Motorola set to deliver new flagship phone on April 22

0

It has been some time since Motorola has announced a flagship series of phone, but all that looks to change in a few days time. The Lenovo-owned brand has taken to social media to announce a “Flagship Launch E-vent” for April 22.

A short teaser video posted online doesn’t divulge anything in the way of details but it does show a curved display. Assuming the rumors surfacing over the last couple of months prove accurate, the device shown here is the “Edge”.

The specs circulating over the last few months suggest we could be in for a rather powerful experience from the new Motorola flagship. In fact, there may be two models with chatter of an Edge and an Edge Plus out there.

Reported to have an attractive design that competes with other high-end devices of 2020, we’re anxious to find out what Motorola has up its sleeves.

Specifications anticipated in the Motorola Edge Plus include a 6.7-inch display, a 108-megapixel rear camera, and 5,000mAh battery. For those who aren’t sure what that means, it’s big-time stuff all around.

Internally, we’re expecting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor with 8GB/12GB RAM. Joining that 108-megapixel camera may be a wide-angle and a telephoto sensor, making it one of the more compelling experiences around, at least on paper.

The standard Edge phone, for its part, could scale back the CPU to a Snapdragon 765 with 6GB of RAM. Still highly respectable stuff for today’s user.

Rumors suggest the Edge+ could be exclusive to Verizon but we fully anticipate something in the order of unlocked and direct to consumer.

LG Velvet to usher in new brand identity

0

LG Electronics has announced that it’s moving away from using alphanumeric designations for its devices and adopting a new branding strategy.

Instead of the oft-confusing and ever-expanding G, V, and K series of handsets, LG will instead return using more “familiar and expressive “naming conventions. That is to say, it will give each model its own name, starting with the Velvet.

Our new branding reflects current trends of addressing the unique personal tastes and emotions of the individual with a greater emphasis on design. It’s a more intuitive approach that we are confident will resonate with today’s consumers and help us to establish a clearer brand identity. – Chang Ma, SVP of product strategy

According to the device maker, the LG Velvet will be the first product on a new roadmap that places an emphasis on distinctive designs and “tactile” elegance.

Just last week LG began hinting at the design for the Velvet, indicating that it would employ a “raindrop” camera array which had increasingly smaller sensors on the back, calling to mind water droplets.

It’s not immediately clear whether the LG Velvet is just a new name for the presumed G8 successor or if it truly represents a bottom-up approach to a new line. We’ll no doubt learn more in the coming weeks as more details or a formal announcement come to light.

How to use your Android phone as a webcam for your PC

0

During this time of lockdown, most of us are working from home and are required to be in constant communication with our colleagues or employers throughout the day via Skype or Zoom Video calls or other online videoconference calls. While a lot of people might have a laptop with a built-in webcam, some people who are working from home for the first time might not have a PC with a webcam installed or might have one but is not working properly or has some issue with it.

If you are facing such issues you don’t need to worry about not having a webcam or having a faulty one as long as you have an Android phone with you. Because in this post we are going to discuss a simple method using which you can use your Android phone as a webcam for your PC to join video calls, record videos or even stream live video from your PC. Just follow the below step by step instructions to use your Android phone as a webcam for your PC.

How to use your Android phone as a webcam for your PC

Step 1:

The first step involves downloading and installing the Android app called Droid Cam from the Google Play Store to your Android phone.

Step 2:

Now visit this link from your Windows PC and then click on the download button to download the DroidCam client to your Windows PC.

Once the file has been downloaded to your PC, open the downloaded file and follow the setup instructions to install the DroidCam client software to your Windows Pc.

DroidCam

Step 3:

Now open the DroidCam client software on your Windows PC from the desktop shortcut and also open the DroidCam app on your Android phone.

Before you proceed any further, make sure that both your Android phone and your Windows PC are connected to the same WiFi network. This is essential for this method to work.

After opening the app and providing basic permissions for the app to access audio and video on your Android phone, you will be taken to the home screen of the app where you will be presented with the IP address and port details along with the link to access the IP cam from your web browser.

webcam

Step 4:

Now go back to the DroidCam Client software on your Windows PC and then enter the device IP and the DroidCam port details that you found in the DroidCam app on your Android phone.

Now select the video and the audio checkboxes and then press the start button to proceed.

webcam

Step 5:

Your Android phone’s camera will now begin to transmit the video and audio to your Windows PC and you can see a preview of it on the DroidCam client’s software on your PC.

webcam

Step 6:

To use this video transmission and to set up your Android phone to be used as a webcam on your favorite video calling apps like Skype or Zoom, you need to select your Android phone as the webcam source.

To do this, Open Zoom or a video conference app of your choice and go to the app settings. From here, you can select the video settings and select the DroidCam Source in the camera option to be able to use your Android phone’s camera as a webcam in that app.

webcam

Step 7:

You can also modify certain settings in the DroidCam Android app to make the app work according to your preferences.

Just go to the settings page from the app and you can select between your front and your back cam to be used as the source for the webcam and also even limit FPS to save battery, choose to use your phone’s microphone as well along with the camera and such.

It is also recommended that you enable the option to ‘Keep device awake’ to prevent your Android phone from entering into standby mode while you are on a video call in your PC. If you are worried about the battery life you can either save battery by enabling the ‘Auto Dim Screen’ option or keep your phone connected to the charger for the duration of the video call if possible.

Feel free to let us know in the comments below if you have any questions regarding this method on how to use your Android phone as a webcam for your PC or have any problems during the setup process.

Best bags and backpacks for carrying your gear this spring (Spring 2020)

0

We all have things we carry with us on a daily basis. Whether it’s the student with books, laptops, and paperwork, or the worker bee with important documents, a 2-in-1, and a whole array of gadgets, we rely on bags and backpacks.

Even those who don’t necessarily need a bag for daily usage will occasionally need to grab one as they head out the door for a weekend getaway or trip to the gym every few days.

When it comes to toting things around, there are plenty of choices. And while some of the more familiar brands might always have something interesting, there are other names in the space who offer equally compelling solutions.

We’ve gathered a handful of some of the best bags and backpacks around. If you’re looking to pick up a new one for yourself, or maybe as a gift, we’d definitely suggest starting with the following selection.

Ascentials Pro Meta Travel Pack

Deceptively flexible, this is the sort of bag that serves many masters. As a backpack it’s perfect for lugging around your books, portable electronics, and daily paperwork. Turned on its side, it becomes more of a messenger bag with a handle and/or shoulder strap. Indeed, there’s room to toss in a 15-inch laptop.

On the outside of the bag you’ll locate three pockets, each with its own size and use case. Dive in and there are nine pockets hidden away for all sorts of stowage.

It’s a lightweight bag/backpack, but its comprised of a tough ballistic nylon and water resistant nylon. In other words, it’s tougher than you’d imagine.

No matter what you do with it, or where you go with it, you’ll have no issue cleaning it up. Everything wipes down easily, even the inside pockets. $149.95 at Ascentials Pro

Samsonite REMAGG Shieldpack

For some of us, the daily grind revolves heavily around gaming. Maybe it’s LAN parties, Esports, a fully stocked Nintendo Switch bundle, or something else. Either way, you need a solid bag for carrying around your gear.

On the surface it more closely resembles a travel bag or standard piece of luggage. Inside, though, it gives way to mesh zippered pockets, padded compartments, and places to tuck away microSD cards, batteries, cables, and the like. Indeed, each section has a tiny graphic to notate where you might place items.

Similarly, the exterior is made up of grays, silvers, and black but the inside is much more playful with a red-accented design. This bag lends itself very well to gaming consoles and games, but also transitions well for laptops, headphones, chargers, and more “traditional” gear.

There are a pair of stash pockets on the front side for things you need to quickly grab when on the go. Additionally, there’s a quick access zippered pocket on the side which works great for snacks. $139.99 at Samsonite

Solo Re:store Tote

Those of you who prefer a giant pocket/purse-like experience, may be interested in this bag from Solo. Made from five recycled PET bottles, the heathered grey bag is more than just a big hole in which to shove your items.

Inside you’ll find a padded compartment that fits laptops and tablets up to 15-inches. Moreover, an interior organizer section lets you tuck your purse or wallet so they’re not tossing about.

On the outside is a zippered pocket that’s perfect for a phone, notebook, or something you might want to grab quickly. Flip the bag around and you’ll locate a back panel that slides over the handle of your luggage.

Kudos to Solo for making a bag that could very easily be much more boring. The color is neutral and stylish with a modern aesthetic that works for users of all ages. $55 at Solo

Sherpani Quest AT

This bag skews more toward the female demographic, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less capable. With pockets for days, there are sleeves and pouches for laptops or tablets, two water bottles, and smaller items. And then there’s the spacious main opening which houses your yoga outfit, gym shoes, or papers and files.

The exterior offers up two quick access areas for things like books, journals, passports, headphones, or portable chargers. While it might appear as if the pair of zippers access the same space, they actually overlap one another.

At the top you’ll locate a sunglasses pocket that’s lined with fleece, keeping your favorite shades safe from the other items in your backpack. On the very bottom are straps for securing a yoga mat, hoodie, or tripod.

As secure as it is stylish, the RFID card guard keeps your wallet and credit cards safe from ne’er-do-well types who’d like to swipe your information. The anti-slash material is extra durable, and won’t fall prey to a quick cut and run. Rounding things out are a few locking zippers that slow criminals down, and a chair loop lock that can secure your bag when at a coffee shop or the library.

The Quest AT is smaller in overall stature but still big enough to carry your everyday items. With a great blend of silver, black, and an olive-like green, we really dig the Sterling colors. Wanna go dark and keep a low profile? Opt for the Carbon. Or, add some spice to your life with the reddish-orange Copper variant. $99.95 at Sherpani

UAG STD. Issue 24-Liter Backpack

Urban Armor Gear (UAG), the brand behind some of the strongest phone cases on the market, has dipped its toes in the proverbial backpack waters. And if this first model is a sign of things to come, we’re already fans.

Offered in three color options (Orange Midnight Camo, Grey Midnight Camo, and Black Midnight Camo), the backpack is one massive pocket with a handful of dividers and sleeves. Unzip it all the way and you’ll find there’s room for about two days worth of clothing, plus an array of daily items.

There are two side zippers on the exterior that give way to quick access pouches and pockets. It’s here where you might toss in a portable charger, cables, pens, pencils, and/or a water bottle.

Our review sample (Orange Midnight Camo) has very solid orange colors with a more muted camouflage that’s really only obvious upon closer inspection. It’s definitely hip looking stuff and doesn’t feel like a brand with no experience in the space.

When it comes to everyday items, there’s room for up to a 16-inch laptop, plus a sleeve for a tablet or 2-in-1. It’s a big bag, with up to 24 liters of space, but certainly doesn’t feel heavy. Also nifty, the weather-resistant material wipes down with no hassle. $99.95 at Urban Armor Gear

Peak Design Everyday Backpack

If your day-to-day lifestyle necessitates that you tote around cameras, lenses, tripods, and other gear, you’ll love this backpack. On the other hand, it’s tough for us to imagine someone not loving this one, regardless of need.

It doesn’t look like it from the exterior but the backpack is massive. And because of the way it’s designed, it can be made to be one giant pocket. Packed properly, you can easily put a week’s worth of clothes inside.

The removable and adjustable “FlexFold” dividers are incredibly helpful if you’re trying to compartmentalize things. Insert and remove the three separators to meet your needs, even if they chance from day to day.

While most bags tend to open at the top and have access from the sides, we found the Peak Design works best on its side. Well, that’s when we used the dividers.

The MagLatch clasping system is damn cool, too, and really makes top loading and access easy. If you’re the type to just shove things in a bag with no regard for separation, you’ll appreciate the easy entry.

Don’t mistake this for a bag designed for photographers or people who need to carry around larger items. There are side pockets, sleeves, and a top pocket for toting around everyday items. Indeed, it works just as well as any other listed here for laptops, paperwork, water bottles, and more.

We really dig the design of the bag, from its hip and modern color to the choices in fabrics and materials. The closer we look, the more we love it.

It’s not just looks, either. Crafted from weatherproof nylon, it has reinforced stress points, a waterproof bottom liner, and solid zippers. And as if that doesn’t bring you peace of mind, maybe the lifetime warranty will.

If you’re looking for a day-to-day bag, opt for the 20L ($260) option. But, if your needs are a little more specific or require larger items, go big with the 30L ($290) version. Our review sample was Charcoal but the three other color options look just as fashionable.

HEX Back Loader DSLR Backpack

Those of you routinely carry a camera with lenses, a tripod, and other gear might be interested in this one.

Constructed from water-resistant materials, there’s padding throughout with multiple-use compartments that can be configured to your heart’s desire. Need to take 3-4 lenses in the field? No sweat. Just looking to carry a couple of basic items with your shooter? Mix and match the partitions to suit your needs.

As the name implies, the bag is easily accessed from the back. Unzip it like a suitcase and you’ll be able to reach directly into the pockets. The top zipper on the bag provides immediate access to your DSLR or most important items.

On one side of the backpack side straps allow for easy transport of a tripod; on the other is a mesh pocket with adjustable strap for a water bottle.

There are plenty of pockets for phones, notebooks, chargers, cables, and other items. If it’s a phone you’d like to keep safe and snug, use the exterior one on the bottom and take advantage of the ultra soft material.

It might not be immediately obvious, but there’s a padded laptop slot that can house any standard laptop, Chromebook, or 2-in-1 device. $190 at Hex Brand

How to force dark mode on any app on your Android phone

0

The Dark mode was one of the most requested and quite arguably one of the best features introduced in the latest version of Android 10. However, not all Android apps on your device support the dark mode feature and even if you had a system-wide dark mode setting enabled on your Android 10 smartphone, some apps might still be bright as day as their developers still haven’t added dark mode support to them.

If you are a fan of dark mode and were disappointed to see that some of your favorite apps in Android still not supporting dark mode, then you would be happy to know that with the help of a third-party app called Darq, you can force any app installed on your Android 10 device to support dark mode even if that app doesn’t support it natively. The app also allows you to schedule dark mode to these apps and the best part is that you can do all this without needing root access on your device.

So, if you want all the apps on your device to go to the dark side, then just follow the below step by step instructions to install the Darq app on your Android 10 device and force dark mode on your favorite apps.

How to force dark mode on any app on your Android phone

Step 1:

For this method to work you need to install a small script from the Darq app on your phone from your computer. To do that, you need to first install the ADB driver on your Windows PC.

Click on this link and follow the instructions to install ADB drivers on your PC and proceed to the next step.

Step 2:

Before you connect your Android phone to your PC using the USB connection, you should first enable the USB debugging option on your phone.

To do that, go to Settings->About Phone->Build number and then tap on the option multiple times until you get a message that ‘developer options’ have been enabled.

Now, go back to the main settings page and scroll down to the bottom to find and open the Developer options settings.

From here, find and enable the USB debugging option.

Step 3:

The next step involves installing the Darq Android app on your phone. Since the app is not available for download on the Google Play Store, you need to sideload it to your phone by installing the app from an APK file.

You can download the APK file for the Darq app from this link and once the file is downloaded, open and install the Darq app on your Android phone to proceed further.

Step 4:

Now go to your PC and click on this link to download the script files for the Darq app to your PC. A zip file will be downloaded to your PC, extract the contents of a file to a new folder and save it to a desired location on your PC.

Step 5:

Open the Darq app on your Android phone and then provide permission for the app to access the accessibility service on your device. This is to allow the app to access the override force-dark option for the installed apps on your device.

Step 6:

Now connect your phone to your PC using the USB cable and allow the permission to enable USB debugging on your phone from your Pc.

Then open the folder on your PC where you have extracted the downloaded Darq script files. From here open the file named, ‘rundarq-windows.bat‘ to run the script.

Step 7:

Once you have installed the script on your phone, the Darq app is now ready to be used. Just open the app on your Android 10 device and select the ‘Enable dark theme’ option from the main page.

All the apps on your phone will now be changed to a dark theme even if they do not support it already. You can also select the option ‘Enabled apps’ from Darq main page and then only select the apps to which you want the dark mode to be enabled.

dark mode

You also have the option to use the Auto dark theme mode which will automatically enable dark mode at sunset and disable it again at sunrise. You can choose to enable this option either by your timezone or your location based on your preferences.

Keep in mind that the settings of the app will be reset if you restart your phone. So if you want to enable the force dark mode option after you restart your device, you need to once again connect your Android phone to your PC and then install the script by following the same steps to get the option back.

Google Stadia now free for all with two-month Pro trial

0

Google’s game-streaming service, Stadia, is now available for free to anyone who has a Google account. In an announcement today Google says it is giving gamers in 14 countries free access to Stadia for two months. It is expected to roll out immediately and finish over the next two days.

Anyone who signs up under the deal will receive two free months of Stadia Pro and gain instant access to nine titles, including GRID, Destiny 2: The Collection, and Thumper.

We’re facing some of the most challenging times in recent memory. Video games can be a valuable way to socialize with friends and family when you’re stuck at home, so we’re giving gamers in 14 countries free access to Stadia for two months.

Existing Stadia Pro subscribers are getting a reprieve, too. According to Google, it will not charge gamers over the next two months. After that, Stadia Pro is $9.99 per month, with an option to cancel the subscription at any time.

Until today’s news, Stadia was only available through a $129 “Premiere Edition” which comes with a controller. A free “Base” version has been promised for some time, but the coronavirus pandemic led Google to finally open the service up.

It’s not explicitly clear that the free Base tier will stick around, but we’ve heard that players will be able to switch to it once the Pro trial ends.

You can purchase even more games on the store, which will remain yours to play even if you cancel your Stadia Pro subscription

Given the potential for a large influx of new players, Google is taking steps to mitigate issues. To that end, it’s limiting gaming to 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second, and stereo sound.

We reviewed the Stadia experience at its launch; read it here.

Samsung serves up new Galaxy A phones for US, including 5G models

0

Samsung on Wednesday announced a number of new phones as part of its ever-expanding Galaxy A family. Included among the upcoming devices are Samsung’s first Galaxy A handsets with 5G support.

As we’ve seen in other Samsung Galaxy A models, the phones are priced more affordably than the flagship line yet still retain a moderate amount of hardware. Whereas the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note hover at the top, these fill in the spaces below.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s on the horizon for Samsung’s new Galaxy A phones.

Galaxy A01

Priced just $110, the phone features a 5.7-inch HD display as well as a 13-megapixel main camera and depth camera on the rear. Additionally, it includes a 3,000mAh battery with fast charging, 2GB RAM, and 16GB storage (with microSD expansion). Available on April 9 through Verizon.

Galaxy A11

Slightly up the ladder at $180, this one has a larger 6.4-inch LCD display and a more generous 4,000mAh battery with fast charging. Similarly, it has a 13-megapixel rear camera with a wide angle camera, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, and rear fingerprint reader.

Galaxy A21

For $250, customers get a 6.5-inch HD display and 4,000mAh battery with fast charging. Moreover, there’s 3GB RAM with 32GB storage, plus the microSD expansion card slot. The rear houses a 16-megapixel main camera, a wide camera, and a macro camera.

Galaxy A51

At $400, this mid-range experience includes a 6.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage, and a microSD expansion card slot. As for cameras, there are four of them on the back, including a 48-megapixel, 12-megapixel wide, macro, and depth cameras. Rounding things out are a 32MP front-facing camera, in-display fingerprint rader, and a 4,000mAh battery with fast charging. Verizon and Sprint will carry this phone starting April 9.

Galaxy A51 5G

Nearly identical to its 4G counterpart, this phone is priced $500 and includes a 4,500mAh battery with 6GB/8GB RAM.

Galaxy A71 5G

Priced $600, this one dials things up with a 6.7-inch screen, a better (64-megapixel) camera experience, and faster charging speeds at 25W.

General Availability

For the models listed above which do not have launch dates, Samsung indicates they’ll arrive “later this summer.”

OnePlus 8 Pro confirmed to have 30W fast wireless charging

0

OnePlus 8 Pro, the upcoming ‘Ultraflagship’ phone from OnePlus is confirmed to be the first phone in the OnePlus series to support wireless charging and is said to come with a 30W fast wireless charging feature. This is almost twice as fast as the wireless charging speeds of other flagship devices from Google or Samsung and it is capable of charging the OnePlus 8 Pro device from 0-50% in just 30 minutes which is quite impressive.

While OnePlus is already well known for having flagship killer devices with rapid fast wired charging capabilities, this is the first time the company is introducing the fast wireless charging feature in one of their devices. However, it seems that only the OnePlus 8 Pro model of the upcoming OnePlus 8 series will support the 30W fast wireless charging feature which is also dubbed as Warp Charge 30 Wireless.

OnePlus 8 Pro

It is also worth noting that the Warp Charge 30 wired charging feature on last year’s OnePlus 7T was able to charge the device from 0-70% in 30 minutes, so we can expect the same charging speeds or even faster in the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro, which is expected to launch on April 14. While the 30W wireless charging feature is impressive, it would only work if you are using the OnePlus’s proprietary wireless charging stand. However, you can still use Qi-compatible wireless chargers with the OnePlus 8 devices if you don’t mind slower charging speeds.

The upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro is also rumored to have several other exciting new features besides the already confirmed 30W fast wireless charging. These features might include an upgraded 120Hz refresh rate display, 5G connectivity support and possibly reverse wireless charging similar to the ones in the Samsung flagship devices. You can watch the online launch event of the OnePlus 8 Series on April 14, at 11:00 AM EDT / 4 PM BST / 5 PM CEST / 8:30 PM IST by clicking on this link.
