iHome K2 Connected all-in-one multipurpose home speaker is one worth checking out(Review)

Bluetooth speakers and portable batteries. We do many reviews on both but this is the first time I had the opportunity to review the best of both worlds in a single package. iHome has been a mainstay with mobile accessories getting its start in 2005. In its first year in existence it became the number choice for speakers with the popularity of digital music and the iPod. Just over ten years later and iHome is still rocking the accessory market with a full line of products of alarm clocks, clock radios, portable speakers, and more. They are a globally recognized brand and can be found at Best Buy, Walmart, and Target.

Sometimes when we see brands everywhere we immediately think “generic” but iHome’s Kineta K2 iKN105 all in one speaker is anything but that. It has a slot built-in for a portable battery, a Bluetooth connection for your smartphone or tablet, a large clock with an alar, six presets for FM radio, and the ability to work as a speakerphone.

20151229_104118_HDR

[spacer color=”264C84″ icon=”fa-music”]

Design

With over ten years of design experience, iHome knows how to fit tons of features into a compact package. The iHome Kineta K2 is a full-featured smart speaker that is built for every home. The portable battery that comes with the K2 has a slot on the left side of the speaker specifically to house it. The K-Cell itself is a solid metal battery than has enough power to recharge most phones one time with a 2600mAh capacity.

The speaker is made from a solid and durable matte plastic, and comes with a plug-in antenna, AC adapter, K-Cell battery, and a USB charging cable. There is a full sized USB port on the side of the speaker to charge one smartphone or tablet. The front houses a clock with the month and date.

All of the controls are touch based with a panel that covers it on the top of the device. This will help prevent actual buttons from wearing out or dirt and debris from slipping inside of cracks and crevices. It’s not a thing most people think about, but long term this should make the speaker last for many years to come.

Usage

My kitchen doesn’t have clocks built the appliances, as I have a stove and oven with eight gas burners. In general most stoves and ovens do have a clock built in, and when I am cooking having a clock is vital to knowing when to add certain ingredients. Many wireless speakers do not have clocks built into them, but the iHome K2 is an all-in-one system with a large clock in the front. I know this is a trivial feature to some, but for me in my kitchen is a must have. It can also serve as the perfect clock for your nightstand with two settings for alarms.

20151229_104039

Being an all-in-one speaker means it also has to sound great. If I bought a clock for just the time I could get something far cheaper. The Kineta K2 on the other hand has front facing drivers built-in, and to my surprise they not only are loud but also sound fantastic. No the Kineta K2 isn’t your next concert hall set-up, but it doesn’t claim to be that. It does offer great quality sound at low, medium and high volumes in my kitchen and I found myself singing along to songs more often than I would like to admit. The sound is clear, balanced, warm and great to listen to FM radio, stream Bluetooth music or podcasts, and to make calls on. You do need to be relatively close to make clear calls though.

With a portable battery slot specifically designed for a single use battery, the Kineta K2 offers convience in power where it is typically a seperate feature. Portable batteries can cost anywhere from $10-50 and can easily be misplaced. The Kineta K2 has a K-Cell battery designed to lock into and charge into a specific slot designed just for it. The battery itself isn’t huge, and will only provide one charge to most phones. Typically most people don’t need more than one charge, and the K-Cell is perfect because it is highly portable and durable. It’s also great to have sitting in the speaker as a back-up just in case of a power outage. The external battery fits flush into the speaker and has an eject button that seemlessly pops the battery up from the charging slot when you need it.

Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile to carry $180 Samsung Galaxy J

0

[df-subtitle]The first in a new series of smartphones comes to Sprint’s prepaid brands[/df-subtitle]

Samsung is kicking off the new year with a new series of Android-based handsets. Arriving today at Virgin Mobile (online), the $180 Samsung Galaxy J3 looks like a more premium phone than it is.

samsunggalaxyj

Powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop, the Galaxy J3 gives prepaid customers just enough smartphone to do the daily basics. It’s not a cutting-edge phone by any stretch, but it is a good first-time experience for younger users. Moreover, it’s a decent phone for those upgrading from something a little older, too.

[alert color=”green”]

Key hardware specs:

  • 5-inch HD display
  • 5-megapixel rear camera
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 16GB storage with microSD expansion
  • 2,600mAh battery

The Samsung Galaxy J3 will be more widely available starting next week. Boost Mobile stores will carry the phone on January 18 and then it will be offered online the next day.

LG TONE Active review: Up your game to wireless

I would say that the emergence of wireless headsets have most benefited listeners who are active. Yes, even when you’re just sitting around, cutting the wire is still a nice convenience. But freeing yourself from cords on your regular workouts is just something else.

LG didn’t want to be left out of the trend. The large-scale manufacturer made sure to position itself in the mainstream audio market with the TONE. With a well acceptance, it moved on to shaping an exercise-friendly solution – the TONE Active.

DSC06116

LG was kind enough to send me a set, forcing me to get up off my lazy rear-end and try them out. Let’s see if the TONE Active keeps up with the demand.

[spacer color=”264C84″ icon=”fa-android”]

Design

If you’re unfamiliar with the TONE, it is a neck-resting unit. Many Bluetooth headphones incorporate the wireless-enabling technology into the earpieces and then bridge them by the cable.

The TONE takes a different approach. The device is essentially a circular strip of plastic, with earbuds that extend/retract from the open ends.

DSC06109

This design works well for the Active implementation, because you don’t have parts that bounce around when you’re on the move. It’s a snug and secure fit around your neck.

HBS-850_LG_TONE

The chassis of the device is a plastic affair. But it’s not like it needs to be anything more. This isn’t a luxurious set of headphones, it needs to hold up with your active lifestyle.

That being said, the build feels solid and ready for abuse. There are two different plastics that form the circle. The electronics are housed in the hard plastic arms, which taper down smoothly to a flexible, soft plastic band. The flexibility allows you open the arms to don the headset.

DSC06125

There’s a little flair of style, in the form of a colored accent. LG set me the orange unit, but there’s three other colors to choose from: Blue, Lime Green, and Pink.

Touring the device, we have the usual buttons we’d expect from a Bluetooth headset (placed outwardly from the arms). On the right arm you’ll find the Volume Up/Down buttons and on the left arm there is the Power and Phone Call button.

Power and Phone Call buttons
Power and Phone Call buttons

Therefore, this guy does pack a microphone for picking up phone calls without taking the headset off (and vibration to alert you). The micro-USB charging port is also on the left arm (protected by a flap), along with an LED light that displays status.

[row][double_paragraph]DSC06107[/double_paragraph][double_paragraph]DSC06128[/double_paragraph] [/row]

The earbuds themselves are similar to what you’d find from a wired, in-canal earphone. Another advantage of this design is that you don’t have these humongous earpieces hanging from your ears. As you pull the earbuds from their silos, you’ll hear a clicking sound (it locks as different lengths, in case you don’t need the full cable extension). Simply tug on them again to send them back.

Usability

Bluetooth headphones need a bit more attention to fit/comfort ergonomics. Basically, how do you incorporate that wireless technology so that it doesn’t get in the way? Or, what’s the point of being wireless if the headset is annoying to wear?

Fortunately, after some time with the TONE Actives I’m convinced that LG did a great job with the usability. The neck band stays right in place as I run around. And being that the earbuds are a reasonable size, they stay in place.

DSC06111

The cords extend out by a considerable length – 7 inches, which I found to be adequate (I was initially worried about the cord length being too short and the earbuds getting pulled from my ears as I exercised, but there’s actually plenty of slack). Also, the exceptional thinnest of the cables means you don’t have any weight or annoying feedback as you bounce around.

Getting started was a breeze. Simply hold down the power button and it goes into pairing mode. Then find the LG headset on your source’s Bluetooth settings and pair. When using the headphones, the button placements take a bit to get used to. I just played with them until I could remember.

An important point is that the TONE Active is IPX3-rated water and sweat resistant. You’re most likely going to be using these during your hardcore workout – which means drips of sweat are going to run along it. It’s great that the unit is robust enough to handle it. However, don’t forget about it when you hit the shower. It’s not waterproof.

Lastly, the battery is rated for a total music play time of 9.5 hours from a full charge. The was accurate in my experience, I got about 10 hours until it quit. No complaints here about the battery life, 10 hours is a good amount of playback time.

Sound

The TONE Active’s audio magic happens with what LG dubs Quad Layer speaker technology. It’s a diaphragm is made up of four layers, which is said to produce rich bass and clear treble. This is the same technology that in the more recognized LG QuadBeat 3 earphones.

LG-QuadBeat-3_1

All that is fine and dandy, but more importantly, how is the sound in experience? It’s pretty good! On my first listen I immediately noticed the balanced sound signature. The entire spectrum of sound comes through beautifully, and I don’t find myself wishing I had more from a particular range (bass, mids, highs).

But there are specifics that I can pick apart. The bass is a bit boomy. Bassheads may enjoy this kind of response (you’ll get plenty of bass here), but folks who look at a more defined reproduction may say that the bass can be tubby.

I was pleasantly surprised at the treble range. It comes through fabulously and sounds rich and detailed. Similarly, mids (which commonly get recessed) are front and center and add fullness to the music. The soundstage was also wider than I expected (satisfyingly capturing distinguishable depth of elements in the music).

With a pair of headphones that focuses on activity, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the sound quality. But LG showed me that it can be done right. No, the definition won’t grab attention from audiophiles, but the well-roundness of the audio package should be acknowledged.

[spacer color=”264C84″ icon=”fa-android”]

Final Thoughts

DSC06092

I had a great time with the TONE Active. Not generally being a fan of around-the-neck headphone solutions, I actually found the fit to be really comfortable. I also liked that the unit securely stays in place while working out. I’m convinced over this retractable earbud design, it works.

The sound quality and battery life were also satisfactory. I would have no problem recommending the Active as a great wireless option. It’s not the cheapest Bluetooth headset out there (at about $80), but you get what you pay for. You’re getting a durable and well-thought-out package here.

How To: Disable and enable T-Mobile's 'Binge On' from your phone

3

T-Mobile’s Binge On has been controversial since its announcement. If you’re not familiar with the program, T-Mobile “optimizes” video streamed over cellular data from certain video providers and doesn’t count it against your data cap. The fine print here is that it only lets you stream video in 480p. Now that people have 1080p and 1440p phones, the demand for higher resolution video is rising and people are not happy about the resolution cap. This doesn’t even take into consideration the Net Neutrality arguments.

Binge on is turned on by default. You can go into the settings of your account (if you’re an authorized user) and turn it off for your line, or you can turn it off with these quick shortcodes. Thanks to Reddit user 50atomic for bringing this to our attention.

First things first, fire up your dialer. You’ll be entering the specific codes below and you will receive a prompt with information after you hit dial.

To check your Binge On status: Dial #264# (#BNG#) and hit dial. A prompt will appear telling you either “Your BINGE ON is Enabled, to Disable dial #263#.” or “Your BINGE ON is Disabled, Dial #266# to Enable it.

To turn Binge On OFF: Dial #263# (#BNF#) and hit dial. A prompt will appear telling you that “Your BINGE ON is Disabled, to Enable dial #266#.”

To turn Binge On ON: Dial #266# (#BNO#) and hit dial. A prompt will appear telling you that “Your BINGE ON is Enabled, to Disable dial #263#.”

Binge On Short Codes

There’s one big caveat here. If you’re one of the lucky T-Mobile customers currently enjoying T-Mobile’s gift of three months of free unlimited data that lasts until March, this will kill that gift. If you’re an unlimited user, this won’t affect your data at all.

If you’d like to check out some more short codes, you can check out T-Mobile’s self-service codes page.

Accidentally swipe away a notification? Here's how you can get it back!

5

One of the best things about Android is the notification system. It’s elegant in its simplicity. It stays out of your way until you want to deal with the notification, and it’s easy to dismiss the unimportant ones and move on with your task. But, what happens when you accidentally get rid of that notification without reading it? Is it gone forever? Today we’re going to help you get it back in a few simple steps.

This feature was first introduced in Jelly Bean so if your phone is running software newer than that, you should be able to follow along. We have seen some OEM Skins (namely LG’s UX 4.0) strip out this functionality.

  1. The first step is heading to a home screen with enough space for a 1×1 widget. This is the same size as a regular app icon so this can fit on any screen that isn’t completely taken up by widgets and icons.
  2. Next, press and hold on an empty space to bring up the options. Here you can change your wallpaper, create a widget or enter settings. Select the “Widgets” option in the center.
  3. Event Log 2 editedScroll all the way down until you reach a widget called “Settings”. Press and hold that your home screen comes back up and you can release it where you want it to be placed. The placement of this widget doesn’t matter in regards to functionality, you can put it wherever you want.
  4. Event Log 3 edited After you lift your finger, you’ll be greeted with a long list of settings you can create a widget for. In this case we’re looking for the “Notification Log” option. Press that once.
  5. Event Log 4 editedYou’ll be returned to your screen with a new 1×1 widget that looks exactly like the Settings icon with the name “Notification Log”. That name is pretty long for an app in Android so it will mostly likely get cut off. This is normal.
  6. Event Log 5 editedTap the icon and you’ll be taken into the Notification Log for your phone. You can scroll through everything that has happened on your phone that leaves a notification from calls, to emails to text messages and push alerts. When you press one of the log entries you’ll be taken to the application settings for that alert. Here you’ll have the ability to uninstall, force stop, revoke permissions and set defaults for the app.

Event Log 7 edited

That’s it! Pretty easy right? It would be great if this functionality was a quick tap away but these steps are pretty easy. In my case, I’ll only be adding this widget when I need it since the steps are so fast and simple.

10 Android phones you should consider for AT&T this month (January 2016)

0

Time for a new smartphone? That’s great!  What do you have in mind? Not sure? That’s okay, we’ll help.

If you’re a seasoned smartphone owner, picking out an upgrade is a simple process. But, for some folks, the idea of purchasing a new handset makes them nervous.

Which is the newest phone? What is the best phone? Which is the one that’s going to give me exactly what I need? There’s a lot to consider, sure. We’re here to help you dig through the clutter.

We’ve put together a list of the top 10 Android smartphones you should look at for AT&T this January. Here, in no particular order, are ten Android handsets that you should consider for AT&T if you’re currently contemplating a new device.

LG G Flex 2

228076-overview-lg-g-flex2-designIntroduced roughly one year ago, this phone was among the first to boast a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor. Even today, it’s powerful enough to contend with most Androids and features a 13-megapixel rear camera with laser focus and optical image stabilization. What it also offers, is a self-healing protective coating, which means your keys and general wear won’t ruin the finish. Also, the phone is curved in multiple ways and allows for one of the most comfortable experiences around.

LG V10

This is one of the newest phones on the list, and it’s how LG wrapped up the year. The killer feature? Two displays. Indeed, there is the 5.7-inch quad HD screen which looks gorgeous on its own. However, up at the top you will find a small secondary display which offers quick access to favorite contacts, apps, media player buttons , or an at-a-glance view of your schedule.

LG-V10-04But, as if that were not enough, you will also find 64 gigabytes of internal storage with a microSD card that allows for another 200GB of space. The removable 3,000mAh battery is more than enough to get you a day or two of life. The rear offers up a 16-megapixel camera while the front houses a pair of 5-megapixel shooters. One works for close-ups while the other has a wide angle lens for group shots.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

The fifth generation of Samsung’s plus-sized smartphone experience boasts a gorgeous metal and glass design. The S Pen digital stylus is smarter than ever and works without even powering on the display. Up from previous models, storage options are now 32GB and 64GB. The battery, which comes in at a commendable 3000mAh capacity, allows for fast charging, wireless charging, and even fast wireless charging. Approaching six months since its debut, we are fond of the large screen and stylus

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

An almost identical sibling to the aforementioned Galaxy Note 5, this one drops stylus and picks up a dual curved-edge display. If you don’t need to jot down notes or mark up documents, consider grabbing the more sexy counterpart. It’s a looker and feels terrific in hand.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ at AT&T

BlackBerry Priv

250811-bb-priv-img-3The newest of the bunch, this is also the first BlackBerry handset to run Android out of the box. Not only is this one big and powerful, but it’s also extra secure, too. Standout features include an 19-megapixel rear camera and 3410mAh battery. Oh, and did we mention the Priv also has a physical keyboard? Indeed, tucked under the gorgeous 5.4-inch curved display is a 4-row QWERTY keyboard. Blast through emails and messages without breaking a sweat. It’s 2015 and once again it’s cool to own a BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Priv at AT&T

Samsung Galaxy S6

Announced almost one year ago, it’s still tough to beat Samsung at the flagship smartphone game. The 5.1-inch Quad HD screen is a stunner and feels oh-so-right in our hands. We’re also quite fond of the premium design which includes glass and metal. It’s the first Galaxy S model we can recall where we’ve wanted to coddle and protect it. It doesn’t hurt that it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop (with an expected 6.0 update), comes with at least 32GB storage, and has 3GB RAM to boost performance.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active

Take the 2015 flagship smartphone and then toss in water and dust resistance with shock absorption and you end up with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. It still packs the 5.1-inch display, 16-megapixel camera,  and octa-core processor; however, the device greatly benefits with the addition of a 3500mAh battery. In short, this is a tremendous phone that’s built to last all day and can take just about anything you will throw its way. Spend a bunch of time outside? Pick this one up.

LG G4

We might be looking forward to the next-generation LG flagship but that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate the 2015 model. We’re still in love with the design and kick-ass camera. No really, this version has one of the best camera experiences we’ve ever seen on a smartphone. The specs are top-notch and the screen is a simply beautiful; it’s on the short list of best of 2015.

LG G4 at AT&T

HTC One A9

one_a9As the only HTC model on this list, we’re big fans of the new design cues and direction. It’s not necessarily a powerful smartphone, but it’s more than enough for first time buyers — with plenty left over. It’s the first non-Nexus handset to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow and enjoys features such as Doze, Android Pay, and Android on Tap. For the first time in a few years we are excited about HTC again and can’t recommend this phone enough for its target demographic. The 5-inch screen feels terrific in hand and the fingerprint scanner is highly responsive. Check out our review of the HTC One A9.

Motorola Moto X (2nd Generation)

The Moto X (2nd Generation) doesn’t have a ton of AT&T customization which means it’s closer to a stock Android experience than most other phones.  What is added by Motorola, however, is worth it and only adds to the phone’s value. It’s a little over a year old now, sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your attention. If you’re looking for a great Android handset that won’t break the bank, you’ll be wise to consider this one.

Droid Turbo 2

Selling point number one: It’s the first smartphone to offer a shatterproof display.  Indeed, this one’s not just a one-gimmick device, either. Not only does this phone give you peace of mind in knowing that it can fall out of your pocket or desk without shattering, it also features some impressive hardware.

Running Android 5.1 Lollipop, the Turbo 2 packs a 5.4-inch display at 2560×1440 resolution and a 21-megapixel camera. Quick charging ensures that the phone never runs low on juice; moreover, the 3760mAh battery gets you two days of use. In a first for Verizon’s famous Droid brand of phones, buyers can head to the Moto Maker tool to design their own unique version of the Turbo 2.

It might be approaching its one year anniversary but that doesn’t mean the Samsung flagship smartphone should be left off your list. The 5.1-inch Quad HD screen is a stunner and the overall size feels great in our hands. Oh, and there’s the premium design materials which includes glass and metal. It’s the first Galaxy S model we’ve wanted to coddle and protect in a long time. It doesn’t hurt that it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop (with an expected 6.0 update), comes with at least 32GB storage, and has 3GB RAM to boost performance.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

An almost identical sibling to the Galaxy Note 5, this one drops the stylus but picks up a slick, dual curved edge display. If you don’t need to jot down notes or mark up documents, consider grabbing the more sexy counterpart. It’s a real looker.

LG G4

LG’s early 2015 flagship still impresses us and holds its own against other brands. We’ve long since gotten used to that rear camera configuration; the G4 has one of the best camera experiences we’ve ever seen on a smartphone. The specs are top-notch and the screen begs for your attention.

Google Nexus 6

Running an untouched version of Android Lollipop, the Nexus 6 was among the first to receive an update to the 6.0 Marshmallow build. If you’re a fan of a clean, unmodified operating systems, this is an easy choice. The 6-inch screen might be a little bigger than you’re familiar with but the reviews and feedback have been solid. Internal storage is 32GB and there’s no microSD expansion card slot but it shouldn’t be a problem if you like to store data in the cloud.

HTC One M9

htc_one_m9_6The only HTC model you’ll find here, it’s also one of the oldest flagship models to make this list. Don’t let that concern you, though, it’s still a kick-ass phone with a great build. And the price is even better than ever. The 5-inch screen looks great and fits well in the hand while the 20-megapixel camera snaps excellent photos. The microSD card keeps media lovers content with room for up to 200GB of external storage.

Motorola Moto X (2nd Generation)

As predecessor to the newer Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2, the Moto X (2nd Generation) doesn’t have a ton of Verizon customization. This means it’s closer to a stock Android experience than most other phones with only a few added touches. We love what Motorola adds to the user interface: twist to open camera, chop to activate flashlight, and voice actions. Pick yours up in Black, White Bamboo, or Football Leather.
