Govee Glide Hexa Pro Light Panel and Neon Rope Light Review

0

Over the past few years, Govee has made a name for itself in smart home lighting like no other. It has done this by creating a lineup of unique lighting products and constantly adding features to its fantastic smartphone app.

To see proof of this, you need to look no further than the Govee Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels and RGBIC Neon Rope Light with Razer Chroma integration that was sent out to us for review.

Design

The Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels come in the shape of a hexagon with an accent on the inside to give it a 3D cube appearance. They are sold in packs of 10 with cables to connect everything together and adhesive on the back of each panel to install on the wall.

The Neon Rope Light comes rolled up in the box with everything needed for installation, including brackets with adhesive on the back and screws if you choose a more permanent solution.

Installation

Installing these lights from Govee can be a little daunting because you’re attaching them directly to the wall. Govee tries to make this as easy as possible with video tutorials, an included bubble level, and a couple of extra adhesive strips in case of mistakes. Regardless, it’s still time-consuming and you’re going to have to be careful.

Govee provides you with several preset design options when installing the Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels or you can create your own. I went with one of the presets and the app walks you through the installation step-by-step, including showing where to plug in each cable since each light connects to the next one in the pattern. You’ll still want to take your time and be careful, because with only two spare 3M strips in the box, you don’t get much room for errors.

The Govee Neon Rope Light requires even more caution, because it is recommended to not remove the brackets after installation. Doing so can remove the paint and damage your walls. As you can see, I didn’t do the best installation with mine. I simply ran out of space, and wasn’t sure what to do with it. Now, I’m going to pay for it when I attempt to remove it later on.

Don’t be like me. Use one of the preset designs in the app, and it would help if you had a friend around while setting it up. Although, while the presets in the app are great, it doesn’t give you a step-by-step installation walkthrough like with the Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels. This makes it a much more challenging install.

User experience

Govee excels at features and usability. The company is constantly updating its app and products with new features that really makes its lights shine. While I would have been perfectly content with the number of scenes and customizations the lights provide by default, Govee has taken it to a whole new level with Razer Chroma integration.

For the uninitiated, Razer Chroma is software that runs on your PC and allows lights that support it to sync up together. This can be as simple as setting one singular color between your mouse, keyboard, and other compatible lights–such as the Govee Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels and Neon Rope Light.

However, where the Razer Chroma integration really impresses, is when you use it combined with supported games. One of the best examples of this integration is Apex Legends, which syncs your lights and changes the color during banner transitions, when picking up loot or taking damage, and more.

It turns your gaming session into a more interactive experience by giving you dynamic visual indicators in your room. Basically, it looks stunning and makes the games come to life. It reminds me of Govee’s Flow Pro Light Bars I reviewed and how much they enhanced my movie-watching experience.

The only downside is that only a limited number of games support Razer Chroma, but even without Chroma integration, the Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels and Neon Rope Light have a lot to offer. There are over 20 preset scenes to choose from with mesmerizing color schemes, along with options to customize some scenes. Additionally, there are modes for reacting to music and you can even create your own DIY scenes.

Also, keep in mind that you’ll need to install the Govee desktop app and I noticed that the Razer Chroma integration wouldn’t function properly unless I had the app open and running.

Final thoughts

Govee has quickly become one of my favorite companies. I can’t get enough of its smart lighting products, and I’m consistently impressed with the polish and features of the app. Even without the integration with Razer Chroma, the Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels and Neon Rope Light are remarkable products, the partnership with Razer is just icing on the cake.

My only criticisms would be with the installation of the Neon Rope Light. For starters, it uses a massive plug that will easily block off two or more outlets on your surge protector. Then, you really need to have a design in mind before installing, and even then, it helps to have an extra set of hands. Making a mistake could be costly, because removing the brackets will most likely cause damage to your paint job.

Otherwise, these are a couple of amazing smart lights that will be an upgrade for any room in your home and you’ll love showing them off to your friends. The Govee Glide Hexa Pro Light Panels currently retail for $200, while the Neon Rope Light sells for $120, and both can be purchased from Amazon or Govee’s website.

Google Photos has been my go-to storage location for all of my photos and videos for years now. It started as a cloud-based backup location in case I ever lost or damaged my phone. Over the years, Google has implemented new features and updates that have slowly turned it into my default gallery.

Google has updated its Photos app yet again. Adding new features to Memories and making it even easier to share them with family and friends. My favorite feature in Google Photos is Memories. I love how it digs up forgotten photos and presents them in a fun way for my family and me to relive those moments. My all-time favorites are the Then and Now feature, which takes similar shots of my kids over the years and shows them growing up.

Memories updates

Google is bringing more video moments to its Memories. Photos will automatically select and trim your longer videos and send you the most meaningful part of them. Google is making still photos more dynamic by utilizing a subtle zoom that brings movement to your Memories and beginning next month, they will start adding instrumental music to some Memories.

Google Photos is adding a new feature called Styles. Graphic art will automatically be added to your Memories to help make them pop. To celebrate the launch, Photos will have limited-time styles from artists Shantell Martin and Lisa Cogdon.

You can now pick your photos, rearrange the layout and select your own designs with the new collage editor. When you are done making your collage you can utilize the new share entire Memories with your friends and family feature. Select your favorite memories, select your friends and family and share all of your favorite Google-created Memories.

Moonside Lamp One review

0

Back in the day, we used to have lava lamps to give our rooms a bit of mood lighting. However, modern times call for modern solutions, and the Moonside Lamp One is one of those solutions. Thankfully, Moonside was kind enough to provide us with one for a review; it can be purchased for $65 on Amazon.

Design

The first thing I noticed about the Moonside Lamp One is how lightweight it is. I nearly thought the box was empty when I first picked it up because the lamp itself hardly weighs more than a lightbulb. The second thing I noticed, is that it uses a USB Type-C cable and Quick Charge power brick for power.

Unfortunately, the cable is quite short, and that’s my only complaint with the design. Luckily, USB Type A to C cables are quite common, and this could easily be replaced with a longer cable.

My favorite part of the design of the Moonside Lamp One is how it’s nearly 360-degrees of light. The bottom of the lamp where the power button and USB Type-C port are located are the only part of the lamp which is not lit up. Thanks to this, and the rounded corners, it provides a seamless lighting effect almost like that of a glowing orb.

User experience

The first thing to know about the Moonside Lamp One, is that it’s bright enough to use as a bedside reading lamp or mood light, but not much else. It’s not meant to light up your room, but instead, to act as an accent light. Fortunately, it does this job very well thanks to its dynamic multi-LED color zones and smartphone app.

The Moonside app allows you to power the Lamp One on or off, change the brightness level, set the color, create a custom color scheme, enable motion scenes, and more. By far, my favorite part was the selection of motion scenes. They range from mimicking a fire, to crazy blinking Christmas lights, and tranquil transitions between colors.

What impressed me the most is how smooth the transitions were between the colors as well as some of the more unique modes that I have trouble finding the words to describe. Truly, you just have to see the Moonside Lamp One in action. It’s like a lava lamp for the modern generation.

Despite all my praise, there were some areas that the Lamp One could use some improvement. The app is clean and a little too simplistic. It can be confusing at first to know what section of the app does what. Plus, it took me a few tries to realize you needed to long press on the lamp to access the options, because a tap only toggles it on or off.

Also, while there are many modes to choose from, I would have preferred if they were shown more compactly in the app to make it easier to browse, as well as providing more customization. I would love the option to open up the moving scenes and change the colors being used, or even a way to create custom ones and save them for later.

Finally, one of the most essential features for me is Google Assistant integration. While the Moonside Lamp One has this feature, it was not intuitive to set up. There are several complaints about the Wi-Fi features on the Amazon page, and I’m almost certain it is due to how convoluted it is to set up.

In my experience, I connected it to the Wi-Fi network and the lamp lit up green to confirm, yet I could not control it using Google Assistant or with the Google Home app. I went through the process five times before reaching out to Moonside where they provided me with these steps to fix it.

The solution was to toggle back to Bluetooth mode after connecting to Wi-Fi and then switch back to Wi-Fi. Afterward, the lamp will reboot and should show the green light again to confirm the connection with the Wi-Fi network. The process takes about 30 seconds to complete and finally fixed my issue. Having to swap back and forth after connecting to Wi-Fi is hardly intuitive, but at least it resolves the problem.

Final thoughts

There’s a lot to love about the Moonside Lamp One. It’s lightweight, has a clean design, and offers unique colorful moving scenes with seamless transitions. My only criticisms would be that the app could use some more features, Wi-Fi could be less frustrating to set up, and I wish it was a little cheaper given those first two complaints.

Regardless, it’s a fantastic mood lamp if you don’t mind only using the preset modes and don’t need it to light up your room.

Checking out the INMOTION V5 electric unicycle

0

With prices of used vehicles showing no signs of coming down from the stratosphere, and given that gas prices are subject to volatility, it can be quite costly to “get around”.

Electric cars are becoming more popular as are electric bicycles and scooters. And though they may be a bit pricey up front, the long-term cost of ownership is cheaper.

There are plenty of good options to consider for driving (or riding) a few miles at a time but what about the local back and forth? What about taking the dog for a run? Or getting back and forth between school and the dorm?

While the early 2010’s saw a steep rise in interest for “hoverboards”, the next decade may be just as fun for people with electric unicycles. Why? They’re relatively lightweight, easy to carry, and work well for getting a few miles in at a time.

I had previously never spent any time with an electric unicycle (EUC) but that recently changed with the arrival of the INMOTION V5.

Priced about $400 now, the INMOTION V5 has been around for more than a few years. And while I’ve slept on the idea of using one of these for some time, it’s starting to make sense for someone who works less than two miles from home.

As I started to look into this space I’ve learned that the V5 is more of an entry-level unit. That’s fine for me, honestly, because I’m still getting the feel for this one. I cannot imagine spending more money on one of these at this point.

Suffice it to say, even though this one is aimed at beginners, it takes a bit of time and patience to figure it out. It’s tougher to master than the two-wheel hoverboard stuff that was once the big rage.

I took the INMOTION V5 out of the box and charged it up for a few hours as I wanted to make sure there was plenty of power to help me kick the proverbial tire. It takes around 3.5 hours to charge from zero to full.

Flipping the paddle feet out and attempting to stand on it, I used a wall and table to try and balance myself. My goal in the first day(s) was to get across the office (about 15 feet) without falling off. I’ll be honest here and tell you now that I am still doing my best to stay on it for more than ten seconds.

Although there are a couple of pads on the sides of the wheel, you’ll still feel a degree of pressure against your calves. At least that’s the case as I work myself up to long range rides.

I’ve been lucky enough to practice my riding in an area where I can hop off quickly and safely. Were I to try this anywhere else, I’d certainly have pads on my knees and elbows; I truly should have a helmet on as it is.

Thus far the InMotion V5 has been able to take the bumps and dumps in stride. It’s picked up a couple of scuffs and battle damage, but otherwise, it’s handling things quite well.

This unicycle is rated to get up to 12.5mph with a range of about 12 miles on a full charge. Once I get this thing down, I am excited to use it while the weather cooperates. I’ll be able to get back and forth to work on nice days.

The InMotion V5 weighs about 25 pounds which looks about right for its size. And thanks to its handle at the top, I can bring it indoors to the garage and office without hassle.

I cannot speak to how the full INMOTION portfolio is, but I do think the V5 is a decent unit with some weird details. At the risk of calling it a “knock off”, I did find it to be odd in the area of firmware. Powering it on, for instance, you hear the same sound that comes with plugging a USB device into a PC. And when you have to jump off or end up taking a spill, you’ll get some voice that seems to correct you in broken English.

I look forward to spending more time with the INMOTION V5 as it has fairly interesting specifications for the price. It’s rated to handle slopes of 18 degrees so that’s pretty much everywhere I intend to use it.

Thanks to its IP55 rating I feel confident knowing I’ll be able to get home quickly and safely in the event of a light rain. And as days get shorter and fall sets in, I’ll also appreciate having the headlight and red taillight.

There are other models in the INMOTION lineup with bigger batteries, larger wheels, faster speeds, and support for higher degree slopes. The V5F is the next step up from this model and comes in around $700.

If you’re new to electric unicycles and weigh less than 265lbs, you may want to check this one out. I can see this being quite helpful on campus or for people who have large areas to cover as part of their work day. Or, if you’re like me, and don’t work all that far from home, it can be a great way to “cut costs at the pump”.

You can learn more about the INMOTION V5 at the manufacturer’s website or Amazon where it’s available to purchase.

iMyFone MirrorTo: Share your phone screen to PC

0

Screen mirroring, or casting of your mobile phone, to the bigger screen of your PC is a niche market, but it’s one that iMyFone is trying to tackle. It’s a unique situation, but having your phone projected onto a bigger monitor can be a good tool.

What is iMyFone MirrorTo?

The iMyFone MirrorTo Android screen sharing tool is a dedicated PC app that links your phone and computer. Your phone screen and its contents are then mirrored onto your PC monitor. Taking a sub-7″ device and enlarging it to your laptop or PC monitor makes a huge difference. Whether you want play mobile games on a PC or just looking at photos on a TV, MirrorTo duplicates that output on the larger display.

How’s it work?

You need just a few steps to get iMyFone MirrorTo working. First, you need the program download from iMyFone’s website: https://www.imyfone.com/screen-mirror/.

If you haven’t installed a Windows application before, then where have you been hiding? Those that have will be familiar with the installation wizard to walk you through the .exe implementation on your PC.

Once installed, MirrorTo will instruct you to plug in your Android device via USB. The application scans to see if it has the settings to provide the connection automatically. Most likely, you will have to tweak the first requirement of having USB-debugging enabled on your Android phone or tablet. The wizard easily walks you through this process in the Android OS Settings and you should then be good to go forward.

The second setting you may have to change is also suggested if needed. For my Pixel 6, USB connections default to simply charging only. To get iMyFone MirrorTo to “see” your phone, you may have to tap the persistent notification in the shade drop-down. Here you need to change the connection type to PTP or MTP to work properly.

Does it suit this need?

Absolutely. iMyFone MirrorTo performs exactly as described when in daily use. When you need that Android app but on a larger screen like your computer monitor, this desktop solution has you covered. But why would I need this?

iMyFone features a few usage cases I’d thought of and a few I hadn’t. MirrorTo would be a great tool while live streaming on YouTube or video conferencing. You can “share” your screen and then also have your Android device available to those watching as well. Think about what it might be like to live stream TikTok on PC. It’s a lot easier to gather around the computer monitor than to crowd a phone when laughing at memes and recipes.

Teaching is another case I hadn’t thought about. I could easily see this being used in a classroom as an extension of a visual demonstration to the students. Maybe it’s just using it as a simple note projection or working out complex algebra, but this MirrorTo could offer a solution.

Go get MirrorTo

MirrorTo can be downloaded for free from the iMyFone website for free. This gives you a limited, but useless toolkit at no cost. If you’d like to unlock the full pro version, the upgrade will cost you a minimum of $3.33 per month if you pay a year in advance. There’s also a quarterly option for $8.31 per month or $9.95 if you’d rather go month to month.

MeCool KM2 Plus TV with Android TV review

0

MeCool has recently had a run of Android TV and Google TV devices. The company has an array of options in its lineup now with the latest addition being the KM2 Plus streaming box. This new Android TV unit has some perks over some of the other streamers from MeCool.

Let’s take a closer look at the device.

Design

The MeCool KM2 Plus is a fairly simple box with a matte black finish and silver trimming. The front has a few status LEDs indicating the IR reader, network processes, and power. On top of the box is a silver MeCool logo.

Around the left side of the MeCool KM2 Plus are some inputs. This includes a USB-A 2.0, USB-A 3.0, and a microSD slot. The back of the unit houses several other ports. You’ll find AV and optical audio inputs. There is also an ethernet jack, HDMI out, and DC power port.

Performance and Software

The MeCool KM2 Plus runs Android TV 11 and handles it very well. While I’d prefer the latest Google TV like the KD3 TV stick, we also know Google is slowly rolling that certification process and simply may have not been an option for MeCool at launch.

Otherwise, any previous Android TV users will find themselves right at home. You get Google’s intuitive UI home screen that leverage Google Assistant for content recommendations and Voice Search. The UI is still crisp, clean, and modern for TV use.

One essential upgrade for the KM2 Plus over the mentioned KD3 stick is double the internal storage. With 16GB of mass storage, consumers have a lot more wiggle room after initially installing all their streaming options. This can still be expanded via the USB and SD slots, but having that built-in just makes more sense.

I also have to mention how good the included remote is for the MeCool KM2 Plus. It’s based on Google’s new OEM reference model and is one of my favorites. The button layout is intuitive and has dedicated options for Bookmarks menu options, power, volume, and Google Assistant.

Conclusion

MeCool makes the KM2 Plus fairly competitive with Roku and Apple TV at $90. If you are in the market for a streamer and want the Android ecosystem, the KM2 Plus is compelling. The great remote and the full array of expansion ports make it one of the more complete Google-powered units on the market.

This model can be purchased directly from MeCool or via Amazon. You can currently get 15% off with our code: 15Sep at MeCool.
