0

U.S. Cellular just announced that they will be bringing three Android-powered HTC devices to their lineup next month in the form of the Wildfire S, Hero S, and Flyer tablet.  Bolstering an already-powerful smart phone roster, these three will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and blend nicely with the carrier’s Belief Project.

A quick primer on the two smart phones: The Hero S features a 4-inch Super LCD display with qHD resolution, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. The Wildfire S, on the other hand, comes with a 3.2-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera, and the usual mid-range Android offerings.

As far as pricing goes, the HTC Hero S will be $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate whereas the HTC Wildfire S will be $79.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate.  The 7-inch HTC Flyer will be available for $399.99 (EDIT) after a $100 mail-in rebate with a two-year contract and a $54.99 data plan.  Look for the launch dates to trickle in over the next few weeks!

Amazon Unveils $200 Kindle Fire eReader/Tablet for November 15

0

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is currently on stage in New York, giving us a rundown of all things Kindle.  After looking back at the previous four year of success, he is starting to unveil new products and features.  On such feature is expected to be the hotly-anticipated Kindle Fire tablet, running Android.  We’ll be back with more information once it’s made public, but we have a pretty solid idea as to what’s in store.

According to a Bloomberg story hitting the wires within the last hour, the Amazon Kindle Fire will debut with a $199 price tag.  The arrival date is November 15th, but you may want to pre-order yours.  Sales will be ridiculous.

The Kindle Fire will have a 7-inch display and sell for $199, compared with $499 for Apple’s cheapest iPad, Amazon executives said in interviews with Bloomberg Businessweek. The device, a souped-up version of the Kindle electronic- book reader, will run on Google Inc.’s Android software, the Seattle-based company said.

UPDATE: What does the Amazon Kindle Fire have?

  • Access to Prime Instant Video – 11,000 movies and TV shows commercial-free at no extra cost.
  • Android is under the hood (multi-tasking) however it’s not very obvious… or readily accessible (yet).
  • Direct access to the MP3 store with 17 million songs, some as low as 69¢ a piece.
  • 7-inch IPS display, dual-core processor, 14.6 ounces
  • Gorilla Glass covering the LCD display
  • Access to anything/everything Amazon, including music, magazines, apps, shows, movies, and more.
  • Delete it or retrieve it whenever you want, thanks to the cloud storage service.
  • Whispersync across the board, even on TV shows.  Pick up where you left off!

Toshiba Announces 7-inch Thrive for December

0

Toshiba has announced today that a new 7-inch variant of their Thrive tablet will be arriving in December, bringing a new level of portability to their growing Android lineup.  Available in two versions (16GB or 32GB) the tablets will run Android 3.2 Honeycomb and feature a 1280×800 HD display, a dual-core Tegra 2 chipset, and two cameras (5-megapixel rear, 2-megapixel front).

The 7-inch Thrive looks to copy its predecessor in nearly every facet, including the Micro USB, Micro HDMI and a Micro SD card slots.  Additionally, the tablet also features the same,  Easy Grip finish and relatively thicker appearance.  Even though this doesn’t have quite the same sex appeal as the AT200 Excite, we’re happy to see another hardware player expanding  their Android offerings.

Look for pricing to arrive in the coming weeks as the 4th quarter gets underway!  How much would you be willing to pay for a Toshiba Thrive 7-inch?  We’re hearing under $400 but that’s only logical if you ask us.

AT&T Set to Offer $49.99 Xperia PLAY 4G on September 18

0

AT&T is set to finally offer the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play later this month, putting the phone on sale at $49.99 with two-year service agreements.  Tapping their iteration with a subtle name change, Ma Bell has decided that XPERIA Play 4G is a more moniker.  Like its Verizon counterpart the phone runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and features a 4-inch display, 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera, and VGA forward-facing camera.  About that 4G suffix, it’s only AT&T’s HSPA+ network and not the 4G LTE stuff we’d rather see.  Nonetheless, the $50 price point should help move a few of these stealth blue “PlayStation Phones”.

The Xperia PLAY 4G has access to more than 150 games optimized for the special hardware and comes with a number of pre-loaded titles (Dungeon Defenders, Asphalt 6 Adrenaline, Star Battalion, Madden NFL 11, The Sims 3, Tower Bloxx: My City, and Crash Bandicoot).
