Anker Prime Docking Station Review

Anker has expanded into the docking station market over the last few years. We’ve reviewed several of them in that time and always come away impressed. As with any company, Anker has been improving with each edition, and the new Anker Prime Docking Station might be the best yet… with one limitation.

Design

The first thing that strikes you when taking this Prime Docking Station out of the box is the overall fit and finish. Anker nailed this in every way. It has an LED display that allows you to keep an eye on the status of all inputs and outputs. This shows the current state of things like displays currently plugged in, charging rates, and even the clock while in standby.

With 140W of charging power, triple-display support, and a design that feels as premium as it looks, the Anker Prime Docking Station turns your desk into a true command center.

I can’t stress how good this Anker Prime Docking Station looks. It’s a modern retro design that reminds me of an antique radio in many ways. One such point of nostalgia is the knob on the side. This beautifully gnarled crown functions as a scroll wheel to navigate up and down the screens on the LED display, and punching it in selects menu items. It’s a fantastic physical input you just don’t see on devices in this segment.

Inputs and Outputs

Let’s start with the front panel below the status display. Here you have a microSD and full sized SD reader on the far left. In the middle is a three array USB-C hub, with two set for 100W/10Gbps max and the other drops the transfer speeds down to 5Gbps. Finally, to the right is a headphone/mic combo port.

Turning the Anker Prime Docking station to the back, you have the full business end of the unit. Let’s go left to right on this one, starting with an Ethernet jack capable of 2.5Gbps. Next you have a USB-A at 480Mbps and two more at 5Gbps.

The Anker Prime Dock includes three outputs for displays. There’s a single DisplayPort option rated for max 8k/60Hz, and then you have two HDMI rated for 8k at 30Hz. Lastly, you have the USB-C port for the host laptop or PC (140W/10Gbps max) and the 120V power port.

Daily Usage

Overall, I’ve been very impressed with the performance. I haven’t had any hiccups with my machines using the Anker Prime Docking Station. I’ve been using two HDMI monitors that fall inside the dock’s ranges, and they’ve come through crisp and have connected without failure each time I’ve needed them.

The same is true for all the mentioned inputs and outputs. Ethernet has been fantastic and fast. Charging has been great, using the front hubs for charging my phone and smartwatch when needed. Anker’s PowerIQ4 kicks in and charges to the appropriate rates regardless of device.

I’m really glad that Anker included the SD reader slots. This is the holy grail input of photographers, who also tend to be Mac users. I’ve shared this with a few friends in the field, and they immediately thought this was a great all-around solution for Mac users with M-series who take photos. The DisplayLink tech makes it able to expand these Apple devices across multiple displays and gives them the SD slots to boot.

And that brings me to my one callout surrounding the Anker Prime Docking Station. It requires additional software drivers to work on any device except Chromebooks. Machines running macOS, Windows, or even Linux will need to install the DisplayLink driver to use external monitors. This isn’t a dealbreaker, and as I mentioned with Apple users it can even extend to additional monitors not allowed by Thunderbolt.

Final Thoughts 

Anker has a beautiful, functional DisplayLink dock with the Prime Docking Station. The rock solid hardware is a driver installation away from being one of the best options to come across your desk. Capable of 140 Watts of power and up to three displays makes this an easy buy if in the market for such a purchase.

AmazFit wasn’t on my fitness tracker radar a year ago. The company has always come up in adverts on social media, but I’ve never given it much thought. It struck me as another budget lineup that you see on Amazon, but probably isn’t worth your investment. 

Man! I couldn’t have been more wrong. Not only are they making higher end products like the new AmazFit Balance 2, they probably have a fitness tracker that meets you for whatever your needs. In this Level Up, we’ll be taking a look our favorite devices and how they can even work together.

Level Up is where we explore the gear that actually makes a difference, whether that’s in how you live, work, or unwind. Each edition brings together standout products, whether tied by brand or by theme, that turn the everyday into something a little more exceptional.

AmazFit Balance 2 Watch

You can check out my full review to get the full breakdown on the Balance 2. Some of the highlights to take into account are Sapphire Crystal lens, up to 21 days of battery life, and large 1.5-inch touchscreen. It’s a total package that can easily compete with the likes of Garmin and Polar for only $300.

I’ve found the Balance 2 to be extremely accurate in tracking both activities and sleep metrics. This all gets rolled into a daily score called BioCharge scaled from a value of one to one hundred. As you get more recovery from things like a good night’s rest, the closer you get to 100 to start the day. Each activity or high stress levels deplete this battery through the day.

Powered by Zepp OS and the new Zepp Flow AI features, and you get a full-featured smartwatch with fitness focus. Honestly, if you’ve ever used Wear OS, it’s immediately similar to navigate and use. Add in that you get universal 22mm quick release lugs for almost any watch band on the planet, and you have a stylish option to quickly swap bads for different events.

AmazFit Helio Strap

I reviewed the Helio Strap as well, and it’s essentially a screenless option for watch wearers. Falling somewhere in the vain of the original Fitbit, you get all the biometric tracking like heart rate, pace, and steps on a small plastic device wrapped in a nylon strap mechanism. It makes for a very distraction-free option that can also be worn on the biceps with a new larger band option.

Again, it’s all funneled through the Zepp companion app and even was the launch device for the company’s new BioCharge metric mentioned above. Since the entire Helio Strap is buttonless, the AmazFit device automatically triggers tracking when it recognizes things like elevated heart rate. It was a little too sensitive at launch, but the Zepp team has done a great job to sort this out with software updates.

The real kicker of the Helio Strap is that it’s only going to cost you $100. The added value of this device with the Zepp app is well worth that investment.

AmazFit Helio Ring

The final entry in the most recent AmazFit lineup is the Helio Ring. The easiest way to put this one in perspective is all the things the Strap does but on your finger. The stainless steel Helio is flanked by optical sensors on the interior, constantly scanning for your physiology metrics.

I’ve found it to be just as accurate as the other two offerings, and slides right into the Devices menu of the Zepp app next to the Helio Strap and Balance 2. The Helio Ring is essentially the final option of a wide variety here of three fantastic trackers to make sure every step, workout, nap, and meal are documented.

At $200, the AmazFit Helio Ring might be hard to swallow for those used to wearing a watch, but if you don’t like something on your wrist, this is a great way to add this capability to your wellness arsenal.

Zepp App

In closing, we need to take a look at the software workhorse powering all these devices. The companion Zepp app might be the star of the show, to be honest. It’s obviously heavily inspired by the Garmin app, and that’s a good thing. You get quick and easy to read tiles on the homepage breaking down all your biometric readings and activities.

You can even replace popular apps like MyFitnessPal with the Zepp nutritional tracking. Powered by some of the same OpenAI LLM as the fitness aspect, the company has built a robust food tracking section into the app. This allows for input via voice, text, or photo to log your calories and food metrics.

And best of all? You can sync all three of these devices to the app simultaneously. This makes for a unique product and device lineup that can truly hit any variable in preference or environment you throw at the app, but still silos that information into a single screen.

One thing I always commend Journey for is the attention to details. The leather feels great and small things like the metal button accent on the outside just set their items apart from the competition. It does come with a bit of premium $90 price tag, but I think Journey’s Versa Money Clip Wallet and Stand well worth it in one of two color: Midnight Black or Dove Grey.

LOC8 VERSA Money Clip Wallet and Stand

Take all the fantastic features you just read above and then add Apple’s Find My functionality. Money clip… check. Up to five cards of storage…check. LOC8 adds that one more step of making sure you can track your goods down the lost and found. 

What makes this iteration special in comparison to other LOC8 models? The company added a nifty little trick of charging through the MagSafe connection. No more proprietary pogo pinned cables needed. If you’re buying a MagSafe compatible case you more than likely also have a daily MagSafe charger.

The final entry into this Journey feature is the LOC8 Passport Finder Gen 2. I was very happy with the model from last year and there’s a ton of carryover in DNA. You have a full sleeve for your passport, up to five identification or credit cards, a pen, and addition docs.

Integrated into the this is the Find My tech from Apple to easily be able to know where all your international essentials are exactly where they need to be at a moments notice. I can’t tell you how valuable of a piece of mind the Journey Passport Finder lends you on a trip. If you cruise more than once a decade, you need this device.
