Nanoleaf Launches Blocks: Modular Lighting That Turns Your Walls into Functional Art

0

Nanoleaf has introduced a sparkling update to their smart lighting lineup with the launch of Nanoleaf Blocks, merging improved aesthetics and functionality. These fresh modular LED light panels, priced starting at $199.99, deliver edge-to-edge lighting that sidesteps the usual woes of hot spots and dark edges, offering a smoother and more even glow that makes the walls feel a bit friendlier.

During a lively livestream event on YouTube, the company announced that the Blocks are now available for preorder, with shipping anticipated in October. Attendees of the IFA tech show in Berlin can get a firsthand look at these exciting panels.

Taking customization up a level, the Nanoleaf Blocks consist of square panels that users can mix and match in two sizes. Personalizing setups is a breeze with handy add-ons like pegboards, shelves, and textured light panels. Now, your wall art can serve double duty as a stylish showcase for beloved collectibles—whether that’s an army of Funko Pop figures or a tiny, rebellious houseplant.

One key enhancement is the upgraded lighting. Edge-to-edge illumination ensures each panel radiates a steady, diffuse light that spills beyond its borders, gently lighting up the surrounding wall for a cozy atmosphere. This significant improvement aims to eliminate the uneven lighting some past users might have grumbled about.

On the smart home front, Nanoleaf Blocks are ready for the modern age. They support Wi-Fi connectivity and work harmoniously with popular platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. A future update for Matter compatibility is in the pipeline, but the company is holding off until the smart home standard can cater to dynamic lighting scenes—something that Nanoleaf fans have come to love. For hands-on types, a physical controller allows users to manage power, brightness, and lighting scenes directly.

Pricing begins with the Squares Smarter Kit, which includes six square panels at $199.99. For those seeking maximum customization, the Combo XL Smarter Kit combines various panels, pegboards, and shelves for $249.99.

Extra accessories like shelves, pegboards, and textured panels can be snagged for $29.99 each. Just a friendly reminder: if you’re installing pegboards and shelving, a drill will be your trusty sidekick, so plan your layout wisely to avoid regrettable holes in your wall.

On the software side, Nanoleaf is upgrading its desktop app with fresh features for the Blocks and other products. The Orchestrator feature, which found its way out of beta following CES, enhances the music-syncing capabilities of Nanoleaf lights. The lights will not just pulse to the beat; they will also create color palettes and animations that mirror the vibe of each tune. Another delightful addition, Scenescapes, pairs specific lighting scenes with audio themes—imagine cozying up to the ambience of ocean waves or a crackling fireplace for an immersive experience.

For anyone curious, the Nanoleaf Blocks are available for preorder on the company’s official website and will soon hit major retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, and The Home Depot when they ship in October.

Aqara Unveils Next-Gen Smart Home Innovations

0

At IFA 2024, Aqara showcased an impressive array of smart home innovations that promise to make homes safer, more energy-efficient, and better connected. This collection reflects Aqara’s commitment to enhancing the smart home experience on a global scale.

Leading the charge in home security is the Camera Hub G5 Pro, Aqara’s sleek outdoor surveillance solution. With a 4MP lens and features like True Color Night Vision, this camera doesn’t just watch the comings and goings—it can recognize faces, vehicles, pets, and, interestingly enough, packages that might be up to no good. It’s equipped with flexible installation options, thanks to its Wi-Fi and Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities.

With end-to-end video encryption and compatibility across major platforms such as Apple HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings, the G5 Pro is just as serious about security as a bouncer at a nightclub. Plus, it doubles as a Zigbee hub, making sure your outside world can play nicely with your home network.

Aqara didn’t stop there; they also introduced the Garage Door Controller T2 Kit. Usually the forgotten underdog of home security, garages are critical access points, so this kit allows smooth control and monitoring of up to two sectional garage doors. With integration into major platforms and functionality through geofencing, voice commands, and clever automation, users can secure their garages like they would their front doors—because who doesn’t want peace of mind while binge-watching their favorite series?

The preventive measures continue with the Valve Controller T1 and an alarmingly loud Smoke Detector. The Valve Controller plays the hero by automatically shutting off water or gas in the event of leaks, perfect for those who might habitually forget to check their pipes. The Smoke Detector sports an 85-decibel alarm, a sound that cuts through the chaos, ensuring everyone knows when to evacuate—preferably not during taco night.

On the energy management front, Aqara has made strides in Europe with the new H2 EU Wall Switches. These nifty gadgets work in multiple configurations, including light, dimmer, and shutter options. Designed with versatility in mind, they utilize both Thread for Matter compatibility and Zigbee. For those tackling DIY projects, these switches are easy to retrofit into existing setups, meaning no one has to pull their hair out over complicated installations.

Aqara’s lighting lineup has also brightened up with the LED Bulb T2 series. Featuring both RGB CCT and simpler CCT versions, these bulbs can create everything from bright, productive spaces to cozy atmospheres perfect for movie nights. Flexibility and longevity are key selling points here—though one might argue that endless options can lead to a overzealous decision-making process.

Strengthening interoperability is another key move by Aqara, especially with the Advanced Matter Bridging through the Hub M3. This feature allows users to sync complex automations across platforms, effectively making smart home communication smoother than a jazz saxophonist on a late-night album.

Aqara has also partnered up with Home Assistant for streamlined integrations, providing users of this open-source platform with added convenience. A notable innovation comes from teaming up with Tesla, allowing users to integrate their electric vehicles into Aqara’s smart ecosystem, helping to schedule charging during off-peak hours—a lifesaver for night owls.

Finally, there’s the Voice Mate H1. This microphone accessory is for those who crave privacy and convenience. It only comes alive when physically activated, ensuring no accidental eavesdropping. Once switched on, it presents Aqara Copilot, adding an extra layer of interaction for users who want an attentive assistant in their daily lives without sacrificing privacy.

DJI Debuts Ridiculously Affordable $199 Neo Selfie Drone

0

The popular drone maker, DJI has unveiled its most affordable drone at IFA Berlin – the DJI Neo. Coming at just a $199 price tag, the DJI Neo can do almost everything the $350 HoverAir X1 can and so much more. DJI packed some of its advanced drone capabilities in the Neo, making it just a perfect drone for the price point.

The DJI Neo is geared toward the vlogger, content creator, or anyone who wants an easy-to-use drone. This is the DJI’s most compact and lightest drone to date, weighing a mere 135 grams. The Neo seamlessly works via voice commands or you can simply connect it to your smartphone via the DJI Fly app and use the virtual joysticks up to a distance of 50 meters. Alternatively, you can also connect the DJI’s other drone accessories such as DJI Goggles 3, RC Motion 3, FPV Remote Controller 3, and DJI RC-N3 which increases the recording distance of the Neo to 10 km.

One of the interesting things is that the Neo comes with a return to home feature (RTH) feature, a similar feature found on the DJI’s high-end drones. DJI claims that the Neo will automatically return to the user’s palm once the shooting is completed.

The DJI Neo is equipped with a 12MP ½ image sensor, capable of capturing ultra-stabilised videos in up to 4k resolution at 30 frames per second. It has 22GB of internal storage and will easily store 40 minutes of high-resolution footage. You can easily transfer all the recorded videos to your phone via WiFi without the need for any cables. Unlike other DJI drones with a 6-axis gimbal, the Neo ships with a single-axis gimbal for stabilizing up/down motion only. However, this will surely affect the overall shot quality.

DJI’s Neo uses an AI object tracking feature to track the subject and keep them in focus, even during activities such as hiking, or cycling. Unfortunately, the drone doesn’t support obstacle avoidance, which is slightly disappointing.

On the positive side, you get a QuickShots feature which allows you to capture the shot with six different fly patterns: Circle, Dronie, Helix, Rocket, Spotlight, and Boomerang. The Neo has a very short flight time of up to 18 minutes. However, you can extend the flight time with two extra batteries that come with a combo model.

Narwal Freo Z Ultra: The AI-Powered Cleaner That Outsmarts Messes and Pets Alike

0

Narwal, known for shaking up the home cleaning game, has brought its latest gadget to the spotlight at IFA 2024 in Berlin. The Freo Z Ultra robot vacuum and mop is here to handle the messes that life throws your way, without asking for much in return—except for maybe a corner to charge in.

Packed with AI-driven features, the Freo Z Ultra ($1,499) knows how to navigate your home better than a cat avoiding bath time. Equipped with dual AI chips and 1200p RGB cameras, it effortlessly dodges everything from wayward toys to that ever-elusive sock hiding under the couch. With the precision to clean within a centimeter of objects, you can officially stop rearranging your furniture for this little helper. Privacy-conscious users will be happy to hear that all video data stays stored on the device, making it smart and secure.

But this robot isn’t just about avoiding obstacles—it’s got brains too. Its Proactive AI DirtSense 2.0 detects whether a spill needs vacuuming or mopping and adjusts accordingly. DirtSense 2.0 even focuses more on dirtier spots, so that suspicious ketchup splatter in the kitchen won’t be just a distant memory.

For pet owners, the Freo Z Ultra has you covered. With its Pet-Friendly Mode, it works around your pets’ naps, cleaning other areas first before returning to tackle the fur-filled zones. All this while keeping the noise down to 55-58dB—so no angry pets or roommates to deal with. The self-emptying dustbin only needs attention every 120 days, making it just about as low-maintenance as it gets.

Key Features of the Narwal Freo Z Ultra:

  • TwinAI Dodge Obstacle Avoidance: Dual AI chips and cameras that navigate your home with the grace of a cat slipping past an open door.
  • Proactive AI DirtSense™ 2.0: Knows when to vacuum and when to mop, targeting dirt like it’s got a personal vendetta against it.
  • AI-Adaptive Hot Water Mop: Adjusts temperature to deal with everything from everyday dirt to the kind of grime that has no business being there in the first place.
  • Pet-Friendly Mode: Works around your pets like a considerate roommate—no need to disturb Fido’s afternoon nap.
  • Ultra-Quiet Operation: At 55-58dB, it hums along quietly, giving your home a clean without the vacuum cleaner symphony.
  • Self-Emptying Station: Forget about emptying the dustbin for almost four months, giving you time to focus on more pressing matters—like finding that missing sock.

For those eager to get their hands on one, the Freo Z Ultra is available for presale in North America through Narwal’s website. The wait for smart, hassle-free cleaning just got a little shorter.

Level Up Your Wallet Game with ESR Gear’s Latest

0

ESR has established itself as one of the industry leaders in Apple accessories, consistently providing innovative and high-quality products. The company’s extensive lineup features a wide range of accessories, including chargers, base stations, and keyboard cases, meticulously designed to complement and enhance the user experience for the full range of Apple devices.

Recently, our team had the opportunity to thoroughly test and evaluate three exciting new options within the ESR Gear wallet lineup. These cutting-edge offerings boast seamless integration with MagSafe technology, further elevating the user’s interaction with their iPhone, while also harnessing the power of Apple’s advanced Find My Device network for added convenience and security.

Simply put, we like them quite a bit and think you would, too. Read on to learn more about what ESR has on offer for consumers in need of a new wallet.

ESR Gear HaloLock Wallet Stand

Let’s start with the two wallet offerings with the most shared DNA. HaloLock is ESR’s in-house name for MagSafe, and that’s present here on both the Geo Wallet Stand and the regular Wallet Stand.

The standard HaloLock Wallet Stand is no slouch, even with the omission ESR added into the Geo variant. The Wallet Stand has HaloLock magnets to take advantage of the MagSafe protocol, can hold your personal ID, and up to two other payment cards.

I have found the HaloLock Wallet Stand to be the perfect going out to drinks wallet. Sometimes a nicer dinner requires dress pants or slacks, and I prefer to minimize my pocket accessories as much as possible. Having the combo of my phone and only my essential cards in a single setup is fantastic.

I have my ID for adult beverages and my two go-to payment options, and they simply snap onto my phone. I’m never to leave home without anyway. Speaking of, the magnetic connection of the HaloLock Wallet Stand is very strong, and I never once felt like the wallet was in jeopardy of falling off my iPhone.

Lastly, as the name implies, there’s the additional thoughtfulness that the hinge mechanism is also strong enough for the HaloLock Wallet Stand to prop up your phone. This can be done in both landscape and portrait orientations and has come in hand to take FaceTime calls, or my favorite YouTube clips, while on the go.

Purchasing links for the ESR Gear HaloLock Geo Wallet Stand can be found from ESR directly or Amazon below. Full retail is $30 and it’s available in six colors: black, caramel, dark blue, gray, sky blue, and carbon fiber.

ESR Gear HaloLock Geo Wallet Stand

If you love everything about the HaloLock Wallet Stand but want some added piece of mind while traveling, then the Geo Wallet Stand variant is just what you are looking for. With a slight redesign of the front pocket and the addition of Apple Find My Device functionality, the Geo Wallet Stand knocks this out of the park.

You get the same amount of card storage, but you lose the dedicated ID slot. Your license for the next time you’re buying Daddy sodas will just need to take up a generic slot in the single cardholder on the front of the Geo Wallet Stand. This location has a nice, leather slide mechanism to “eject” the cards for easy access and sorting. The slide can be used as a holding loop as well.

Why only the one card slot for all three cards? That precious real estate was needed for the Find My Device hardware and internal battery. I love having the tracking ability built into a wallet. While I’ve never personally lost mine, it’s always been the dreaded scenario in my nightmares.

Adding the HaloLock Geo Wallet Stand to your Apple app is just like any accessory. If you’ve set up the AirTag, then this is a breeze. You double click the sync area on the inside of the wallet and you are pretty much good to go. You can give is a custom name and icon, after which, it shows in your Items tab the Find My application.

Battery life isn’t an issue either. The Geo Wallet Stand is rated for three months on a single charge and takes a little over an hour to fully fill the battery. The Find My Device app will also notify you when your battery is in need of refueling as well.

You can purchase the ESR Gear HaloLock Geo Wallet Stand from ESR directly or Amazon below. Full retail is $40 and it’s available in five colors: black, caramel, dark blue, grey, and carbon fiber.

ESR Gear Geo Wallet

Lastly, we have the latest entry to the ESR Gear wallet lineup. The newly launched Kickstarter for the ESR Geo Wallet is now live with estimated shipping to backers in September 2024. We’ve gotten an early look, and the world’s first bi-fold wallet with Find My Device support won’t disappoint.

Just like the ESR Geo Wallet Stand, the bi-fold version can easily be set up with Apple’s application, and the thought of losing your wallet forever is gone. Inside the Geo Wallet, you have a dedicated ID slot, five card slots, a divided cash pocket, and a neat small coin pocket.

Under the ID sleeve are the charging pins and battery pack for the Find My unit. The battery is rated to last up to five months and recharges in under two hours. Having this built into a traditional folding wallet fills a void you just haven’t seen in this market yet. Most are minimal options designed to also use MagSafe, like the HaloLock Geo Wallet Stand. Having an option that my Dad would still use is a huge win for ESR.

Hit the link below to become a backer and secure your ESR Geo Wallet. Pricing starts at around $50 and if you act now, the current entry level backing gets you the Geo Wallet Stand as a free add-on.
