessories.

  • Turn on the Fast Pair-ready accessory and put it in pairing mode
  • Your phone will notify you, asking to “Tap to pair” to the accessory
  • Tap the notification and Android establishes a Bluetooth connection
  • A success notification is shown with a link to download any related companion app

What accessories support Fast Pair?

As of today, the following accessories are listed as officially Fast Pair-enabled:

Google is currently working with dozens of manufacturers to bring new accessories to the market; we suspect they’ll arrive at the start of 2019. The annual CES trade show seems as good of a place as any to introduce them.

New Android Auto update expands messaging and media features

0

Google this week unveiled a new series of features for Android Auto to make it easier to view messages or search for music, books and podcasts while you’re on the move. As always Google says the new features add more convenience without sacrificing safety.

First off, the media library in Android Auto has a new look and layout with larger images for the album art, so you can easily identify what you songs you want to hear.

If you already know which song or artist you want to play, you can use the improved voice search feature. Simply can say “OK Google, play Linkin Park” and you’ll immediately be able to view more categorized search results from your app on your car’s screen.

Like listening to music while you drive? Then you’ll love the latest Android Auto update

Music apps such as Spotify, Google Play Music and iHeartRadio have full integration with the latest version of Android Auto. And Google says that it’s working to bring new updates to more music and media apps.

Next, Google has also added some improvements to the whole messaging experience. Android Auto will now display a preview of your texts from Messages, WhatsApp or Hangouts once you’ve stopped driving.

The messages will show up regardless of what app is in use. But note that you’ll need to turn on this preview feature manually via Settings. Once again Google says it will add support for other messaging apps in the near future.

Previously Android Auto could only display plain SMS messages, but Google has now added group messaging, along with MMS and RCS messaging support.

Check: A full list of Android Auto-compatible apps

The updates will become available in the next few days. To take advantage of the new features you’ll need to navigate to the Android Auto page on the Google Play Store and manually update the app from there.

Google Assistant gets a big update in time for Christmas

0

In anticipation of the Christmas celebrations, Google has updated its Google Assistant with a bunch of useful features that will hopefully make the holiday experience more entertaining.

Perhaps the most notable one is “visual lyrics”. Users will be able to view and learn the words of their favorite Christmas songs on the Google Home Hub’s screen or on any other smart display device they might have around the house. Just say: “Hey Google, play ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ on Google Play Music.”

Yes, to take advantage of this karaoke-like feature you’ll need to have a Google Play Music account. The feature only works with select songs, for now.

Owning a smart display just got a lot better

There are other features coming to smart displays. If you use Nest video doorbells, you’ll now be able to communicate back and forth with the person standing at your front door by tapping the blue “Talk” button.

What’s more, when you’re out shopping, you can broadcast a message to your smart device back at home asking if there’s anything else that’s needed. Starting next week, Google will also add the ability for those at home to reply using their own voice.

Other smart display-friendly features include the ability to Call Santa complete with a new set of visuals, photo sharing and touch alarms.

Next, the “Pretty Please” feature which was announced back at Google’s I/O 2018 is now rolling out. This is especially aimed at children who are now encouraged to say “please” and “thank you” when talking to the Assistant. As a reward, the AI will reply using its own of kind and delightful response.

Another kid-focused Google Assistant feature opens up a direct line to the North Pole. Children can now play an interactive Christmas-themed game, as well as take advantage of a special set of Google Home sound effects and music.

What’s more, the Google Assistant can turn nanny and read along with select Disney books (Frozen, Aladdin, Mulan or The Lion King), as well as content from Nickelodeon.  If they don’t have any books, kids can also simply ask the Google Assistant to tell them a story. There are 50 titles to choose from including Beauty and the Beats, Cinderella and Dora’s Super Sleepover.

For adults who are busy making the Christmas preparations, Google has added the ability to create and manage gift lists using just your vice. The feature is built-in directly in the Google Assistant, but Google has plans to roll out support for Google Keep, Any.do, Bring! And Todoist.

Want to give the new features a try? You can since most are already available.

Project Fi is now Google Fi and is available for most Android phones and iPhones

0

What is Google Fi

Google Fi previously known as Project Fi is Google’s attempt at offering its own cellular service. With Google Fi your phone will get access to 3 different 4G LTE networks, unlimited calls + texts, no roaming fees in 170+ destinations, and access to over 2 million secure Wi-Fi hotspots. In theory, this means your phone should hop between network to network and Wi-Fi hotspots ensuring you have the fastest available connection and best coverage.

What Phones are Available for Google Fi

For the past 3 years in order to take advantage of this service, you were required to use one of the Project Fi approved phones. Today that all changes as Google rebrands the service to Google Fi and opens it up to most Android phones and even iPhones. To see if your phone is supported refer to this compatibility checker from the Google Fi site.

Unfortunately, there is a catch, as Google states only phones designed specifically for Fi such as the Google Pixel 3 and select others will take full advantage of the service. This includes seamlessly switching between cellular networks, support for Wi-Fi calling, access to Google Fi’s VPN service, and automatically connecting to secure Wi-Fi hotspots.

Other phones designed for Google Fi besides the Pixel include the LG G7, LG V35, Moto G6, and Moto X4. They can be purchased through the Google Fi website where for November 28 only Google is celebrating by offering travel gift cards with purchase. The gift cards will match the same amount spent on the phone and are available from Airbnb, Delta Air Lines, Hotels.com, and Southwest Airlines.

How Much Does Google Fi Cost

While the service has opened up to more phones the plan itself has gone unchanged. As in the past, the plan starts $20 for unlimited minutes and texts for the first person and $15 for each additional person. Data is charged separately at $10 per gigabyte until you reach 6GB where Bill Protection kicks in and data is free for the rest of the month. However, once you hit 15GB your speeds will be throttled.

Should you Switch to Google Fi

If you’ve ever been interested in the Fi service in the past and you are a frequent traveler, today would be the best day to buy a phone through them. If you’ve been curious about the plan in the past but don’t own a Fi specific phone, then you’ll have more to contemplate. Google Fi offers one of a kind coverage but without a Fi specific phone, you won’t be able to take full advantage of the service. The pricing is also not that competitive when compared to some other networks.

Google Fi now supports most phones, including iPhone

0

Google on Wednesday renamed its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Project Fi, to Google Fi. In the process, it also drastically expanded its list of compatible phones.

Effective immediately, Google Fi is no longer restricted to a short list of select devices. Indeed, pretty much any unlocked phone is now compatible with the service.

Not only does Google Fi support a much wider net of Android phones, but it also now allows for iPhone, too. Compatibility for iPhones is considered beta and requires the use of an iOS app, but it’s a huge step forward.

As far service and rate plans are concerned, Google Fi remains unchanged from its Project Fi days. The network operates on the backs of T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular towers, hopping between them based on best coverage. Additionally, it relies on WiFi when and wherever possible.

Google Fi runs $20 per month for unlimited voice and text; high-speed data is $10 per month for each gigabyte. There are no fees for going over your expected or allotted data plan as billing is pro-rated at the same amount.

Google also provides peace of mind in its Bill Protection which doesn’t charge heavier users for going over 6GB per month on a single line. In a related note, any unused data is refunded to the user in the following bill. Multiple-line accounts are also available.

Google Fi recently added VPN protection to its service for cellular connections, mirroring what it also does for WiFi. This gives subscribers an added layer of protection and security.

If you are interested in signing up for Google Fi, click here to learn more. Note that we’ve attached a referral link which could result in a credit for both AndroidGuys and those who sign up and complete 30 days of service.

Olloclip Multi-Device Clip review

0

It’s no secret that today’s smartphones are capable of capturing photos which are downright stunning. Whether it’s one lens, a dual-camera setup, front-facing, or rear, the stuff we get from phones is awesome.

No matter how good the final image result is, our handsets still lack some of the manual control we get with traditional cameras. We don’t get the same control over what the phone actually sees. There’s rarely anything in the way of macro, wide-angle, telephoto, or other lenses. Things are getting better, but you’ve got to spend flagship money to take advantage of that stuff.

Olloclip offers a solution to that problem, and it’s rather compelling. Announced in late August, the new Multi-Device Clip is an accessory that you clip to your current phone which opens up the door to a range of lenses.

Think of it in terms of how you can swap out lenses on your DLSR camera. For some shots you might want a wide-angle perspective while others may call for something even wider. On the other hand, your subject may necessitate an extremely close (macro) lens. The Olloclip Multi-Device Clip allows for all of these.

Once you have the clip for your handset you can add lenses as need be; there are a number of options for various needs.

  • Super-Wide: Four-element lens with more than 120-degree visibility
  • Ultra-Wide: A 155-degree action camera field-of-view
  • Telephoto: 2X optical zoom to get twice as close to the action
  • Fisheye and Macro: Unique 180-degree wide-angle spherical effect and microscope-like magnification
  • Macro 7X +14X: Get detail oriented and see beyond the naked eye
  • Macro 21X: Turn your phone into a microscope

The clip works with most smartphones, both with and without cases. There’s a growing list of compatible phones on Olloclip’s website which details devices with full or partial compatibility.

Olloclip sent us its clip and a new “Intro Lens” to test out. Moreover, we also received super-wide and telephoto lenses a few days later. The introductory lens actually provides two fields of depth; the wide-angle lens can be unscrewed to provide a macro view.

With slightly more distortion than the Essential Series Super Wide lens, the Intro Wide Angle lens delivers more of a photographic effect. The lens unscrews to reveal a Macro 15x lens to transform any smartphone into a digital microscope.

We found this to be a great way to enhance your mobile photography. The wide angle lends itself nicely to landscape pictures but it also works well for time-lapse shots and for sports, too. Photos are just a little bit more interesting when you’ve got more to look at, right?

Move the clip around to the front and your selfies get wider, letting you get group shots without crowding everyone. If your phone doesn’t have a wide-angle lens on the front or back, you’re really missing out. Well, you’re leaving things out of frame.

Taking off the wide angle lens and moving in close for the macro, we were really impressed. We knew the Pixel 3 XL was getting excellent shots with a lot of detail, but there was something special about the super close stuff. That is, when we got it right.

The pictures you see here are cropped and edited but do represent samples of what you’ll get from the macro lens. To be fair, there were occasionally traces of black vignette effects around the edge due to imprecise placement; we had to crop those out.

It’s Not Easy

It takes a little bit of time to get the feel for what the macro does and what you’ll get from it. Specifically, you’ll need to find the sweet spot for placement over your phone’s camera. In our trials we found that it captured some subjects really well but in others the end result was about half out of focus.

In a handful of our pictures we ended up seeing the dark edge of the clip, giving an almost vignette effect to a corner or side. In others we saw half of the shot in sharp focus with the other half somewhat blurred. To that end, a little cropping and editing seemed to fix things up.

Imprecise placement leads to less than desirable results

The longer we played with it, the more adept we became, better understanding limitations and expectations in the process. We like popping the color and adding effects to images, tweaking things to change the way we look at everyday items. Having a macro lens shows off the textures all around us, and a filtered or edited approach makes everything feel brand new.

Telephoto and Super-Wide

The telephoto lens is like having a 2X optical zoom on your camera. In essence, you’re getting twice as close to your subject. This is a big deal as a lot of people use digital zoom on their camera, basically cropping things out and capturing grainy and unflattering pictures.

It’s definitely on the heavier side, but that’s because it’s a lot of glass. Like the Intro Lens it snaps into the Multi-Device Clip in a matter of seconds and it has a rubber protective cap to keep the lens safe.

Adjusting for the right fit isn’t hard to do, but you’ll want to snap a few sample pictures to check for proper placement. We took a handful of photos before we realized there was a dark shadow creeping into the edge of frame.

In checking with others who have also reviewed various Olloclip accessories we found they share similar experiences. Every phone is different, and each case makes things a unique situation. Event though it looks like you might be able to simply “snap and go” it takes a bit of work to get the precise placement.

Conclusion

In theory the lenses are a fantastic, flexible, and affordable way of getting more out of your phone’s camera. In practice, they are those things, but only after fidgeting and almost constant trial and error.

Olloclip offers a line of protective cases with built-in support for lenses, but only for select iPhones. We get it, there are far too many devices to consider doing this for Android. But, we can’t help but think this would be a better experience if there were something for, say, the Samsung Galaxy S series. Placement would be exact and precise and there’d be no fooling around with placement.

The lenses are designed very well and have a nice, solid weight to them. And, the overall design of the clip system is smart and intuitive. It takes no time to figure out how to swap the lenses in and out and the clamp is straightforward. But, the exact placement over your camera sensor is sometimes frustrating.

Once you’ve got your lens in place and start getting the result you expect, things are great. You won’t be slapping these on in a rush or going between multiple lenses. They’re not really designed for action shots.

Where these work well are in landscapes, still life, time-lapse, and other scenarios where you can steady the phone. Finding the precise focal point and be tough, but once you’ve got it set, things go well. And, if your phone has a solid camera, then you can really have fun with the results.

If you’re looking to explore that fancy camera setup on your phone, or want to get a different perspective on life, you should certainly consider the Olloclip solution. If you want to get up close and personal, or step back and take in a much wider view, the lenses make sense. They’re priced affordably enough to splurge on one or two or to put them on your gift list.

Unfortunately, there are too many phones with multiple cameras on the back and/or front. To that end, the Olloclip Multi-Clip simply doesn’t work. There’s just no way to place the clamp on your phone without covering other lenses. So, if you’re working with something that’s on the increasingly longer list of phones with secondary (or more) cameras, you need to pass on this one.

Ten awesome things you can do with Google Lens

0

Google Lens is an AI-powered technology that leverages your smartphone’s camera and deep machine learning to detect objects. Moreover, the system understands what it detects and offers follow-up actions based on what it sees.

Google Lens was unveiled by Google in 2017 and at launch, it was a Pixel-exclusive feature. But since then, the feature has made it to more phones.

For example, handsets like the OnePlus 6T come with Google Lens integrated into the camera app. Select models from Sony, LG, Motorola, Nokia, ASUS and more also benefit from this feature.

The option is also available in Google Photos and via the Google Assistant. What’s more, Google also offers a standalone Lens app which you can download via the Play Store.

Also read:

As you can see the feature is widely available and you haven’t tried it out until now, we suggest you do because it’s pretty cool. Here are some things you can do with it.

Easily copy text

Google Lens allows you to copy text in the form of phone numbers, dates, addresses and email addresses, as well as text from the real world.

A lot of people still use business cards and Google Lens will help you save all the info to your address book and beyond. Simply tap on a phone number/address from the camera app and Lens will suggest what to do with the info. For example, it will offer you the option to add the number as new contact/call/text/email or visit the affiliate website (if any).

Want to copy a random piece of text? Point the Lens at it and you’ll be given the option to select the text you want to copy. It’s that simple.

Find similar products

Google Lens easily lets you find similar products. Just snap a photo of something you love (example: your favorite lip scrub) and Lens will immediately suggest alternative products, complete with link. Just tap and buy!

Get quick info about books

The Holiday season is coming, and books make for great presents. So if you find yourself in a bookshop looking at a book trying to decide if your aunt Susan would like it, Google Lens can give you a helping hand.

Simply point the camera at the book cover and you can easily get access to a short summary of the book, reviews and more via a link to a full Google search.

Sure you can always take the classic route. Open your browser and type in the name of the book manually, but the Google Lens way is a lot faster.

Open links

Browsing something on your PC and you want to continue doing so on your smartphone? Use your phone to snap a photo of the address and Google Lens will immediately serve up the link which you can open on your mobile device.

Lens can also recognize links available on any kind of print media including posters and business cards. Just point the camera at it and you’re good to go!

Access review/ratings of restaurants/bars/venues

Point Google Lens towards a café or restaurant (from the inside or outside) and it will show you ratings/reviews of that place. So when you’re not sure whether you should stay or not, Lens has your back.

Identify plants and animals

Google Lens is a fun tool if you’re a nature observer. Snap pictures of plants and animals and the AI-driven system will recognize them for you. Or simply point the camera at images of living things, the effect will be the same.

Discover music
