JLAB Talk USB Microphone review

0

When it comes to creating content, audio quality often trumps video in the minds of consumers. That is to say they would rather have higher quality audio than high-res video. Just so long as they can clearly hear what’s going on they’re willing to forgive less than stellar video.

If you’re a content creator, podcast producer, game streamer, or would-be vlogger, you’ll want to get a decent microphone as quickly as possible. And if you’re just starting out, you don’t have a large budget to tap. Fortunately, there are great devices to consider which don’t cost very much at all. Take, for instance, the JLab Talk desktop microphone.

Test Drive posts are our way of sharing immediate impressions and early reactions to products, apps, and services. Not to be construed as a full review, these are first-blush looks at things we think you’d enjoy.

Priced about $100, the JLab Talk USB Microphone is a wallet-friendly barrier into the world of podcasting and game streaming. Moreover, it has a surprising amount of options for the price.

Features

  • Three condensors
  • Four directional pattern modes
  • 6.5-ft USB/USB-C cable for plug and play usage
  • Two-year warranty

Early Impressions

The JLab Talk is a lightweight and portable unit that travels easily. It’s the kind of device that works well for those who like to set up shop on a picnic table, office desk, or kitchen table.

Choose from a handful of directional options (omni, cardioid, bi-directional, and stereo) based on your activity and whether you’re recording with others.

Other details we like are the quick mute button and headphone jack, something you’re not always going to find on less expensive competitors. Throw in gain control and volume control and you’re looking at a hell of an entry point in the world of podcasting and audio content creation.

Extra points awarded for the two year warranty.

Where to Buy

Learn more about the Talk USB Microphone at the JLab website where it’s available for $100. Shopping on a smaller budget or have fewer (or loftier) demands? There are a couple of other options to choose from.

As of today we see that Amazon offers the Talk USB Mic for just $59.40 which is almost half off.

Mobvoi unveils the TicWatch E3 with Snapdragon Wear 4100 for $200

0

Last year, Mobvoi unveiled the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, the first smartwatch to feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 4100 chipset. In our review, I noted how it is the fastest Wear OS watch I’ve ever used along with having stellar battery life. The only problem is that it’s a bit on the pricey side coming in at $300. However, if you wanted Qualcomm’s latest chipset, you had no choice.

That was until today, when Mobvoi announced a new member to its TicWatch lineup sporting the Snapdragon Wear 4100. Introducing the TicWatch E3, the latest Mobvoi smartwatch with top-of-the-line specs and a much more affordable $200 price tag.

So, what else do you need to know about Mobvoi’s latest smartwatch? Besides being powered by the Snapdragon Wear 4100, it comes with 1GB of RAM, which in case you didn’t know, that really makes a difference with performance. It’s very difficult to recommend a smartwatch with less than 1GB of RAM these days and it’s nice to see Mobvoi didn’t cheap out here.

Along with all that power, the TicWatch E3 also comes packed with health sensors. There’s a PPG heart rate sensor and SpO2 sensor for 24-hour monitoring of your heart rate and blood oxygen levels. The watch can also keep track of your steps, sleeping schedule, stress levels, and a wide variety of exercises with the new redesigned Mobvoi app.

Speaking of tracking exercises, the TicWatch E3 features an IP68 water resistance rating making it suitable for tracking swimming.

Besides being a capable health tracker, the TicWatch E3 also features a mic and speaker making it possible to take calls on the watch. Plus, you can make contactless payments using Google Pay thanks to the NFC chip.

Finally, the TicWatch E3 uses a 1.3-inch display and has a 380mAh battery to keep the lights on. Mobvoi promises up to two days of battery life with Essential mode enabled, which puts the smartwatch into a special low power mode. In this mode, you’ll be able to view the time, date, steps, and heart rate. However, all other features will be disabled to reduce power usage. By default, the TicWatch E3 will enable Essential mode when the battery hits five percent.

The TicWatch E3 is available for purchase in Panther Black starting today. It retails for $200 and can be purchased from Amazon or Mobvoi’s website.

OnePlus announces the new Nord N200 5G with 90Hz display for $240

0

The never settle brand announced a new member to its most affordable lineup of smartphones today with the OnePlus Nord N200 5G for a price of $240. Like previous Nord phones, this one promises to give you high-end features without the high cost.

For starters, the Nord N200 5G features a 6.49-inch FHD display with a 90Hz refresh rate to ensure smoother transitions and images on the screen. Also, as the name suggests, it will be a 5G phone, and quite an affordable one at that.

Besides the display and 5G connectivity, the rest of the specs are mostly what you’d expect from an entry-level phone these days. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and includes 64GB of storage. There’s also a microSD card slot allowing you to expand the storage further.

That should be helpful in storing all of the photos you’ll be taking with the OnePlus Nord N200 5G’s triple camera setup on the rear of the device. We don’t know much about the focal length of the cameras on the back, whether or not there is a zoom lens or if the additional cameras are for portrait or macros, but we do know that the main shooter uses a 13MP sensor.

When it comes time to take some selfies, the hole-punch camera on the front of the device uses an even larger sensor coming in at 16MP.

Finally, keeping that 90Hz display lit up is a 5,000mAh battery which OnePlus says will allow you to spend hours watching TV, playing graphically intense games, or browsing the internet without fear of the device running out of juice. However, when you do need to charge up, the Nord N200 5G uses 18W charging to make sure you can fill up quickly and ditch the cable.

Sales of the OnePlus Nord N200 5G will begin on June 25, 2021, at 11 am ET with a price of $240 USD. T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile are the exclusive carrier partners for the phone here in the U.S., but it will also be available for purchase unlocked from Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo, and OnePlus.com.

Fabric takes the pain out of life insurance

Purchasing life insurance is a bummer. It means thinking about the worst-case scenario, which can be a dread-inducing experience. And then there’s the actual process of shopping for it. Skimming through plans with lots of fine-print and details that can feel difficult to understand and submitting yourself to a barrage of cold-calling agents and health exams is enough to make a person throw their hands up in the air and give up.

Some of the challenges in finding life insurance is part of the reason why Millennials are uncovered or undercovered by their policy. According to New York Life, Millennials self-report a 78 percent shortfall in life insurance coverage. That means more than three in four Millennial families are at significant risk of facing financial hardship if the worst were to happen.

You do not want to be on the wrong side of that daunting statistic. You want to take care of your family and make sure that your loved ones have access to the resources they need should something happen. You also want to make the process of getting those resources as simple and convenient as possible. That is where Fabric comes in.

Fabric has defined a modern life insurance experience. Through its easy-to-navigate digital experience, Fabric lets you customize your term length and coverage in a matter of a few taps. Set up 10-, 15-, or 20-year terms with coverage extending from $100,000 to $5,000,000.

You can set it all up easily, without jumping through all of the hoops that life insurance typically requires, too. You don’t need to set up long sales calls and meetings, or go through unnecessary medical exams and blood tests. All you need is 10 minutes to apply for your policy online.

Fabric could help get you the modern life insurance policy that you need. It is simple to set up and will provide you and your family the peace of mind that you deserve. Take 10 minutes out of your day to secure your family’s future.

Realme GT debuts with high-end specs and mid-range price

0

Chinese phone maker realme on Tuesday announced its latest handset, the high-end GT, for several European markets. Comprised of robust hardware specifications, it is priced much lower than its contemporaries. In other words, it’s the latest attempt at a “flagship killer.”

Priced as low as โ‚ฌ369 (~ $450 USD), the Realme GT boasts a 6.4-inch HD display with 120Hz refresh rate with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The phone runs Android 11 but is among the first on the market to support the Android 12 Beta 1. According to realme, it will launch an updated UI later this year based on feedback from the Developer Preview program.

Key hardware details include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with 8GB/12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB/256GB UFS 3.1 storage capacities.

In terms of cameras, the realme GT has a 64-megapixel primary camera, 8-megapixel ultrawide, 2-megapixel macro, and 16-megapixel selfie shooter.

The 4,500mAh battery should be more than sufficient for a day and half of usage; the 65W fast charging ensures it takes but a few minutes to juice up.

There is no option for wireless charging but it does have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The title of โ€œflagship killerโ€ is commonly thrown around the smartphone space; it was also what OnePlus billed its handsets in the first generations. Realme, who has emerged from the same original source (Oppo) and supply chain, looks to be more worthy of the moniker for now

Availability

Pricing and availability is a tad interesting and perhaps even confusing. The 8GB+128GB will be priced at โ‚ฌ449 (~$550 USD) with an early-bird promo of โ‚ฌ369 (~$450 USD), on sale from June 21 via Ali Express. The 12GB+256GB will be priced at โ‚ฌ599 (~$725 USD) with an early-bird promo of โ‚ฌ499 (~$600 USD) available from June 21st to all consumers during Amazon Prime Day.

Cricket Wireless Buyer’s Guide

0

A growing number of US consumers are becoming familiar with Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) like Metro, Boost Mobile, and Straight Talk. They operate using the towers and infrastructure from the big players but have their own rates, customer service, and phone selection.

Let’s take a look at one of them in particular: Cricket Wireless

About

Cricket Wireless (Cricket) initially launched in 1999 and is a US-based prepaid wireless service provider; it’s a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T. It offers its own lineup of GSM phones, many of which are also found at other carriers. As one might expect, it uses AT&T for its coverage.

Does Cricket have any special deals?

Currently you can find a number of phones discounted with new phone numbers, upgrades, and porting your existing number. Some models are even free with the right combination of port-in and signing up for a particular rate plan.

READ: Buying an unlocked phone? Consider these questions

Additionally, Cricket has discounted phones from Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung with some of them potentially free with a plan.

What are Cricket rate plans like?

Cricket rate plans are no-contract, meaning you can go month-to-month with no long-term agreement or cancellation fees. Moreover, they do not charge for going over your allotted data and taxes are included in the cost.

  • $30/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with 2GB of high-speed data
  • $40/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with 10GB of high-speed data
  • $55/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with unlimited data
  • $60/month: Unlimited Talk and Text with unlimited high-speed data 15GB mobile hotspot

Customers can save $5 per month on most plans with automatic bill payment. The $55 plan has data speeds which are limited to a max of 8Mbps while the $60 option is quicker and includes the hotspot feature. Depending on location and phone, subscribers may see 5G speeds on the $60 plan.

Does Cricket offer multiple line plans?

Customers interested in family plans or multiple lines can do so with discounted pricing. Cricket will let you calculate rates for two to five lines. On the $55 Unlimited Plan, for instance, you get at the following monthly rates:

  • 2 Lines – $80/mo ($30 discount)
  • 3 Lines – $90/mo ($75 discount)
  • 4 Lines – $100/mo ($120 discount)
  • 5 lines – $125/mo ($150 discount)

Which major prepaid carrier has the best $40 rate plan?

Are there any other Cricket features or offerings?

Cricket offers a handful of other options to its customers, most of which can pair with the aforementioned rate plans. Details here include international calling, insurance against lost and stolen phones, extra data, and mobile hotspot.

Cricket also sells Data Only options with 20GB ($35), 40GB ($50), and 100GB ($90) allotments.

What phones are available at Cricket?

Taking a look at the current lineup of phones offered through Cricket we find familiar names from brands like LG, Samsung, and Motorola. There are also devices from the likes of Nokia, and Alcatel, too.

Like most prepaid providers, phone selection skews toward affordability as opposed to performance. With that said, we do recognize there are some compelling devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G or the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G.

AT&T is the largest wireless network in the US, serving nearly 160 million subscribers. And with it comes a large selection of phones. But what about its prepaid brand, Cricket Wireless? What options does it have when it comes to Android handsets?

To be sure, it doesn’t have the same variety of handsets, and a large percentage of them are older or refurbished phones.

Nevertheless, we’ve gathered up a handful of the best phones you can purchase at Cricket Wireless today. Because truth be told, there are still some incredible bargains to be had there.

As always, we suggest buying an unlocked phone or a used tier-one AT&T phone for use with AT&T Prepaid. The options are plentiful in both directions and you’ll likely get something more powerful.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

Take Samsung’s flagship phone from 2020 and dial things up a smidge; that’s what you get from this one. It’s everything an early adopter could love, including a large screen, excellent cameras, and generous battery. Oh, and power on top of power.

Running the show is a late version of Android with Samsung’s much-improved custom touches, an experience we’ve really come to enjoy. Other features we love include the in-display fingerprint reader, wireless charging and power sharing, and its tons of storage space.

Samsung Galaxy A51

The Galaxy S series gets all of the fanfare, but the Galaxy A line is just as good for many users. Indeed, these lower cost options give consumers the same great Samsung design but with just the right amount of features. Weโ€™re talking maybe half the price yet still no noticeable difference in performance.

Standout features in the Galaxy A51 include a 6.5-inch HD display, and quad-camera (16MP main lens, 120 degree ultra wide, 2MP depth camera, and 2MP macro) array. An octa-core processor is paired 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The phone runs Android 10 with a 4,000mAh battery should most users far beyond a full day.

Samsung Galaxy A51

Samsung Galaxy A10e

For a fraction of the price of a flagship experience customers can purchase Samsung Galaxy A10e, a phone that’s perfect for first-time and prepaid users.

Standout features include a 5.83-inch HD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front-facing sensor. An octa-core processor is paired with Android 9.0, and there’s plenty of storage room available internally and via microSD expansion cards. The 3,000mAh battery should get typical users through more than a full day, and the USB Type-C port means lightning fast charging.

LG Stylo 6

Big, practical, and the only one with a stylus, the LG Stylo 6 provides users with a large screen and an extra bit of functionality. The 6.8-inch display offers up plenty of high-definition space for scribbling notes, marking up documents, and more.

Running Android 10, the phone is powered by an octa-core processor with 3GB RAM. Storage comes in at 64GB but a microSD expansion card slot opens the door for up to 2TB external media.

Wrapping things up, the LG handset has a triple camera configuration on the rear, front-facing 13-megapixel selfie camera, and a 4,000mAh battery.

Nokia 3.1 Plus

Younger users might not even know that there used to be a Nokia from the days before Android. Nevertheless, we love the stuff that the brand puts out today and find it to be some of the more interesting value propositions.

Don’t let that price fool you; itโ€™s all the phone that most prepaid users might need as 2020 gets underway. Included are a large (5.99-inch) screen and a 3,500mAh battery that lasts well beyond a day. We’re also really fond of the Android 9 Pie software build and USB Type-C charging.

When youโ€™re buying multiple phones for a family you donโ€™t want to spend any more than necessary. The Nokia phone is an excellent option for first time users and parents alike.

Motorola Moto G7 Supra

We absolutely adore what Motorola does with its Android phones, particularly along the lower end of the price spectrum. Its handsets run a bare bones Android experience that leaves things pretty much the way Google intended. In other words, clean, intuitive, and user friendly.

Here, you get a massive (6.2-inch) HD screen, a modern build of Android, and respectable smattering of mid-range hardware. Key details include an octa-core processor, 32GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot for external media.

Other things we appreciate? A water resistant coating, USB Type-C charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The best part of all? There’s a 5,000mAh battery that’s good enough to get typical users through two days of usage.

Can I use my own phone at Cricket?

You can often use your current GSM phone, especially if it was previously paired with AT&T. Head to Cricket’s website to check whether your specific model is supported. You’ll want to ensure that your phone is unlocked prior to purchasing the SIM card kit currently priced at just $10.

Google to roll out six new Android features this summer

0

Every so often, Google likes to drop some new Android features. They’re not part of any new Android version, they’re just some useful features. The last time they did this was back in February, and this included Password Checkup and Message scheduling in Google Messages. This time around, Google is rolling out six new features.

Android Earthquake Alerts System

Anroid Earthquake Alerts System has been in the works for a year as a way to alert people of an earthquake seconds before it happens. Previously available in New Zealand and Greece, rollout is expanded to Turkey, the Phillipines, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Google hopes for greater rollout over the year.

Messages

Google Messages starring

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed information that was communicated over text but it’s impossible to find in the slew of text messages you send and receive in a day? Well, apparently Google has too. Now, in Google Messages, you can now star a message. If you need to revisit it, tap on the “starred” category in Google Messages and it’ll be right there.

This feature is expected to roll out over the next few weeks.

Emoji Kitchen

Need the perfect sticker in the heat of a really good conversation? Emoji Kitchen’s got your back. Soon, Emoji Kitchen will be able to give you contextual suggestions once a message is typed.

This feature is currently available in Gboard beta and will roll out to all Gboard users soon for messages written in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

More voice smarts

Hands full or on the go? Google Assistant can help. Now, you can Ask Google to open or search many apps so you can accomplish tasks quickly and easily, even from the lock screen.

Voice Access

Improved Voice Access

Voice Access is a program meant for people with motor disabilities that allows you to navigate your phone and apps.

Now, this capability is improved with the beta feature gaze detection, which can make it so Voice Access only works when you’re looking at your screen.

Voice Access also now has improved password input to let you input letters, numbers, and symbols quickly and easily, including if you need a letter to be capitalized.

Android Auto

Android Auto is now more customizable, with a personalized launcher, manual dark modes, and easier app navigation within the interface.

EV charging, parking and navigation apps are now available in Android Auto, as well as an enhanced messaging experience.

You can read more about the new features here.

Accessing and recovering data with a live Linux distribution

0

While Linux operating systems โ€“ also known as distributions or distros, for short โ€“ tend to be less consumer-friendly than Windows and even recent Mac platforms, they do offer quite a bit of functionality that isn’t readily available in mainstream operating systems. One such feature, which can even be applied to other platforms, is the ability to easily recover data from a failed drive via a live Linux distro.ย

How to Access a Failed System

A live Linux distribution is used to introduce potential users to the Linux platform. It runs entirely in a system’s RAM and it doesn’t make any changes to saved data. Many different distros, including Ubuntu, use this feature as a highly effective way of showcasing their features and functionality.

But it’s also useful when trying to access and recover data from a failing drive. In many cases, hard drive failure and data corruption only affects a specific portion of the drive. While this renders data in that section inaccessible and, in many cases, unrecoverable, any data that is stored outside of the affected might remain intact. If your system files have become corrupted, for example, there’s a good chance that your personal files, which are hosted in a different sector on the drive, are still recoverable.

To begin the process and find out, simply install Ubuntu onto a USB flash drive, boot your system and, when prompted, click on “Try Ubuntu.” By clicking this option instead of installing it, you’ll effectively launch a live instance of Ubuntu. Many other Linux distros support this feature in some form or another, but the method for accessing the live instance will likely vary depending on the exact distro you’re using.

If you’re an advanced user, you’ll be able to locate the failed or corrupted hard drive in question once you’ve launched Ubuntu into your system’s RAM. From here, it’s just a matter of mounting the device within Linux and copying that data to another USB drive. For best results, try to avoid using the same drive that contains your Linux distro.

From here, it’s just a matter of copying your data back onto a fully functional machine. While you might be missing some of your data, including whatever was stored in the failed or corrupted sectors, the majority of your information should still be available.

Comparing the Alternatives

Remember: this doesn’t apply strictly to Linux systems. The above tips can be useful in accessing and recovering data from Windows and Mac systems, too, but they’re only general guidelines. If a live Linux distro doesn’t work, you might find better luck with the latest in data recovery software.

There are plenty of options to choose from โ€“ including many choices that are built specifically for the Linux platform. R-Studio, for example, is a professional solution that is developed and maintained by a highly skilled team of experts. Not only is R-Studio’s software capable of accessing and recovering data that a live Linux distro cannot, but the software itself was engineered with modern Linux distros โ€“ and modern data problems โ€“ in mind.
