Homey is giving smart homes a new layer of intelligence with the launch of Dynamic Electricity Prices in Homey Energy. The update allows users to automate appliances around real-time energy rates, potentially saving money by shifting usage to off-peak hours and avoiding cost spikes. From electric heaters to washing machines and EV chargers, devices can now be set to run at the most budget-friendly times.
“Smart home automation should react not just to time or presence, but to actual energy market conditions,” said Stefan Witkamp, CEO at Athom, the company behind Homey. “This new feature gives users the tools to align their energy consumption with live pricing, saving money and using energy more intelligently.”
Real-Time Pricing and Smarter Control
The system integrates pricing data from European power exchanges, letting users view the live cost per kilowatt-hour inside Homey Energy. For those who like to fine-tune, options include adding surcharges, VAT, or even defining custom cost formulas. Automations can then be triggered by these live prices, making it easy to schedule a washing machine during cheaper hours or pause electric heating when rates spike.
New Flow cards, Homey’s intuitive automation blocks, make setup straightforward. And for quick visibility, real-time rates appear in iOS and Android widgets, as well as on Homey Dashboards.
Availability and Supported Markets
Dynamic Electricity Prices is now available on Homey Pro (Early 2023), Homey Pro mini, and Homey Cloud. The feature comes included with Homey Pro on firmware v12.6.0 or later and app version 9.5.0 or later, while Homey Cloud users will need a Premium subscription.
Currently, the feature supports countries with dynamic energy pricing contracts, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Homey notes that while it enables automation, customers will need to obtain a compatible energy contract through their local supplier.
