With Hydro Edge, we’re keeping those core values while taking performance to a new level.”

Smart Sonic Receiver Technology

Hydro Edge features Kyocera’s proprietary, award-winning Smart Sonic Receiver technology, which eliminates the need for a traditional speaker in a handset by using vibrations to transmit sounds directly to the eardrum. Placing the phone in contact with the general area of the ear creates clear sound even in very noisy environments, such as construction sites, sporting events, concerts and playgrounds. Removing the traditional speaker eliminates the need for a speaker cavity in the phone’s housing, enabling cleaner aesthetics and enhanced waterproofing. The technology received multiple “Best of” awards when it was introduced at CTIA Wireless 2012, the wireless industry’s largest U.S. trade show.
To support the growing need for data, Sprint is rolling out a new 3G/4G network designed to provide faster data speeds, improved call quality and easier connectivity. Sprint expects customers to benefit with better wireless signal strength, in-building coverage and fewer drops/blocks. Samsung Galaxy S4 review (video)

Samsung captivated and fascinated the world with the epic Galaxy S3. With over 40 million units sold, it’s clear that they did something right. Samsung learned that combining high-end hardware and custom software really helps to make a phone successful. Following the success of the S3, let’s take a look at Samsung’s next big thing, the Galaxy S4. Now, there is a lot to love about this device, Samsung has once again packed in every bit of cutting-edge technology into a slim 7.9mm device. But the real question is whether this device will retain the same popularity as the S3. Samsung has defiantly payed close attention to Apple’s iterative upgrade schedule. Meaning, the Galaxy S4 adds a very minimal design change from the S3, although still packs some serious horsepower under the new 1080p display.

SONY DSC

“It’s Still Plastic, but i’m okay with it.”

From a strictly “looks” standpoint, the average consumer will not notice the difference between an S3 and an S4. Although place the phone in your hand and the difference become apparent. It’s much sharper than the S3, offering a flat back and relatively flat sides, the phone feels a bit more high-end. I find it very difficult to say this hardware is “high-end”, especially when you compare it to its two major competitors, the iPhone 5 and HTC One. It almost not even an opinion at this point, aluminum and glass hold a higher value than plastic. But plastic or not, the phone still feels great and we get a removable battery.

SONY DSC

“Pixels, pixels, and more pixels.”

Samsung has always held their head above the water when it comes to their displays. Offering the latest resolution and screen technologies at the time. The S4 is no different, with a gorgeous 1080p AMOLED display, it really is beautiful. Most complain about the brightness on AMOLED displays, but I found it completely suitable in just about any lighting situation. The 5″ screen squeezes in 441 pixels-per-in (ppi), which leaves a single pixel abstruse to the naked eye. Thanks to Samsung’s clever workings, the screen grew in size, while the device did not.

SONY DSC

“Full performance all in a day’s battery.”

Lets face it, when we heard the rumors of an 8-core mobile processor, we all got a bit excited on the inside. When Samsung announced the full specs for the US variants of the S4, ever feature seemed to match except the processor. Samsung decided to swap the international variants 8-core processor for a quad-core snapdragon 600. Disappointing? A bit, but use this phone for 30-seconds and try to tell me its slow. It blows the S3 out of the water and paired with Android 4.2, this phone soars. In addition to the speed, Samsung has once again managed to jam a huge battery, 2600 mah, into a small chassis. After a full day of 6 constantly pulling email accounts, hardcore tweeting, and full brightness, I ended with an average of 30%.

SONY DSC

“TouchWiz is… good?!”

As an Android enthusiast, I prefer my device to be running a stock build of Android, manufacturer skins? No thank you. While that just my personal preference, when review devices I like to keep the device as they were out of the box, and well, I had a really good experience. Samsung has tailored their applications, refined their user interface and the result is a very unified, cohesive experience. Whereas previous versions of TouchWiz carried “cartoon-like” traits, this version is very modern and much lighter on the processor.

Bundled with the Galaxy S4 are a few Samsung applications, more specifically, WatchOn and Samsung HUB. WatchOn works in conjunction with the IR blaster on the top of the device. Using Peel’s technology, you can use the S4 as a universal “smart” remote, offering more than just volume and channel control. WatchOn actually works to replace your horrible TV guide system. Using a series of algorithms, Samsung is able to locate TV shows and movies that you watch frequently, as well as recommend similar programs. Furthermore, instead of glaring at a list of 1000+ channels, you can see 15-20 personalized shows that are available right then. The newly designed Samsung HUB was also a breath of fresh air compared to previous versions. Instead of 4-or-5 separate “HUB” apps, you now have one application to host all of them. Allowing you to quickly purchase games, movies, music, and books. To be honest, the Samsung HUB was still an application I could never find myself using, it looks great, but the purpose just is not there for me.

SONY DSC

“Samsung, shoot.”

In today’s day in age, a phone’s camera is usually the only camera most people have on them all the time. With that, a good camera has really become a vital feature in every smartphone. As far as specs go, the S4 boasts a 13MP camera with 1080p video recording, and the best part of all, the camera looks as good as it sounds. Photos were rich and vibrant, with plenty depth-of-field. The macro capabilities were pretty intense, I could get much closer to the subject and retain great detail and sharpness. Besides the optics, Samsung has also included a few modes to create some unique shots. Drama Mode allows you to take one image with multiple instances of your subject, it sounds great in theory, but my results looked more like the same item blurred four times. Night Mode was a nice feature, it lowers the devices shutter speed to compensate for low-light situations and it really worked well. Other modes include a revamped Panorama, Beauty Mode, and Auto.

SONY DSC

“Gimmick-ly useful”.

You cannot mention the Galaxy S4 without speaking of the new IR sensors. These sensors allow you to manipulate and interact with the phone in a more unique manor. Straight from the Galaxy Note 2, air view has made its way to the S4 in a very interesting way. Instead of using a S Pen to hover over the screen, you can now place your finger just about the display to reveal information without actually tapping into the application. This was one of the more useful features, especially in the calendar. Air Gesture was another useful feature that seemed to work 9/10 times, allowing you to scroll by waving your hand over the Samsung logo. Then of course, there is eye scrolling Smart Scroll, a feature which literally coins the term gimmick. Smart Scroll lets you awkwardly tilt your head to scroll through webpages, it sounds cools, but it looks ridiculous and worked 2/10 of the times.

Overall, the screen is great, the phone is fast, and the battery life is suitable. As a successor to one of the most popular Android devices ever, the Galaxy S4 makes a great upgrade from any phone. There are zero outstanding flaws with the S4, although it is far perfect. The still plastic build does creek and add an overall “cheap” feeling to phone. But without a doubt, the pros outweigh the cons and as they did last year, Samsung has once again put together a very solid device.

Like it or not, the Facebook Phone is here

After all that speculation, the Facebook Phone is here. And it’s not just one device. In fact, it can be the device you have in your pocket today. The Facebook Home app experience will be available as a download from Google Play so that you can install it on your existing phone.

Click here to check out the HTC First photo gallery!

facebook_home_device_support

So what is the Facebook Home experience? In a few words, it’s Chat Heads, Cover Feed, Notifications, and Apps. While AT&T and HTC would to see you spend a few hundred dollars over the next few years, Facebook could probably care less. No, the social media giant would rather just see you draw ever closer to their services.

Speaking of services, here’s what to expect in a Facebook Home experience:

Cover feedA constant, fresh stream of photos and updates from your newsfeed, cover feed is always present when you wake up your phone.  It lets you stay up-to-date on your friends’ latest activities in real-time, all the time.  You can swipe through to see more photos and updates, double tap to “like” a post and comment right from cover feed.

Notifications: Notifications from apps and friends appear right on your home screen.  It’s easier to see when you have a missed call, calendar reminder or new message. Open a notification with a double tap or clear them away to see your Cover Feed.

Chat HeadsThe mobile messenger lets you jump in and out of conversations while you do other things, like watch a video and browse the web.  Reply right from chat heads, or move them around if you’re not ready to respond. Plus you can send and receive texts and Facebook messages from the same spot.

App Launcher:  See your favorite apps and post right to Facebook from the same spot. You choose what’s on your app launcher—press and hold an app then drag it anywhere.

Instagram:  HTC First is the only phone that comes with Instagram pre-loaded.

Indeed this is an experience that could be summed up as a Launcher or home screen interface. Aptly named as Home, it functions as a direct link to Facebook at all times. Starting from the moment you power that screen on to the time you turn it off again, Facebook will be ever-present and alert. Messages can come in across the top of your screen, chat lets you get in touch with friends and family, and you’ve got Instagram filters to touch up your pictures of fingernails/hair/sushi/One Direction.

Facebook expects that the Facebook Home software will be updated once a month and will improve with each iteration. Looking down the road a few months, Facebook Home will be made available for tablets as well.

facebook_home_partners_launch

While AT&T and HTC have collaborated on the HTC First, there are a number of other partners lined up to work with Facebook. Among those mentioned today are Samsung, Sony, Huawei, EE, Orange, Lenovo, and ZTE.  We don’t expect AT&T to lock down the U.S. industry on Facebook Home devices so look for additional carriers to climb on board.

[pullquote4 quotes=”true” align=”center” bgColor=”#7284cc” textColor=”#ffffff”]We designed Home to be the next version of Facebook. But we also wanted to do something more. We wanted to reimagine the way we all use computing devices to make us more connected and bring us closer to the people we care about.[/pullquote4]

If you think this is all a little bit too heavy handed, consider that this is what Facebook envisions for the platform. Speaking at today’s event, Mark Zuckerberg advised that he feels this is the best Facebook experience you can get. When asked if there is potential for an iOS version of this, the CEO said, “We have a great relationship with Apple. Anything that happens with Apple is going to happen with partnership.”

Get used to it, this is the Facebook experience of the future. It just happens to start with phones.

HTC First announced for April 12 with $99 price tag

HTC today announced that the first Facebook Home device, the aptly named HTC First, will be available starting from April 12. The HTC First (formerly Myst) features a  a 4.3-inch 720p HD display, a dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 4G LTE support, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, a suite of Facebook-related applications,

Touted as the “first set of phones” to feature the Facebook Home experience, the HTC First centers around the software and services more than the hardware. Designed to be big, but not too big, it’s supposed to feel comfortable and speak to who you are. The HTC First will be available in four color options:black, white, red and pale blue.

htc_first

For those of you who want to try the Facebook Home experience but don’t need a new device, you might be able to download and install the app on your own phone. A number of devices are expected to launch with support for the Facebook Home app which will also be available starting April 12.

Andy Rubin passes the Android torch to Sundar Pichai

Andy Rubin demos a very early build of Android

There’s some rather large news coming out of Mountain View today as Android lead Andy Rubin has decided to “hand over the reigns”. The word comes direct from Google CEO Larry Page who tells us Rubin will start a new chapter at Google.

In Andy’s place, Sundar Pichai will handle the Android team, also working with the Chrome side of things. Looking ahead, we might expect to see the two operating systems fall closer together with potentially more crossover.

[blockquote align=”center” cite=”Google CEO, Larry Page” citeLink=”http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2013/03/update-from-ceo.html”%5DGoing forward, Sundar Pichai will lead Android, in addition to his existing work with Chrome and Apps. Sundar has a talent for creating products that are technically excellent yet easy to use—and he loves a big bet.[/blockquote]

We’re anxious to see what Andy Rubin ends up working on next; he seems like he’s got plenty of freedom and clout at this point.

Also worth noting in today’s news are a few milestones for the Android platform:

  • Global partnership of over 60 manufacturers
  • More than 750 million devices have been activated globally
  • 25 billion apps have now been downloaded from Google Play

V-Moda Crossfade M-100 review

I don’t think I’ve ever considered a pair of headphones to be anything other than mere audio accessories before, but upon opening the Crossfade M-100 from V-Moda, sexy is the only word that came to mind.

AG-CrossfadeWhile I don’t proclaim to have anything other than a perfunctory level of knowledge about firearms, these headphones immediately elicited thoughts of the craftsmanship and attention to build quality that I assume goes into a well-made Smith & Wesson. Now that that’s out of my system, I won’t subject you to cheesy puns about how the sound blasts your eardrums or that you should pull the trigger and buy them — I just wanted to let you know that they’re gorgeously well-made, not the least bit gaudy, and light enough to be everyday practical. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on the matte black color option, complete with Kevlar cabling, metal accents, and military-grade (MIL-STD-810) quality testing.

The sound is incredibly lush. The dynamic range is well represented via the Crossfade’s terrifically effective noise isolating cans. Often, when reviewing headphones or audio accessories, I find that the lows are lacking while the highs sizzle, or that the mids are muddy while the bass is overpowering. These are tuned to near-perfection — clear, wide, and precise. Featuring a 50MM dual-diaphragm driver, ergo soft memory foam, and a collapsible “cliqfold” hinge — they’re comfortable, unobtrusive, and durable.

Heading to V-Moda’s site will give you more details on how to customize the interchangeable metal shield kits, something I’m content to do without. I do, however, find myself defaulting to the included SpeakEasy cable for phone-calls and immediately fell in love with the exoskeleton hard case (also included). If you’d rather share your music with others than make and receive phone calls, V-Moda has also included their SharePlay audio cable that allows you to do just that. Are these probably going to marketed heavily (if not strictly) to the audiophile crowd? Sure, but allow me to be blunt : For my money (and that’s ~$300), these are THE BEST over-ear headphones on the market.

Technical Details

  • What’s included: Crossfade M-100, Exoskeleton carry case, caribener, Kevlar reinforced SpeakEasy Microphone control cable, Kevlar reinforced SharePlay audio cable, 1/4″ pro adapter, V-CORK (2), instant six-star support code, V-MODA Sticker
  • Type: Over-Ear Circumaural
  • Frequency Response: 5 – 30,000 Hz
  • Sensitivity: 103 dB @ 1kHz 1mW
  • Microphone Sensitivity: -42dB @ 1kHz
  • Impedance: 32Ω
  • Weight: 280g

Google today announced something similar with Google+ sign-in, however there’s nary a trace of that added junk. Today, Google debuts its Facebook Login and Open Graph killer.

Google+ Sign-In lets users sign in to your Android app with their existing Google credentials, and bring along their Google+ info for an upgraded experience. In addition to basic authentication, today’s release includes features that can accelerate both app downloads and engagement.

Now, instead of asking you to log-in with Facebook or create an account, you can bring your Google+ profile along for the ride. Once tied to the app, your credentials are synchronized and you’re off and running. A number of developers have already been using this feature, including Fancy, Flixter, OpenTable, Shazam, and USAToday.

So what about all the times you log in with an app and favorite a song, station or movie? Will that show up for all of your circles? Only if you want it to. You can customize who sees what and how often.

Users’ app activities will only be visible to the Google+ circles they specify (if any), and they’ll only appear when they’re relevant. Putting users in control, and not spraying their stream builds trust in your app, and encourages meaningful sharing.

Another great feature is that users will find that many websites can lead to a seamless and even more better expression. Log in with your Google+ account on one of these websites and you’ll be asked if you’d like to install the Android app – instantly.

It’s pretty obvious that this move will lead to more Google+ adoption and peel away at Facebook’s strangle on social login. This is an uphill battle, sure, but Google is positioning themselves quite nicely. I don’t know about you but I really enjoy a simple login experience. Conversely, I cannot stand how many apps and games tell me that my friends just got a new high score or that they just listened to a specific song.  Here’s to Google doing it right.
