DWARFLAB Mini Aims to Make July’s Skywatching Lineup Easier to Capture

July is shaping up to be a busy month for stargazers, with a packed calendar of planetary pairings, lunar meetups, and meteor showers giving casual observers plenty of reasons to look up. DWARFLAB is positioning its compact DWARFLAB Mini smart telescope as a simple way to capture those moments without needing a full astrophotography rig or a backyard that looks like mission control.

The DWARFLAB Mini is a portable smart telescope designed for people who want to observe and photograph the night sky with less setup and less technical guesswork. It weighs 840g, takes around three minutes to get going, and uses automated object finding and tracking to help users locate celestial targets through app-based controls.

For July, that means the DWARFLAB Mini could be useful for capturing a range of lunar and planetary events, from close planetary encounters to wider sky scenes involving the Moon, bright stars, and familiar clusters.

July Brings a Packed Calendar of Celestial Events

Calendar of astronomical events for July, featuring celestial alignments and moon phases.

The month opens with several notable planetary pairings. On July 4, Mars appeared close to Uranus, followed by Mars passing between the Pleiades star cluster and the Hyades on July 5. Those early-month events provided wide-field photo opportunities shortly after sunset.

The Moon reached Last Quarter on July 7, following an appearance close to Neptune the previous evening. On July 10, one of the month’s more approachable skywatching moments arrives when the crescent Moon appears near the Pleiades. The pairing should be visible through binoculars or compact telescopes, giving newer observers an easier target than some of the fainter deep-sky fare.

More lunar pairings follow through the middle of the month. The Moon appears near Uranus and Mars on July 11, Mars moves close to Aldebaran on July 13, and the New Moon on July 14 arrives near Pollux and Mercury, bringing darker skies that can be useful for imaging. The Moon then appears near Jupiter on July 15, near Regulus and Venus on July 17, and near Spica around First Quarter on July 21.

Late July brings another pair of skywatching highlights. On July 29, the Full Moon rises close to Pluto, followed by the Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids meteor showers peaking on July 31. Under favorable dark-sky conditions, the showers are expected to produce dozens of meteors per hour, creating long-exposure opportunities for anyone patient enough to let the camera do its quiet little space-fishing routine.

A Compact Smart Telescope for Lunar and Deep-sky Imaging

The DWARFLAB Mini includes a 1/2.8-inch Sony IMX662 sensor with 1080p resolution and 2.9 µm pixels, paired with a 150mm f/5 telephoto lens and 30mm aperture. Built-in astro, dark frame, and narrow band filters are included, along with an external solar filter.

DWARFLAB says the Mini’s automated tracking and wide-angle lens are suited for planetary conjunctions, lunar events, and meteor shower radiants. Its equatorial tracking mode compensates for Earth’s rotation during longer exposures, with exposure times of up to 90 seconds supported. Dedicated lunar and planetary shooting modes can identify and lock onto bright targets, with multi-frame image stacking used to improve detail and clarity.

The DWARFLAB Mini is available through Amazon US, Amazon UK, Amazon.de, and the DWARFLAB website. Pricing is listed at $399 in the US, £359 in the UK, and €409.00 through Amazon.de.
