Arlo announced the Essential Solar Security Camera, a $99.99 outdoor home security camera that combines an integrated solar panel, a large rechargeable battery, and 2K video. Preorders are open now, with shipping scheduled for mid-October.
The camera is aimed at homeowners who want coverage around their property with fewer trips up a ladder to recharge a battery. Arlo says as little as two hours of sunlight per day can keep it powered. When fully charged, its battery can last up to six months without sunlight, according to the company.
Those figures come with a practical caveat: battery life varies with settings, usage, the amount of activity captured, and environmental conditions. The promise is less charging maintenance, but placement and activity levels will still matter.
Solar Power With a Battery Backup
The Essential Solar Security Camera pairs a built-in 1.2W solar panel with a 14,790mAh battery. Arlo positions that combination as a way to maintain coverage through darker winter months and reduce the need for frequent manual charging.
Its slim design includes three mounting holes for DIY installation. Finding a suitable spot means balancing sunlight, Wi-Fi reception, and a useful view of the area being monitored. A sunny patch of siding is only helpful if the camera can see something worth watching.
Dual-band Wi-Fi automatically switches to the strongest available connection, according to Arlo. The camera carries an IP65 weather-resistance rating, and the company says it is designed to withstand heat, cold, rain, and snow.
2K Video, Night Vision, and Two-Way Audio
Video recording tops out at 2K resolution and 24 frames per second, with a 130-degree field of view. An integrated white LED spotlight supports color night vision for coverage after dark.
Two-way audio lets users speak with visitors or delivery drivers through the Arlo Secure app. A built-in siren can be activated remotely through the app to help deter unwanted activity.
Smart home support includes Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and IFTTT. That gives households using those platforms several options for connecting the camera to their existing setup.
AI Features Require an Arlo Secure Plan
The camera supports Arlo’s Secure Early Warning System when paired with a subscription plan. Arlo lists Threat Assessment, Event Captions, and Arlo Summary among the features intended to give users more context about detected activity.
The company says these tools help distinguish routine events from situations that may need attention. Their usefulness will depend on how accurately they interpret what the camera captures; the announcement provides no independent performance results.
Arlo offers three Early Warning System plans: Smart Aware, Smart Secure, and Ultra Secure. The release does not specify subscription prices or explain which listed features are included in each tier, so buyers will need to check the plan details when weighing the ongoing cost.
