Big Sound: Shanling Launches 4th-Gen M0 Pura Ultra-Compact DAP

Audio pioneer Shanling has officially pulled the curtain back on the M0 Pura, marking the fourth generation of its ultra-compact portable digital audio player (DAP) lineup. Weighing in at a mere 35.8g, this pint-sized device aims to pack a heavyweight punch, squeezing high-resolution audio hardware into a chassis barely larger than a smart watch.

Targeted at commuters, travelers, and minimalist audiophiles, the M0 Pura bridges the gap between extreme portability and uncompromised sound quality.

Dual-DAC Architecture Under the Hood

Despite its miniature footprint ($43.8 \times 45 \times 13.8\text{ mm}$), Shanling has refused to cut corners on the internal circuitry. The M0 Pura is driven by a dual Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC configuration. This setup allows the device to native-decode high-fidelity files up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM and native DSD128.

For those looking to drive more demanding headphones, the player punches well above its weight class. When paired with Shanling’s proprietary 3.5mm-to-4.4mm balanced adapter, the unit can pump out an impressive 250mW of output power at 32 ohms.

Tailored OS Meets High-Efficiency Hardware

Operating the device is handled via a vivid 1.54-inch color touchscreen ($240 \times 240$ resolution). Rather than clogging the system with a heavy, battery-draining Android build, Shanling has deployed its proprietary MTouch operating system.

Running on the efficient Ingenic X1000 processing platform, the tailored OS is built purely for music navigation, ensuring lag-free browsing through expansive libraries. The efficiency of this hardware-software synergy allows the modest 650mAh battery to squeeze out up to 9 hours of continuous playback and up to a month of standby time.

The Swiss Army Knife of Micro-DAPs

Where the M0 Pura truly differentiates itself is its versatility. It features a advanced two-way Bluetooth 5.0 system, meaning it can act as a wireless source for your Bluetooth headphones (supporting premium codecs like LDAC and aptX), or flip roles to become a ultra-compact Bluetooth receiver/headphone amp for your smartphone, laptop, or gaming console.

Furthermore, its physical USB-C port enables a dual identity:

  • USB DAC Mode: Connect it to a computer to bypass poor internal sound cards.
  • Digital Transport: Use it as a bit-perfect digital source feeding into a larger external desktop DAC.

Massive Storage and Format Versatility

With no internal storage, the device relies on a side-loading microSD card slot that supports capacities up to 2TB—enough room to hold thousands of uncompressed albums.

The M0 Pura boasts near-universal format compatibility, effortlessly digesting everything from standard MP3s and legacy iTunes AAC files to audiophile-grade FLAC, WAV, ALAC, and DSD rips. Beyond music, Shanling has included practical features for spoken-word enthusiasts, such as adjustable playback speeds, A-B repeat functions, and smartphone remote-control integration via the Eddict Player app.
