Early details surface for Samsung Galaxy Fold 2

0

The first details have started to surface for the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Fold and, from the sounds of things, it should be a winner. At least in terms of displays and screen quality.

According to Ross Young, founder/CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) and founder of DisplaySearch, the presumed Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 will have a 7.59-inch main display with a 2,213 x 1,689 pixel resolution. Additionally, the main display will have a 120Hz refresh rate with what shakes out to be 372 pixels per inch.

That internal display also see a number of upgrades, starting with an an ultra-thin glass and 60Hz refresh rate. Moreover, it will be larger at 6.23-inches with a resolution of 2,267 x 819 pixels. That’s a pretty big size increase over the first model.

Samsung is reportedly employing a hole-punch cutout for the camera as opposed to the “notch” used on the first generation.

Rounding things out, the Galaxy Fold 2 is said to include Samsung’s S Pen and bridge the gap between the Galaxy Note and Tab series.

Video teases design of upcoming LG Velvet

0

A new video hitting YouTube over the weekend gives us a fairly decent look at LG’s upcoming Velvet smartphone.

The short clip doesn’t give us any real hardware specifications, but does indicate it will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 G processor. Given this, we know it will have support for 5G networks, something we imagine most new phones at the mid/upper level have in 2020.

LG has been slow-dripping the tease for its forthcoming phone, mostly emphasizing the design. It’s likely for good reason as even if the LG Velvet happens to be a mid-range by comparison, it will still have more than enough performance to go around.

What do we learn from the clip design-wise? LG is leaning heavily into the pearlescent and gradient finish for the back of its phone, that’s for sure. And while the black and white look pretty snazzy, that red/orange one really gets our attention.

With a few more weeks to go before the rumored introduction, we could be treated to a number of additional leaks, formal and informal.

Key specifications include a 6.7-inch display, three rear cameras, and a 4,500mAh battery. With at least 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, there’s plenty of performance to go around.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite official as brand’s latest mid-range tablet

0

Samsung has expanded its tablet lineup with the introduction of a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. although it’s pretty similar to the Galaxy Tab S6 of 2019 in way of design, it features more modest hardware and what Samsung terms “accessible” price.

Specifications include a 10.4-inch screen at 2,000 x 1,200 pixel resolution, an octa-core processor, and 4GB RAM. Internal storage is shown to be 64GB and 128GB with a microSD expansion card for up to 1TB of external media.

Other noteworthy details include an 8-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, dual speakers with Dolby Atmos, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 7,040mAh battery. According to Samsung, users should look for up to 13 hours of video playback per charge.

As for software, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite runs Android 10 with Samsung’s custom UI 2.0.

A key component in the experience, of course, comes in the way of support for Samsung’s S Pen. Users can mark up images, highlight text, search tags, take notes, edit photos, and more. The tablet comes with the stylus and an optional Book Cover accessory includes a magnetic holder to ensure it’s not lost.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite comes in both Wi-Fi and LTE versions and will be available in Oxford Gray, Angora Blue, and Chiffon Pink. There’s no hard date for availability, but Samsung says it will be here later this quarter with a $350 price tag.

Samsung also recently introduced its Galaxy Tab A 8.4, a $280 tablet with LTE support.

Android phones to get Coronavirus tracking updates via Google Play Store

0

Google has officially confirmed that the Coronavirus tracking updates will be sent to all Android phones running Android version 6 or above through the Google Play Store. This way of sending the updates would be more stable and quicker compared to system-level updates to Android phones as it might be delayed due to the carrier and manufacture restrictions. Google is building this COVID-19 contact tracing system for smartphones in collaboration with Apple.

However, this update could not be made available to Android phones in China or Huawei devices due to certain pre-existing restrictions. Google is planning to publish a separate, secure framework of this anonymous tracking system that could be used by these companies to implement the coronavirus tracking system to their devices if they ever intend to. This method is advantageous because it ensures that even older Android phones that have stopped receiving system or security updates will still be able to receive this update through the Google Play Services in their device.

Coronavirus tracking

The first phase of this update will involve pushing the relevant APIs via the Google Play Services to enable interoperability between the Android and iOS smartphones using the official apps on both these platforms from public health authorities across the world. Following this, the second phase will include the APIs being built into the Android and iOS operating systems allowing a lot of users to take part in the Bluetooth enabled contact tracing system for tracking COVID-19.

While the first phase is expected to begin in May, there is no definitive time frame announced for the second phase, however, it is expected to be due in the coming months. This entire process has privacy as the main focus and neither the identity of the users involved or their location data would be revealed in this process. The device of the person who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 will be able to transmit a list of everybody they have come in close contact with to the cloud and these people will be notified and be prompted to contact the local health authorities.

Pokemon Go gets major update with at-home playing in mind

0

Niantic on Wednesday announced a whole host of new changes coming to Pokemon Go which look to keep the game fun and involved in these pandemic times.

Set to go live in the near future are features such as the ability to remotely access raids, automatically receive daily tasks, and help with collecting gifts.

One of the biggest problems facing Pokemon Go players is that they’re not really supposed to be out playing. They’re especially not allowed to be gathering in large groups. Beating a raid boss is pretty hard when you’re going it alone or can’t team up.

READ: Android apps to make your Pokemon Go experience even better

As such, remote raiding is coming to Pokemon Go and it will let players access battles for raid that can be seen on the nearby screen. And while they’ll give players the same benefits as showing up in person at launch, things will change with time.

At midnight every day, you’ll receive a bonus task without having to spin a PokéStop! These tasks will be different from Field Research tasks you receive from PokéStops and will focus on activities that you can complete from home.

Another problem with being confined to the home is that you can’t pick up field research from spinning Pokestops. Moreover, you can’t get gifts to send to other players, either. To combat this, Pokemon Go will automatically add a Bonus Field Research task for players. Buddy Pokemon will also gain the ability to visit nearby Pokestops on your behalf to bring back gifts.

  • With a Remote Raid Pass, you can access Raid Battles you can see on the Nearby screen from wherever you are.
  • You’ll receive a bonus Field Research task daily without having to spin a PokéStop.
  • As you run low on Gifts, your Buddy Pokémon will venture to nearby PokéStops and bring some Gifts back for you to send out to your friends.
  • You’ll be able to power up your Pokémon to the desired CP by using all the required Candies and Stardust at once.
  • After using a Star Piece, Lucky Egg, or Incense, you’ll be able to use more of the same item to extend the item’s effect beyond the usual 30-minute limit. No more waiting for an item effect to expire before you can use another one!
  • Look out for other updates, including improved battle-screen design.

Other cool changes coming to the game are more in line with quality of life (QoL) updates to improve the experience. Look for the ability to activate multiple Lucky Eggs, Incense, and Star Pieces as well as being able to power up a Pokemon to a desired level in one move.

There’s quite a lot to unpack in the new changes and it’s an exciting time to be a Pokemon Go player. To learn more about the forthcoming features, head to pokemongolive.com.
