Online Scams Are Smarter Than Ever—Google’s Enhanced Protection Fights Back

Google Safe Browsing has been a critical defense against phishing, malware, and online scams since its launch in 2005. Now, with over 5 billion devices relying on its security, Google is marking Safer Internet Day by highlighting the growing adoption of Enhanced Protection mode—a powerful safeguard that now protects more than 1 billion Chrome users.

Smarter AI, Stronger Security

Enhanced Protection, introduced in 2020, ramps up security beyond Chrome’s Standard Protection mode, making users twice as safe from phishing and scams. The secret? Advanced AI and machine learning models that analyze vast amounts of real-world threats, helping Chrome detect and block deceptive sites before they can cause harm.

These models can identify fake websites designed to mimic trusted domains—whether it’s a fraudulent login page or a cleverly disguised phishing email link. By continuously analyzing suspicious patterns, Enhanced Protection can flag high-risk sites that might otherwise slip through traditional defenses.

Fighting Malware with Deep Scans

Beyond safer browsing, Enhanced Protection takes a proactive approach to blocking dangerous downloads. Each month, Google Safe Browsing runs over 300,000 deep scans on suspicious files, using advanced scanners to detect never-before-seen malware—even threats hidden in encrypted archives. This extra layer of scrutiny helps prevent users from unknowingly downloading harmful software.

Privacy-Focused Security

Despite its deep threat analysis, Google emphasizes that Enhanced Protection prioritizes user privacy. URLs, page content, and file scans are anonymized and used only for security purposes. Google retains this data only as long as necessary to improve protection without compromising user confidentiality.

Safer Browsing for Everyone

Turning on Enhanced Protection doesn’t just shield individual users—it strengthens security for the entire web. When Chrome detects a new phishing site or malicious download, that information helps protect future users from falling into the same trap.

For those looking to boost their online safety, Enhanced Protection mode can be enabled in Chrome settings and on Google Accounts—providing an extra layer of security in an era of increasingly sophisticated online threats.
