Google officially rebranded the Android Market as Google Play, the all-in-one destination for apps, books, movies, and music. The change rolled out as a phased OTA update to devices running Android 2.2 or higher, replacing the Android Market app with the Play Store, and upgrading Music, Videos, and Books apps to Play Music, Play Movies, and Play Books. Visiting market.android.com already redirected to the new site at launch.
For existing Android users the experience remained functionally unchanged. The rebrand moved away from a platform-centric name toward something that worked across Google’s expanding ecosystem, including a hardware device widely expected to arrive later that year. “Get it on Google Play” also made more natural marketing copy than the platform-specific predecessor.
