Sony announced two new rugged Android smartphones due in Q3 2012: the Xperia go (known as the Xperia advance in the US) and the Xperia acro S. Both proved that dust and water resistance doesn’t require a chunky, utilitarian design.
The Xperia go ran Android 2.3 Gingerbread (ICS update planned) with a dual-core 1GHz processor, a 3.5-inch Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, scratch-resistant mineral glass with wet finger tracking, a 5-megapixel camera, IP67 dust and water resistance (submersible to 1 meter), and preloaded Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited. Available in black, white, and yellow.
The Xperia acro S launched on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 4.3-inch 720p HD Reality Display, a 12-megapixel camera with fast capture, 1080p rear video and 720p front camera video, IP55 and IP57 dust and water resistance ratings, PlayStation certification, and the same scratch-resistant wet-finger display. Available in black, white, and pink.
Pricing and carrier details for both were to be announced closer to launch.
