Google Rolls Out Gemini-Powered Upgrades for Nest and Google Home Devices

Google is rolling out a series of updates powered by its Gemini AI, promising new levels of functionality for Google Home and Nest devices. With a range of upgrades designed to simplify daily routines, automate home management, and enhance user interaction with smart home devices, this announcement has some features worth noting for Google Home users.

AI Camera Search Adds New Recognition Capabilities

Starting this week, Google Nest cameras gain an AI boost to understand not just movement but activity context. Cameras will now be able to recognize scenarios like your dog relaxing or having a little too much fun in the garden. This feature aims to help users search for specific events within recorded clips by typing queries like, ā€œDid the kids play outside today?ā€ or ā€œDid a delivery truck arrive?ā€ Select users with Nest Aware Plus can test these features via the Google Home app as part of Public Preview. At present, these upgrades are available to U.S. users in English.

Automate Home Automation: “Help Me Create”

An innovative feature called ā€œHelp me createā€ will make home automation easier to set up using everyday language. Google Home will enable users to describe desired automation setups, like ā€œRemind me to lock up at nightā€ or ā€œHelp me get better sleep.ā€ The system will then suggest configurations based on user needs and device usage. This feature is scheduled to be tested in Public Preview later this year for a small group of U.S.-based Nest Aware Plus subscribers.

Several new integrations enhance compatibility across Google devices. Users will find these updates across Android, Wear OS, and Google TV:

Streamlined Google Home App and New Widgets

The Google Home app is getting a new Favorites widget for Android and iOS, allowing quicker access to key devices from the home screen. An upgraded media control interface also brings refreshed artwork and faster navigation. A Member Access feature will soon allow homeowners to share limited access with friends or family, ensuring they get the right level of control within the home’s smart ecosystem.
